I was pretty excited to see that Black Stone Cherry was on the schedule for Jam at the Ridge this year, as usually they book straight-up country acts. I’ve more or less driven past the place on the way to or from work for the last 8 years, but had never seen a show there. They bill it as a family-friendly environment, and due to the noise curfew the shows are usually over by 9:30-10:00 or so. With all of that in mind, I went all-in and got the VIP meet and greet package. I’d met the BSC guys before (read: 10 years ago), but I always like to support the band and the venue with these types of things as well. So as a non-camper I had to park on North Rd, and we got a ride on the “redneck limo” (a farm tractor with a trailer ala a halloween pumpkin patch!) to get down Conlon Rd. to the venue. It’s a cool place, at the bottom of an old ski run. Almost like having a stage set up in your backyard! I wandered around a bit, got something to eat, and then we did the meet and greet in the backstage area. The BSC guys were gracious as always and super nice. I did ask if there was going to be a Floyd Collins sighting, to which they chuckled (but ultimately didn’t play).

The openers were pretty decent as well. BC Psychotics are a local band that mix some originals in with their covers, and probably do well as a party / bar band (apparently they’re playing 34 Rush at Batavia Downs as well). The direct support was a southern/country rock band (from Philadelphia!) called Stolen Rhodes. Not nearly as heavy/rock as BSC, more in the Lynyrd Skynyrd type realm, so not exactly my wheelhouse, but I enjoyed them. Very talented guys.

At this point I thought the place would have filled in more, it was a beautiful Saturday night, but if there was 200 people there that’d be a lot. Even with the people actually camping there, I figured it’d be busier. No accounting for good taste I guess. I can say that everyone that was there was all-in for BSC though!

With that in mind, on to the main attraction! I’d never seen Black Stone Cherry headline, so I was doubly excited for this. They came out of the gate with Burnin’ followed by Me and Mary Jane, so we were starting with a bang. Judging from the other setlists they’d been playing in Europe lately, we got some stuff that hadn’t been played recently, including Maybe Someday, Bad Habit and Born Under A Bad Sign (which I *love* their take on!). They’ve been inserting all kinds of stuff into Cheaper to Drink Alone, and we got, of all things, No Diggity! I was standing next to a group of people that would have been more at home at Montage or the Bug Jar (like me, shout out to JT, Taylor, and Jeanie!) than here and while we all thought No Diggity was both awesome and hilarious, I’d wager a good half the crowd had no idea what song it was. Too funny. The balance of the show was old favorites (Boom Boom, Millionaire, Lonely Train) and they closed with Family Tree. BSC were just as good as they’ve been every other time, the small-ish crowd didn’t seem to faze them in the least as far as their intensity, and all of us that were there had a great time. We had ourselves a Southern-Fried *Saturday* Night!
