11/23/2009 All That Remains, The Devil Wears Prada, Story of the Year (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)

By Eric | November 27, 2009 12:03 am

[Haste The Day was first on the bill, but I didn’t get there in time to see them.]

The kick-off show of the Napalm and Noise Tour found itself in Rochester. This is a co-headlining run between All That Remains and The Devil Wears Prada, where the bands take turns closing the show on alternating nights, with the same set times. I got to the venue just as Story of the Year was getting ready to start. Having not known much of anything about this band (other than hearing “Until The Day I Die” once or twice), they were pretty entertaing in a live setting. The “new” song they played (pretty sure it was “To The Burial”) was quite good also.

If the set from the next night, and then a couple nights later is any indication, SOTY’s list was probably:
The Antidote
And the Hero Will Drown
Falling Down
Our Time Is Now
To the Burial
Until the Day I Die
“Is This My Fate?” He Asked Them

After SOTY’s set, The Devil Wears Prada was next, and I’ve never really been impressed with these guys that much. Seeing them live didn’t really help that. The songs don’t have a hell of a lot of melody, and I’m just not a fan of the type of screaming that their lead singer has going on.

So after their 50 minute set, All That Remains got their 50 minutes. Ahhh… much better. They started things out right by opening with Before The Damned, and just went from there. A pretty solid setlist spread mainly over the previous two albums (and This Darkened Heart thrown in for good measure), and they sounded good. Even though this was the first night of this particular tour, ATR has been on the road for awhile, so they were in fine form. All of the band members (save the drummer, of course) were moving all over the stage, interacting with each other and the fans. After their set, Oli jumped right down off the stage and started talking to fans, and continued to do so for at least a half-hour afterward. I snagged a setlist from the soundboard, and got both Oli and Jeanne (ATR’s bass player) to sign it. Both of them were more than gracious and happy to chat for a few moments. Finally, on my way out, I also briefly talked to SOTY’s lead singer and told him I enjoyed their performance. A good show on a Monday night, and I even got a little swag to show for it.
