05/04/2002 The Tea Party, The Turnstones (Velour) (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)

Sara came up at about 2, and we headed over at about 3. Rick and Joe got enlisted as temp roadies, hauling in and setting up stuff for the band. Karl, Kelley and Dave showed up about 5:30-6:00, and we got in at 7. All of us set up shop right in front of Jeff’s mic stand, all 9 of us stretched out across the barrier! So Velo… The Turnstones come out, and Karl wastes no time in yelling “VELOUR!!!!” at the top of his lungs, and I did it right after him… The lead singer steps up to the mic and just goes “yeah…”, and that was it! We got a good look at their logo, and lets just say they’re gonna get sued by both Harley-Davidson and the NHL! So yeah, 45 minutes of pointedly ignoring the freaky guitar player later, he whipped a pick at sara and ran off. Hah! Then it was Tea time again! Almost the exact same setlist as Shea’s, only instead of The Badger, Jeff sang Gone by himself, and they didn’t play Soulbreaking. However, instead of Kashmir in the middle of Save Me, we got Jeff Buckley’s Last Goodbye! It’s interesting going to two shows back to back, because you can compare them. I thought Psychopomp and Temptation were better on this night, but Sister Awake and (so Mary thinks) The Messenger were better at Shea’s. Regardless, the show was great again. Joe got a setlist from the drum tech, and his friend Aaron’s other friends were giving him a hassle about it, and we almost ended up brawling outside. That ran its course and we hung around a bit longer talking to some others outside. The night had a little of everything!
