06/24/2001 Artvoice Festival: Econoline Crush, Oleander (Buffalo, NY @ Chippewa St. & Delaware Rd.)
By Eric | June 24, 2001 11:59 pm
This was a freebie put on by the Buffalo independent newspaper Artvoice, and among the 30 some-odd bands and 3 stages, EC and Oleander played the main stage. Oleander went on at 4, we got there early enough to check the place out, and since the backstage area was pretty much wide open (the stage was set up in the middle of delaware rd), we wandered around the back. We ended up talking to Johnny from EC for a little bit, Sara and Adrienne got autographs from him and Mark. We headed back around front to catch Oleander, who sounded really good. Played a lot more off of February Son than we would have thought. In no particular order, they played: Come To Stay, Stupid, Down When I’m Loaded, Benign, Unwind, Why I’m Here, I Walk Alone, Lost Cause, and Are You There.
Then after a rather quick set change, Econoline came out and blasted into TDM! The guys were on as usual, and ripped through all the good stuff: X3, Sparkle and Shine, Surefire, Sinking, Trash, My Salvation, Home, Make It Right, You Don’t Know, and Wicked once again with the Head Like a Hole insert. Home seemed a little flat, but this round of Wicked/HLAH more than made up for it! We didn’t feel like sticking around this time, so right after the set we pretty much left. Both bands were excellent though, and the day was beautiful as well!
Found a video with a brief interview and some show clips!
The first 18 pics are from Sara, and the rest are from this kid Scott who posted to the EC board.

500 CDs!
By Eric | June 18, 2001 4:38 pm
Yes, the inevatible has happened, the 500 cd barrier has been broken, the CD that holds the prestegious honor is the American Version of the Matthew Good Band’s Beautiful Midnight. (Yeah, its a double., I had the Canadian one, so what?)
Toronto was a blast this weekend, Depeche Mode was pretty cool, and chillin at home sunday was fun too. Jake’s birthday / Father’s day, so dad and Jake were getting stuff. Buying for dad is easy… 2-4 of Heineken and you’re done!
This weekend is shaping up for a co-op reunion, then Amandas graduation on sunday, followed by Econoline Crush / Oleander down on Chippewa for free! 🙂

06/16/2001 Depeche Mode, Poe (Toronto, ONT @ Molson Ampitheatre)
By Eric | June 16, 2001 11:59 pm
Hung out with Carolyn all day, she graciously let us stay over at her place so we didnt have to drive back. We had lawn seats, so we were pretty far back. Poe started right at 8, and she sounded really good, much better than PJ Harvey. Angry Johnny was the only song that I knew, but her entire set was impressive, too bad I couldnt see most of it. Everyone was still filing in at that point, so we had a better time commenting on all the people walking in front of us. By the time DM came out, everyone was in. They had a hell of a light show, wasnt very involved, but the minimalist approach worked. It seemed to me that more people got into it as the night wore on. The setlist was: Intro tape: Easy Tiger – Dream On (Live Instrumental Acoustic) / The Dead Of Night / The Sweetest Condition / Halo / Walking In My Shoes / Dream On / When The Body Speaks / Waiting For The Night To Fall / The Bottom Line / Breathe / Freelove / Enjoy The Silence / I Feel You / In Your Room / It’s No Good / I Feel Loved/ Personal Jesus. Then for the Encore: Home / Clean / Black Celebration / Never Let Me Down Again. For only knowing about 6 songs, I enjoyed myself! From the DM experts Sara and Amanda, the show got a thumbs up!

entertainment is a sham
By Eric | June 5, 2001 10:58 am
The kids whose billions pay for this machine are not only fully aware it’s a sham, they embrace the cynicism and still manage to enjoy the show.
I guess the music industry is the 3rd to go down this route, where the 2nd was politics, following the lead of the professional wrestling.

Christina damages our eardrums
By Eric | June 4, 2001 1:43 pm
Christina Aguilera is suing a New York record label that plans to release an album of demos she recorded at the age of 14, before she and her navel became internationally ubiquitous. The singer claims that the release of the CD, Just Be Free, will cause “irreparable damage.” Which makes it different from all her other records exactly how?

05/31/2001 U2, PJ Harvey (Buffalo, NY @ HSBC Arena)
By Eric | May 31, 2001 11:59 pm
Amanda’s first real show! There was a heart-shaped walkway that jutted out from the stage, and we were about 4 people deep from the barrier at the point of the heart. PJ Harvey played a lackluster 45 minute set, I thought she was rather boring, a lot of others seemed to as well. Then U2 came out and kicked right into Elevation… these guys live up to all the hype and then some! Bono is totally dynamic up on stage, a lot of crowd interaction, and the rest of the band sounded tight as hell. Playing a good mix of stuff off of All That You Can’t… and the older songs, they made good use of the walkway, playing out by us most of the night! The only crowdsurfer of the night was brought up on the walkway by Bono, who let him dance for awhile and then jumped back into the crowd. A girl was brought up on stage for a hug, and a second girl later in the set was actually humped by Bono! The entire band came down and played Desire right in front of us! Bono talked about how the 3rd show they ever played in the US was in Buffalo, and it was also the night John Lennon was shot. They also did a little tribute to Joey Ramone. Two encores later, they closed with All That You Can’t Leave Behind. U2 played for a solid two hours and then some, and totally made my $45 ticket completely worth it.
Setlist: Elevation, Beautiful Day, Until the End of the World, Even Better Than the Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, In My Life/Stuck In a Moment, Kite, Gone, New York, I Will Follow, Sunday Bloody Sunday/Get Up Stand Up, In A Little While, Desire, Stay, Bad/40, Where the Streets Have No Name, Pride. Encore(s): Bullet the Blue Sky, With or Without You, The Fly, One/She’s a Mystery to Me, Walk On.
Bad

The Stevie Ray Vaughan collection is coming along nicely… Record Archive was a goldmine today, as I found no less than 5 SRV cds! (Well, 4 if you don’t want to count Family Style). Plus Clapton Unplugged!
Fridays was pretty cool last night, Karls friends from high school came up and we had a blast. Actually got to Rafal’s place [http://come.to/461] too!
