Review:

Since I bought “A Different Kind Of Pain” at Best Buy, they packed in a one-track with a previously unreleased song, titled ‘Check Please’ (Circuit City got a piano version of Wasted Years). Since it was floating around the internet from the Year of the Spider days, I’d had it for awhile, but now I can say I’ve got it ‘officially’.

Review:

This album picks up where Year of the Spider left off, with Cold becoming less rough around the edges, more polished, and just plain sounding better. Scooter is singing cleaner, and the songs are more complex as well. The lineup has seen a couple of changes, as both original guitarists went elsewhere, and they moved labels from Geffen to Lava. This album was definately a step in the right direction for them, however, it proved to be their last.

Review:

A lot more singing from Scooter on this one, and the music was just plain better. There was more emotional, personal content this time around. Stupid Girl was the biggest single, and my least favorite song on the album. After seeing them a million times on 13 Ways, I only saw them twice on this album.

Review:

WEDG always had bands come in for Q&A while doing acoustic songs. Mary and I were able to attend Cold’s Edge Session, and I was able to garner a CD of the performance as well. How we got into this show is a story in and of itself… from my concert review:

This was another one of 103’s Edge Sessions, where bands come in and play acoustically in a hole-in-the-wall bar for 25 people or so. You have to win tickets off the radio to get in. _Usually_. Mary and myself hauled down there not having tickets, and much to our delight, we found Cold’s bus on the side of the bar. As we approached the bus, the side door of the bar opened up, and Sam, Jeremy and Kelly walked out! I got some autographs, and then told Jeremy that ‘this is one of those bullshit ya gotta call the radio station and win things, and we didn’t win, is there any way you can get us in” Sam said he was gonna go talk to one of their road guys, that he didn’t think it was going to be a problem. He disappears behind the bus (while all the while, some dude was bitching about where the bus was parked). So out comes Scooter and Terry with one of their crew guys. I asked Scoot for an autograph, and he’s like ‘I’ll get ya later, you guys are coming in with us.’ SCORE!! We walked in the side door, Scoot and Terry went up on stage, and we got second row seats! It was just the two of them on stage, and the other three were out on the bus because Scoot said the rest of the band mocks them when they play! So Adam12 (the idiot DJ) gets up on stage and the show starts. They play Just Got Wicked right off the bat, then End Of The World. They talk some, Scooter mentions how they pulled all the shades because they want it dark, ‘We’d melt in the light’. Then they play No One, and hit a ‘commercial break’. During the middle, Scooter kinda asked what everyone wanted to hear, so I yelled ‘STRIP HER DOWN!’ Scooter’s eyes lit up, then he’s like ‘Nah, we can’t do that one, but we got one we’re gonna play instead’. So they come back from commercial, and they play Ugly!!! I think there were two other people there that even knew the song, but me and Mary were silently rockin out’ 🙂 Then they let the audience ask some lame questions, and to close it out, they played Bleed! It was amazing, Scooter sounded incredible. Right after the set, we stood up to kinda get in line for autographs, and Terry came down from the stage and handed me his pick! I asked him about doing Staind’s MTV Unplugged set, and he said it was awesome, and that he was kinda nervous’ We got autographs from the rest of the guys, thanked Scooter and Terry for getting us in, and booked across town to the Boyhitscar show at Showplace the same night.

Review:

I actually did the Midnight madness thing at the House of Guitars to buy this album (and the receipt got me a free Cold knit hat in a promotion). I damn near wore this out, and at one point owned something like 5 copies of this in different incarnations, or to get pack-in discs or what not. As for the actual music, they weren’t really nu-metal in the usual sense, although they got lumped in with those type of bands. Scooter can actually sing, and the music actually had melody. They could even go acoustic (with Bleed). I saw these guys a ton between 2001 and 2002, and they’re some of the best concert memories I have.
