Yay pop-rock at it’s finest! American Idol or no, Chris Daughtry has proven that he can do mainstream rock with the best of them, and with two albums and a bajilion copies sold, he’s doing something right. The tour for Leave This Town had been going on for quite awhile with all three of these bands, so everyone was in game shape, including the crew, as the timing of set changes was down to the second! Cavo kicked things off, and while they have a catchy song or two, the rest of their set was just generic “rock”, and for some reason they remind me of Revis. “Blame”, the opener, was probably the best song they did, and the closer “Champagne” got the biggest reaction, as that’s the big single. Their half-hour came and went, and while I wasn’t jumping out of my seat, they didn’t put me to sleep either. Cavo setlist: Blame, My Little Secret, Crash, We All Fall Down, Let It Go, Champagne.
Lifehouse was up next, and they actually surprised me with how “hard” their set was. More rock-y and fewer slower songs, which I’m thinking was due to A) touring with Daughtry and having to keep the energy up, and B) focusing on their latest album, which is much faster and heavier than anything they’ve done prior. Six of the nine songs were from “Smoke & Mirrors”, including “Had Enough” which Daughtry joined them for (he performs on the album version as well). Tiff was initially excited to see Lifehouse, however, her lack of enthusiasm for the new album, coupled with the fact that the majority of the set was said album, kind of tempered the excitement a bit. I could take or leave them, but it was interesting to see how they’d evolved over the ten years since I’d first seen them. A bit more stage prescence to be sure, as during one of the songs, lead singer Jason Wade took off through the crowd on the floor (which was seats) and up one of the right side aisles up into the seating bowl. The ladies in close proximity swooned over that move! Lifehouse Setlist: All In, Halfway Gone, Nerve Damage, Smoke & Mirrors, Whatever It Takes, Wrecking Ball, Had Enough (w/ Daughtry), First Time, Hanging By A Moment.
Time for Daughtry! He and the band started things off on an energetic note with “Every Time You Turn Around” into “What I Want”. The pacing of the set was great, with just enough chatter in-between songs without taking forever, mixing up the faster and slower tunes, and of course, the crowd sing-a-longs on the hugely popular songs. The rest of the band sounded excellent, Daughtry’s voice was spot-on for most of the night, save a couple of times where he took stuff down the octave. (Nothing like Brent Smith from Shinedown though, this was far and few between, and not very noticeable). Towards the latter third of the set, Daughtry came out with an acoustic, and launched into Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight”, which the band eventually joined in on. Very cool take on the song. They closed the main set with what’s probably my favorite song (and arguably also his hardest), and also my highlight of the night, “You Don’t Belong”. The encore began with “Home”, which Jason Wade from Lifehouse came out for, and the night ended with “There and Back Again”. A satisfingly-long 16 song set, good song selection, a great band, and a singer that lived up to all of the American Idol hype. Despite what anyone may think of the music, the man can sing and put on a rock show.

It’s funny, because going to the number of shows I go to (and maybe the type), I think my perspective of show crowds is kinda warped. The place was nearly full, people were enthusiastic, but I had figured Daughtry (and Lifehouse for that matter) would have a ton of die-hards that were going to fliptheir lid from beginning to end. Other than the giant singles (and at the “designated times”) there wasn’t a whole hell of a lot of singing along. On the seated floor, and in the seats both, there wasn’t a lot of movement. Certainly some, but I expected more. During Lifehouse’s set, they actually had a security guard or two come through our seated area (center ice, stage left) and tell people to sit down! What? It’s a rock concert folks, the seats are there for decoration! Thankfully, that didn’t happen duing Daughtry’s set. While I realize this is one of those shows that are people’s “only concert we go to this year”, and since he was on American Idol, it’s a wide (pun completely intended!) demographic, I thought the crowd would be better, ala the atmosphere at HSBC for Pearl Jam. That show was all seats and people went bonkers all night. Regardless, the show itself was fantastic, and Daughtry brings it. you know, i’d have had the exact opposite expectation for a crowd at this show. i’d have thought, this dude is from american idol, and lifehouse is just top 40 rock, all the people here probably only know the 2 or 3 songs on the radio. because i just assume bands like this don’t have rabid insane fans like say…nin does haha

Which is why the large demographic comes into play, but I pegged the American Idol/Daughtry fans as super-rabid, buy everything/know all the songs/cry at the sight of them type fans. Obviously there weren’t many of those 🙂

yeah and i peg them as fair weather, i like you now cuz i hear your song on the radio, kinds of fans haha. might have alot of fans, but those fans buy the cd and listen to the 2 songs they know, and ff the rest haha
