02/04/2002 Sevendust, Gravity Kills, Flaw, Stemm (Buffalo, NY @ The Sideshow)
By Eric | February 4, 2002 11:59 pm
I arrived a bit early, about 5:15, and the doors opened at 6:30. Luckily there was literally no one there yet, so I got to sit in the car most of the time and stay warm. I wandered around the back and met Clint from Sevendust for two seconds. Went back and actually got to wait inside the “lobby” of the Funhouse instead of waiting outside. The doors opened at 6:30, and we milled about in the Funhouse for a half hour until Stemm was about to start, when they opened the doors to the Sideshow right away. Everyone piled in, and (as usual!!) I got a barrier spot.
We only had to wait a half hour until Flaw came on, and they opened it up right and rocked the place! It was nice actually knowing the songs this time around; that always makes for a better time. They played Reliance, Whole, Scheme, Amendment, Only The Strong, Get Up Again, and Payback. The crowd seemed sufficently into it, and there were a number of people in the front that knew the songs.
Gravity Kills was up next, and they came out and whipped the crowd up pretty good as well. Jeff, the lead singer, commented after Guilty that he was glad everyone remembered who they were, because their new album is the first since 1998’s Perversion. The keyboard player had this steel engineering marvel for a keyboard stand, with a universal joint and a couple heavy duty springs that let the keyboard go all over the place and amazingly not get busted up. RIT would be proud! I managed to snag a setlist, so I can remember exactly what they played: Love Sex and Money, Down, Guilty, Take It All Away, Never, Falling, Blame, One Thing, Alive, and Enough. A healthy mix of songs from the previous two albums and the new one.
Then it was time for Sevendust. Let me start out by saying I have never seen a band have so much fun up on stage, interacting with each other and the fans. Just incredible! Opening with Black, then into Denial, Redefine, Too Close to Hate (Walk insert), Trust, Rumblefish, Angel’s Son (at which point Lajon gave a little speech about Lynn Strait and 9/11), Tits On A Boar, Shine, and Crucified ended the main set. Then they came back for Praise, Waffle and closed it off with Bitch. The amount of crowd interaction was amazing, every member made eye contact with tons of fans, and they must go through a million picks a night because they’re always handing them out. I was in front of Vinnie for most of the night, and I had a direct line of sight to Morgan behind his kit too. Right before the end of Crucified, I caught one of Morgan’s drumsticks! Then, at the end of the show, Clint was giving people high-fives and whatnot, and he handed me one of his picks! After the show, I wandered around a little bit, and got autographs from Chris and Lance from Flaw, Jeff and Brad from Gravity Kills, and Clint from Sevendust. It was an amazing show, and ranks up there with the best that I’ve been to!

all the project could have been
By Eric | January 23, 2002 12:16 am
Project still going to take utterly too long, but I got a lot of milage out of “And All That Could Have Been” tonight, especially in light of watching the MTV2 special (which I also taped). Both discs are really good, see Sara’s blog for a non-stop two day run down of the whole thing… I’jj just say it’s good 🙂
I only have one class tomorrow, OS Scripting, then work till 1. Have to work on my mini presentation on Millard Fillmore for thursday. yippie! 🙂
Current mood: tired, done with HW for today
song: NIN – Leaving Hope (Still)
shirt: still fragility 2000

skidding on glistening zippy buttocks
By Eric | January 17, 2002 10:52 pm
Long day #2 of the week over and done with, Internetworking Midterm was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be, and not nearly as bad as everyone in class made it out to be… Presidency was okay, 4 hour IDM actually went pretty fast, and now I just realized that I left my ZIP disk in the lab, so either I can pick it up tomorrow, or get my file off the computer (love the IT labs, they actually have logins, its kinda nice), because its half my freakin project I think, all the work I did, is all code I can reuse… it wasn’t rocket science, but it took a lot of time! Next week is gonna be hella long, all kinds of shit due, I can do it a bit at a time, but making myself do it is the trick. 🙂
Sat and watched MTV for like two hours, 20 years of Rock on MTV, it was actually a decent show, talking about how hair metal gave way to grunge gave way to the new-metal/aggro stuff on now. Had a thing about NIN and Manson, and Manson’s MTV VMA performance of The Beautiful People, and this elicited a great Trent line, talking about Manson’s outfit that night…. “Those glistening white…. buttocks…”. They interviewed Sebastion Bach about a lot of people, so I had to throw Skid Row in the CD player… 🙂 (See, its because of goofy music impulses like this that I own 500 some odd CD’s and need to have them ALL at my disposal!)
current mood: HAIR METAL!!
song: Skid Row – 18 and Life
shirt: Tool / Pre-Seminal 2001

screwed by the goos
By Eric | December 31, 2001 2:07 pm
So I came back to Rochester Saturday afternoon, hung out, did a lot of nothing, made Dad’s steak (mm mm good!) did a little shopping, and crashed. got up late yesterday, hit the mall with Kelley and Mary, and then embarked on the grand disappointment that was the WNY Food Bank Benefit.
Keep in mind, this is not the review of the show, just the diatribe on how the night went down, the review I’m passing off on Mary if she so desires, as she’s got a lot to say about this too…We had been forewarned, as the ticketbastard website had noted that there was no implication of a full set by any of the bands. Which I expected. I don’t think anyone else did though, because I’m sure they didn’t say anything at the ticket window, and nowhere on the ticket itself did it say anything. The show started promptly at 7, with the opening act of Lance Diamond with Them JazzBeards. For 3 songs, 15-20 minutes, which all of the following bands got as well: Spirit of the West, The Juliana Theory, A gospel choir from Niagara Falls, the band that shall not be named (begins with a V, you all know who I mean!), CO Jones, Universal Honey, and finally the biggest letdown of them all, the Goo Goo Dolls.
Ok, yes this was for the WNY Food Bank, a very worthwhile cause. We brought our food as dutifully asked, and I wasn’t expecting a full set. However, I’m sure less seasoned concert goers were not aware that they weren’t going to see a full-on Goo show. I was expecting at least 8-9 songs, a 40-45 minute shorter set, but long enough to be out there for some resemblence of a concert. But noooooooooo…. how many songs did the Goo play? SIX! SIX lousy songs. It took them a whole 25 minutes. (For those keeping score at home, the set was Slide, Black Balloon, Naked, Broadway,. Burning Up, and an encore of a cover of American Girl (Tom Petty I’m told)). So anyway, yeah, six songs. Their hometown, and the greedy bastards stiff all of Western New York and play SIX songs. Each of the past Shredd and Ragan Misfit Xmas shows cost the donation of a toy, and all the bands played a regular set. OLP for the turkey show played a full set also. Why couldn’t the Goo’s, the hometown band, do the same? All of those shows were put on by the Edge, and this one conspicuously was not. I’m kinda glad now the Edge wasn’t pushing this harder.I think it speaks very poorly of them to cheap out the way they did. What heroes they could have been by playing a full set for the people. They kept talking about how it was great that everyone came out in spite of the snow. Well how about a little bit more gratitude? I’m personally not a Goo fan by any means, and the initial reason for going was because Partice wanted to go, Mary and I never turn down a show, and Sara was going to come also, Adrienne and Danielle also bought tickets. Good thing they didn’t postpone Toronto for this, and Trice worked instead. The car is a better goal than this sham of a show.
Like I said, I feel good about donating the food, and it was a great cause, but the execution was very poor on the Goo’s part. I just think to all the other beneift shows I’ve been to that have been really cheap, and all the bands played full sets. Matt Good at Variety Rocks, and another Food Bank show, in Rochester, with Splender was a full set also. Shame on the Goo’s for leading on the less knowledgeable.

12/30/2001 WNY Food Bank Benefit: Goo Goo Dolls, Universal Honey, CO Jones, Velour, Niagara Falls Gospel Choir, The Juliana Theory, Spirit of the West, Lance Diamond with Them Jazzbeards (Buffalo, NY at Shea’s Performing Arts Center)
By Eric | December 30, 2001 11:59 pm
This was originally going to be on Thursday the 27th, but due to the amazing amount of snow we received, it was postponed first to Saturday, and then to Sunday. I was already back in Rochester by then, so me and Mary made the drive back with our food donations to the show. I knew this was going to be a benefit show, and the ticketmaster website said that there was not going to be a full set by any of the bands, which I expected, but that was sure what I got and then some, as none of the artists played more than 25 minutes, including the Goo’s! (See the 12/31 rant on the main page for my take on the whole thing) But as far as what I did see, Lance Diamond sure kicked things off on the right foot with his great showmanship, and Them Jazzbeards sounded excellent. Spirit of the West is a Moxy Fruvous type band, and their 3 songs were energetic, and full of fun and enthusiasm. The Juliana Theory are just another emo-type band, I didn’t think they were too much to write home about. The Gospel Choir seemed a little put-off by the fact that no one was getting into their “Praise Jesus” routine, but they did sound good. The band that shall not be named was, well, as they usually are, crappy. Interesting note, the guitar cut out for half of the first song! CO Jones played keyboards in front of his band, doing disco songs, but they were cool. Universal Honey, or rather, the lead singer, came out with a guitar and a friend helping out with singing duties. Then time for the Goos. For all the hype and anticipation, they played 6 songs, rather poorly, and they were too loud, it was distorted. Didn’t sound like Johnny was hitting the high notes on anything. They played Slide, Black Balloon, Naked, Broadway, Burning Up, and encored with a cover of Tom Petty’s American Girl. A rather disappointing show for a good cause. Ah well.

My Way causes karaoke brawls
By Eric | December 21, 2001 7:16 am
MANILA (Nov. 19) – One man was killed and another wounded when a brawl broke out in a Philippine karaoke bar over the quality of singing, a local newspaper reported on Monday. A 54-year-old laborer died of a stab wound in a bar in northern Manila early on Sunday after a fight which began when a group of drinkers said the man with themicrophone was singing out of tune, according to the Philippine Star. The singer confronted the group and a fight ensued, according to the report. The dead man had been trying to put an end to the fight when he was stabbed in the chest, it added. A 24-year-old garment worker is being treated in hospital for stab wounds, the report said. Recent newspaper reports have said Philippine karaoke parlors have been removing the Frank Sinatra classic “My Way” from playlists because fights frequently broke out when the song was being sung.
This is why I make sure I sound good!! 🙂

12/13/2001 Nickelback, Saliva, Default (Syracuse, NY at the OnCenter)
By Eric | December 13, 2001 11:59 pm
Got out of class and skipped lab (made it up the next morning) at about 6:45. Got to Syracuse a little after 8, to find that I’d missed Adema. Ah well. Got right to my seat (I still HATE seats on the floor) as Default was starting. They weren’t too bad, on the same order of a Creed or Nickelback, got the crowd sufficently into it. On their last song, Nickelback’s lead singer Chad Kroeger came out to sing with them. Saliva was up next, played almost the same set as the last two times, except they played Hollywood this time. They were too loud, everything was overdriven, including Josie’s mike, so while it was fun to watch, it was excruciating to listen to this time around. Then came time for Nickelback. They opened up with Woke Up This Morning, then followed up with One Last Run and Breathe. Too Bad was next, and during Where Do I Hide, in the middle of the song, Chad came out with a video camera and ran through the entire crowd, twas rather amusing. He got back on stage, finished the song, and kicked into Hangnail, Never Again, and Old Enough. They closed the main set with Leader of Men, then started the encore by having just Chad and Ryan playing an acoustic version of Big Wreck’s “Mistake”. The whole band came back for a cover of Bruce Springsteen / Rage Against The Machine’s The Ghost of Tom Joad. Then was time for the only song that everyone in the place knew, How You Remind Me. I wandered up to the barrier after the show and scored a setlist! The band sounded excellent, the show was awesome, and it was totally worth the drive!

to buy or not to buy
By Eric | November 28, 2001 2:38 pm
Seen on slashdot in regards to not buying RIAA CD’s and such:
“[The argument is] If you don’t like the price, don’t buy it. Guess what? If others still spend billions, my voice isn’t heard and the only person who suffers is me, depriving myself of something I want because the cost/value ratio isn’t fair. Not much useful martydom there…”
AMEN to that.
