05/13/2016 Texas Hippie Coalition, Sons Of Texas, Dear Mr. Dead (Rochester, NY @ Montage Music Hall)

TEXAS! Obviously the theme of the night. I was stoked to see Sons of Texas, as I’d been spinning Baptized in the Rio Grande since it came out. And they rocked. Lots of intensity, they played all the heavy stuff (none of the ballads), and kept the crowd into it the whole time. Not a whole lot to say other than it was just as good as I’d expected.

SOTX:
Never Bury The Hatchet
King Nothing
Pull It And Fire
The Vestryman
Blameshift
Baptized In The Rio Grande
Texas Trim

I’d never really listened to Texas Hippie Coalition, and the only reason I’d even heard of them is because Ryan Bennett, the drummer for Eye Empire, had also drummed for them. They’ve been around since 2004, however, so they’re no rookies. In checking them out ahead of the show, I got into them a little bit, particularly one song (that they didn’t play) called “Rock Ain’t Dead (It’s Just In Rehab)”. They’re a southern hard rock / metal band, and the singer, “Big Dad” Ritch, is exactly that. Not a small individual by any means. But rock they did! Lots of fun with these guys too. With a closer titled “Pissed Off and Mad About It”, you know you’re in for a good time.

THC:
Come Get It
El Diablo Rojo
Outlaw
Rollin’
Angel Fall
Knee Deep
Don’t Come Lookin’
Turn It Up
Saddle Sore
Hit It Again
Whiskey Burn
Pissed Off and Mad About It
