In anticipation of seeing them with Cold, I checked out Volbeat again. His voice just makes me want to listen to Kilgore instead.

07/22/2011 The Tea Party, The Etchings, Son of the Son (Lockport, NY @ Ulrich City Centre)
By Eric | July 23, 2011 7:46 am
Ah, the Lockport Canal Concert Series, which saw the return of Our Lady Peace to the area (for me anyway) in 2009, and this year brought back another all-time Canadian favorite, The Tea Party. I came straight from work, so I arrived just as The Etchings were starting. I confess I really wasn’t paying too much attention, as I was conversing with Sara, Joe, and everyone else that eventually filled in, but what I did catch was your standard jangly indie-rock. Same deal with the much-heralded Son of the Son, I was much to into being social to really pay attention.
But after all that was the band we came to see! Jeff Martin, Jeff Burrows, and Stuart Chatwood walked out to a thunderous ovation, and ripped into Writing’s On The Wall. Once they followed that up with The Baazar, it was like they’d never left. The band itself sounded fantastic, and even though the set proved to be mostly a re-hash of every show we’d seen since about 2003 onward, after six years away it didn’t really matter. One highlight that I know I hadn’t seen too often was Sun Going Down, so that was pretty cool. It was about that time that Jeff Martin started to lose his voice, which I’m guessing is what led to Correspondences and The River getting axed (they’d been playing those in Canada a couple of days prior). It didn’t *really* matter though, because I think everyone was just happy to have the band back and playing again. The last three songs (Save Me, then the Temptation and Sister Awake encore) were practically sing-a-longs anyway, so it’s not like Jeff’s lack of voice ruined the moment or anything! Save Me was especially nice as we got Jeff Buckley’s Last Goodbye as the insert for a chance (it’s usually Kashmir), and the usual extended Sister Awake was a stellar note to go out on. As I said, just having the band back and playing together again is a treat, and for them to pick Buffalo/Lockport as one of the first stops on the reunion tour (and to draw 10,000 people!) was pretty special.

07/02/2011 Soundgarden, Coheed and Cambria (Toronto, ONT @ Molson Ampitheatre)
By Eric | July 8, 2011 2:32 pm
This show was announced back in April, and the tickets through the fan club went on sale not soon after. I suffered through a two-hour website outage, but persevered and got my pair of tickets for the GA pit down front. Karl and Kelley made a weekend out of this with Tiff and I, so the girls were left to their own devices after dropping Karl and I off at the venue. After purchasing giant beers (and almost losing my license behind the cash register!) we chilled on the lawn during the setup time, and meandered our way down to the alcohol-free pit right before Coheed started.
I knew very little about Coheed and Cambria, while Karl is a fan, so he was was pretty stoked to see that they were the opener. I was curious to see them, and I was very impressed with what I saw. Lead singer Claudio Sanchez is quite distinctive with his Sideshow Bob-esque afro, and his guitar playing was just as impressive. The rest of the band was also highly skilled, and even though I knew nothing besides the closer “Welcome Home”, the other songs more than held my interest. Coheed was actually a great fit as an opener for a band like Soundgarden. Thanks to setlist.fm, C&C’s setlist was as follows: No World For Tomorrow, Gravemakers And Gunslingers, Ten Speed (Of God’s Blood And Burial), Delirium Trigger, Here We Are Juggernaut, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, The Camper Velourium III: Al the Killer, Welcome Home

After wandering a bit during the set change, Karl and I settled in just right of center, about 8 people deep, and primed ourselves for a show we’d been waiting about 15 years to see. Soundgarden took to the stage, and started with the “new” song Black Rain, to the roar of the crowd. What followed was two hours of music bliss, considering I really didn’t care what they played, so long as they played. And play they did. Chris Cornell was hitting all the notes, Kim Thayill wailed on his guitar, Matt Cameron was his usual acrobatic self, and Ben Sheppard was patrolling his side of the stage with authority. They sounded fantastic, looked fantastic, and the crowd responded in kind. Obvious crowd pleasers included Spoonman, Fell on Black Days and Black Hole Sun, but they gave the die-hards some love too, playing Searching with my Good Eye Closed, Gun, Ugly Truth, and even going way back with Beyond The Wheel. Mainly because it’s my all-time favorite SG song, I thought Outshined was the highlight of the night, but closing with Slaves and Bulldozers was a close 2nd. (Think I like Badmotorfinger much?) As for the crowd, there was a bit of a mosh pit front and center, but even they were respectful, while the rest of the GA section was quite orderly, everyone moving around, but not killing each other. Meanwhile, the seated section and the lawn were PACKED. Just a sea of people. Very very cool to see. This was one of those shows that there really isn’t a ton to say about it other than that it was amazing. I think I looked at Karl when it was over and just said “WOW”. Wow indeed.
