11/15/2014 Mike Doughty (Rochester, NY @ The Club at Water Street)

By Eric | November 17, 2014 12:54 pm

It’s become a tradition at this point, Mike Doughty comes to Rochester; me and Matt have a “man-date” to go see the show! Touring in support of his latest Stellar Motel album, Mike and constant cohort Andrew “Scrap” Livingston came to Water Street for another Question Jar show. After a little pre-gaming at the Genesee Brew Pub, we made our way over to the club side of Water Street, and were pleasantly surprised to find there was no openers, just Mike! We got a fantastic two-set, mainly acoustic (with a bit of electric here and there) show, with the trademark Doughty comedy/commentary throughout, helped by the sometimes funny, usually ridiculous questions posed by the audience. I was particularly heartened to hear a lot of Haughty Melodic material, as that’s my favorite MD album. And he played Lazybones, which I’ve never seen live, not even the one time I saw Soul Coughing! Per usual, lots of hipsters, but lots of fun!

11/11/2014 Saliva, Future Leaders of the World, Bad Seed Rising, The Everyday Losers, Aggressive Betty (Rochester, NY @ Montage Music Hall)

By Eric | November 17, 2014 12:32 pm

This turned out to be a long night. There were a ton of locals, last of which was the first band I saw when I arrived, Aggressive Betty. I’ve seen them a couple times at Montage, pretty standard metal, decent stuff. The Everyday Losers were a young four-piece hard rock band that didn’t sound too bad at all. After them was Bad Seed Rising, an even younger band (high-school!) from Maryland with a female lead singer, and they sounded better and rocked harder than many opening bands I’ve seen. Almost a Black Stone Cherry kinda vibe.

Just how good the kids were came into focus while watching Future Leaders of the World. Apparently they had a hit in 2004 with “Let Me Out“, and were friends with Puddle Of Mudd. Not surprising, as they sounded like a cover band version of them. For what had been a national touring band, they put on one of the more uninspired sets I’ve seen in awhile. Not a whole lot of energy, I didn’t think they sounded all that great, and the songs were a bit boring. The fact that it kept getting later and later probably factored into my impatience as well.

However, Saliva made the wait worth it. A band I’d first seen with Godsmack on the “Bus Show” in 2001, a band that’s remarkably and somewhat surprisingly been kicking around pretty consistently since then, a band that just put out their first album with new lead singer Bobby Amaru and haven’t lost a beat. And coming out near midnight to a small-ish crowd on a Tuesday night, you would have thought they were playing to a 5000 seat arena. Energy, enthusiasm, and just that general “we’re having fun up here” vibe that makes these small shows so much fun. Guitarist Wayne Swinny seemed to be having the most fun of anyone as they ran through a decently diverse setlist, playing all the hits (it’s a bit shocking to look back and see that there’s been more than a few since Click Click Boom), a couple new tunes, and one of my favorite early deep cuts, “After Me”. They sounded really good, the crowd that was there was really into it, and for 10 bucks, I couldn’t have asked for much more.
