08/24/2013 Chimaira, The Browning, Threat Signal, Dark Sermon (Rochester, NY @ Montage Music Hall)

[Vanity Strikes, Beneath Hells Sky and Into the Harbor on the bill, didn’t see them.]

Didn’t really see much of Dark Sermon, however Threat Signal was a pretty worthy opener. I didn’t realize they were from Hamilton either. Essentially metalcore, they held their own for their half-hour or so set. The direct support was The Browning, and to say I was less than impressed would be putting it mildly. Hipster looking kids that play “electronicore”, in other words, what passes for metal, throw in some generic dubstep, crappy screaming, and strobe lights, and you have a loooooong 45 minutes. Leave the kitschy stuff to Andrew WK, okay?

So finally it was time for Chimaira, and now that they’ve completely turned over the lineup, lead singer Mark Hunter is the lone original member left. It doesn’t really matter, as the band sounded fantastic; just as good on the new Crown of Phantoms tracks as on all the old stuff. A good mix for the setlist as well, 3 of the new tracks with a mix of the old. A fun night of metal with one of my old favorites!
