When I saw this was announced, I knew I had to see them again. It had been since August of 2007 that I’d seen GWAR, so despite still not knowing any songs beyond Saddam A Go Go, I knew I’d have a blast.
I got in during Butcher Babies set, and as a metal band with not one but two female singers, it was certainly something different. They seem to be a polarizing band, probably because at least one of the singers has posed for Playboy, and they make no secret of flaunting their sexuality right beside their metal screams. The band sounded fine, the songs were okay, not spectacular, but they certainly can command a crowd. It was a spectacle for sure, and for not really knowing the band, that’s all you can ask for!
Butcher Babies setlist (guesstimate from other shows):
The Mirror Never Lies
Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers (ZZ Top cover)
Jesus Needs More Babies for His War Machine
Blonde Girls All Look the Same
The place was packed by the time GWAR took to the stage, and despite not wearing a white t-shirt, I got my share of visible fake blood, guts, and whatever else all over me anyway. The show was amusing as hell, they did a nice tribute to Oderus (RIP Dave Brockie), and there was more of the usual visual mayhem that happens at a GWAR show. I still have no idea how they fit everyone up on Water Street’s rather small stage, but they did!
GWAR setlist (guesstimate from other shows):
Crush, Kill, Destroy
Madness at the Core of Time
Black and Huge
Saddam a Go-Go
Vlad the Impaler
Jack The World
I’m in Love (With a Dead Dog)
Let Us Slay
You Can’t Kill Terror
A Gathering of Ghouls / Storm Is Coming / Hail, Genocide!
A Short History of the End of the World
Metal Metal Land
Sick of You
