12/14/2009 Hatebreed, Cannibal Corpse, Unearth (Buffalo, NY @ Town Ballroom)

[Hate Eternal and Born Of Osiris were both also on the bill, but I didn’t see them.]

The second leg of Hatebreed’s “Decimation of the Nation Tour” rolled into Buffalo. I was fortunate enough to see a show on the first leg in Rochester (with Chimaira), and that show was going to be almost impossible to top. Adam and I strolled in (after grabbing some dinner at Jim’s Steak-Out first!) and managed to secure a spot on the right-side upper level while the stage was being set-up for Unearth. I’ve always heard of Unearth, but never really checked them out. After seeing them live, I get the feeling I wasn’t missing much. They were good, but I wouldn’t say great. They reminded me of Shadows Fall somewhat, but with less clean singing, and far less interesting songs. There certainly were some kids there to see them, and they got a great response from the pit once it got going, but they’re not for me. Next up were some death metal legends, Buffalo’s own Cannibal Corpse. For a band that’s been around since 1988, they’re heavier than bands half their age. Also, it’s a no gimmick, no bullshit show, as the band just gets up there and slays with little fanfare. As I joked to Adam, it was four Cousin It’s headbanging with a drummer! Death metal certainly isn’t my thing, but when I think of death metal, it sounds exactly like CC. Technically, these guys were fantastic, with some of the solos played blazingly fast, and the cookie monster vocals were just that. I’m glad I can now say I’ve seen them.

At this point I should mention the ever-increasingly-drunk girl standing next to Adam for the majority of the night. She seemed pleasant enough, and her boyfriend was indifferent to the whole thing, but she kept telling Adam and I that we weren’t headbanging hard enough during Unearth and CC, and then continually proceeded to show us what she meant. She could headbang, for sure. Even if it meant knocking her nearly-full drink off the ledge. But her crowning achievement came during Hatebreed’s first song, as she wanted to sit on the ledge, feet dangling over, and rock out that way. Which was fine for all of 30 seconds, before she fell backwards off the ledge (4 – 4.5 ft high or so) flat on her back. And she crashed HARD. Got right back up though! She was a bit less enthusiastic for the rest of the set, however.

So our sideshow aside, time for Hatebreed! Opening with the only two songs they’d play off the new self-titled disc, the crowd was fired up quick with Everyone Bleeds Now and In Ashes They Shall Reap. Somewhat surprisingly, there was nary a new song after that, and the set was quite heavy on older stuff instead. 3 songs from Under The Knife, 6 from Satisfaction… and the rest a mix of the next three albums. Jamey got the crowd worked up, thanking everyone for showing up on a Monday night (the place looked pretty full to me), and even mentioned that the band watched the Sabres win (the game ended right before Hatebreed came on)! Adam and I stayed at our perch up top until they kicked into Perseverance, at which point we couldn’t just watch any longer, so we got down in front to jump around with the rest of the rowdies. That song was a definite highlight for me, as was Live For This, Doomsayer, A Call For Blood, and the rousing closer, I Will Be Heard. Per usual, most everyone down front was into it, screaming along, but again, no real idiots up front. Dare I say, Hatebreed fans “get it”? As I said, it was going to be pretty damn hard to top the Rochester show in July, and this didn’t. However, they still sounded great, we had an awesome time, and this show was another example why Hatebreed has been around as long as they have, and have garnered the fanbase they have.

Perseverance (Turn the volume down. Trust me.)
