Saturday, May 3rd, 2008Trent keeps leaking new songs, this time it’s “Echoplex” through the iLike facebook app. It’s a pretty cool song, just like Discipline is.

On To Round 2, with Discipline
Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008And lest I forget, the new NIN! “Discipline” is the name of the new track, and you can now get it officially from nin.com for FREE dollars. It’s a catchy little tune, reminiscent of With Teeth type stuff. Apparently it was mastered Monday night, and the finished track was emailed to KROQ in Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon, at which point began the internet feeding frenzy. And the real official download just went up today, with another “coming soon” announcement supposedly coming on May 5th. Last time they did this, it resulted in Ghosts I-IV, so we’ll see what happens this time around.

Pop Quiz Hot Shot
Thursday, April 17th, 2008And just for fun, music I’ve been spinning this last while: Ashes Divide (Billy from A Perfect Circle’s new band), 36 Crazyfists, Bloodsimple, Five Finger Death Punch (thanks Adam for the recommendation!), NIN, Sevendust, Theory of a Deadman. RAWK!
Internet Illiterati
Thursday, March 27th, 2008I was greeted with an email notification this morning of a comment on one of the CD entries. The new Shawn Mullins CD, Honeydew, which is a Tiff CD. I get the following comment:

“Since she never does her own reviews, I found Shawn’s own take on the album”
SHE? Shawn’s a HE
Thanks for the tip, dumbass. It usually helps if one reads the *entire* review, which handily started with the line that makes it all make sense, which I gleefully pointed out…

Way to take it out of context, skippy… Back up just one line:
THIS IS CD #1000! Figures, it’d be one of Tiff’s 🙂
“She”, referring to Tiff. My wife. From the line above. Reading Comprehension FTW.
There’s just no accounting for intelligence on the Internet.
NIN sees Ghosts
Monday, March 3rd, 2008Finally, the new Nine Inch Nails album, Ghosts I-IV was up for purchase and legitimate download last night, and I grabbed it this morning. It’s a double-disc of 36 instrumental tracks, broken up into Ghosts I through Ghosts IV. As an incentive to sample the album, Trent made Ghosts I (the first 9 tracks) available for free. As in, he seeded those 9 tracks on The Pirate Bay himself. It could be bought physically in one of a couple different configurations (I went with the cheapo 2CD digipak for $10 plus shipping), or simply downloaded in either FLAC or 320k MP3’s for $5. If you bought one of the physical copies (which don’t get shipped to people or to stores until April), you get a download code for all 36 tracks, for free, immediately. If you can get the server to talk to you. Which I couldn’t. (The traffic to the site was unbelievable.) Or, you can do what I (and many others did), which was go to The Pirate Bay, and download the psuedo-legal 36 track torrent. Either way, they’re mp3’s I actually paid for, and the results, if you like NIN, are quite good. Imagine the instrumental tracks on Downward, The Fragile, Still, and Year Zero, and that’s the vein these are in. Cool stuff, innovative distribution, and since he’s not signed to a major label anymore, he can do pretty much whatever the hell he wants with his music going forward. Should be interesting to see how far this goes.

Two Years In The House, and More Concerts
Friday, February 15th, 2008It’s hard to believe that it’s been two years since we’ve been in the house. Sometimes it feels way longer, but mostly it’s like, “where did two years go?” I’m not really sure. It’s kinda like asking, where did 28 years go, because that’s coming up in a week’s time too. We’ll be celebrating that at HSBC arena though, at the Sabres/Lightning game. Should be a good one, both teams are playing pretty decent as of late.
We have the Will Hoge show this weekend, and then the parentals are coming up on Sunday for birthday fun, so we’re looking forward to that. Then event/concert silly season heats up for me, as there’s a bunch of stuff that I’m either going to, or I’m on the fence about. Observe:
Sat 2/16 – Will Hoge @ The Tralf
Wed 2/20 – Lightning @ Sabres
Sun 2/24 – Tesla @ Club Infinity – $32 (most likely going)
Thu 3/6 – The Dreaming @ The Haunt (most likely NOT)
Fri 3/7 – The Dreaming @ Water St – $10 (most likely going, its the former lead singer of Stabbing Westward, former drummer of SW and Econoline Crush)
Thu 3/13 – Mike Doughty @ German House (have tickets, going with Matt)
Fri 3/14 – Sun 3/16 – Atlantic Hockey Champs (have tickets, RIT better make it!)
Sat 3/15 – Chevelle/F11 @ Water St – $28 (most likely NOT going)
Fri 3/21 – Matt Good @ Water St – $17 (already saw him once, but I may go again)
Wed 3/26 – Hatebreed @ Water St – $25 (probably will)
Fri 3/28 – Raine Maida @ Town Ballroom – $30 (on the fence, would like to, but $30 is kinda steep)
Sat 3/29 – Matt Good @ Club Infinity – $29 (not likely, esp. if I do go to Water Street)
Wed 4/9 – The Dreaming @ Infinity (probably not, unless the Water St. show is the best show I’ve ever seen, EVER)
Sat 4/12 – Bandits @ KHawks (have tickets)
Sun 8/3 – Rockstar Mayhem @ Darien Lake (waiting for this to go on sale, Slipknot, Disturbed, Sevendust, 36 Crazyfists, etc, etc)
I Tweaked The CD Pages… Again.
Friday, February 8th, 2008I’m not sure if anyone even actually looks at them, but I’ve remade all of the entries for the CD collection, so that it’s completely in line with the Readerware database I have. At this count, we’re up to 993 CD’s, only seven more until 1000! But anyway, all the album covers are there, there’s tracklistings, and of course, my opinions falling on deaf ears.
Naturally, I’m still pondering some kind of convergence between databases for the CDs and the MP3 collection, with all kinds of searchable goodness. That’s gonna take forever, and probably won’t ever happen. But let the little geek dream.
Off the dork topics, it’s nice to see that the Sabres are finally playing well again. We’ll see how they fare against Boston tonight. I love the fact that they’re keeping Pat Kaleta up with the big club, and I love how, much like a frat boy at Mardi Gras, he’ll hit anything that moves. Keep it up PK!
