07/27/2014 Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden (Toronto, ONT @ Molson Ampitheatre)
By Eric | August 9, 2014 2:11 pm
I always end up having to go to Toronto to see some of the really big name acts, and these two titans were no different. The last time I saw both bands was actually in TO as well (Soundgarden in 2011, NIN in 2008). Drove up with Sara and crew, and we cut it pretty close, what with border traffic, QEW traffic, Toronto traffic, and traffic traffic. I got in just as SG was starting, so thankfully I didn’t miss anything. A very similar set to what I saw in 2011 on the reunion show, albeit shorter. They did play two tunes that I didn’t see then: Flower and the new A Thousand Days Before. This shorter set was heavy on Superunkown songs, since the 20th anniversary of that album’s release had just occurred. The band sounded good, Chris Cornell was spot-on, but I feel like I had an overall better time seeing them in 2011.
My Wave
Outshined (nevermind the pole, the audio is pretty good)
Searching With My Good Eye Closed

Black Hole Sun
Jesus Christ Pose

Blow Up the Outside World
Fell on Black Days
A Thousand Days Before
Rusty Cage
Beyond the Wheel
So after the intermission, it was time to see what cool tricks Trent and co. had up their sleeve. A new light show, some new songs, and a 4 piece band made for a different experience than the prior 3 times I’d seen NIN. They opened with Copy of A, and then into a song I’d never seen live, Sanctified. One curiosity with this setlist, absolutely nothing from The Fragile. Highlights for me included Terrible Lie (because it always is), Gave Up, and I thought The Great Destroyer was pretty cool. The visuals were certainly a sight to behold, nothing like what I’d seen on prior tours. Much like Soundgarden however, I didn’t leave this show with the THIS IS AWESOME kind of vibe that I’d gotten from the past shows. I like the more electronic-tinged NIN stuff, but I’ll always prefer the heavier, harder stuff.

06/27/2014 Sevendust (Niagara Falls, NY @ Rapids Theatre)
By Eric | June 30, 2014 10:36 am
Sevendust show #17! (This puts them in the lead, they were tied with OLP at 16 apiece). The second to last show of the 2nd leg of the Time Travelers & Bonfires acoustic tour. Admittedly, after Southside Double-Wide and being lucky enough to see that show in Rochester, I didn’t think I’d ever see Sevendust play acoustically again, so this was a major treat. I sprung for VIP, which ended up being worth it for the early entry. Strolled up to the barrier, and while we waited a bit, I had people to chat with. Finally, SEVENDUST HAD ARRIVED. The set was a good mix of stuff we’d heard on SSDW, plus the newer tunes, plus some older stuff they’d re-worked acoustically. It’s Sevendust, so musically they never disappoint, LJ was in full throat, and the full house in the crowd was with the band every step of the way. Much like the Rochester acoustic show, it’s the heaviest, loudest acoustic show you’ll ever see. You can’t not bounce during Rumble Fish, no matter how they arrange it. Same thing with Black, for that matter. I was camped out right in front of John Connolly, and LJ wandered over in front of us quite a bit as well. Just a fantastic night. And then, to cap it all off, the meet and greet after the show was awesome as well. I’d met the guys at various times over the years, but to get to chit-chat for a little bit was very cool. Wearing the Doubledrive shirt as a conversation starter didn’t hurt any!

06/21/2014 Weezer, DIIV (Rochester, NY @ Main Street Armory)
By Eric | June 25, 2014 12:02 pm
“I get to see Weezer!” – Chino Moreno
This was a long time coming, because I was actually supposed to see Weezer 17 years prior (almost to the day!) at Edgefest in Buffalo, but we didn’t get there in time. And then I’d never seen them since. Matt wanted to go, his high-school buddy and girlfriend grabbed tickets for us, and so I finally got to see Weezer. It was pretty much worth the wait!
We barely paid attention during DIIV, they’re indie rock. I’m sure they were fine, but I’m not interested.
But Weezer on the other hand, they were a blast. They’re one of those bands for me where I don’t realize how many songs of theirs that I actually know and like, and this seemed like almost a greatest hits-esque sort of set, so that worked perfectly for me. I’d done a little setlist.fm research too, so I got familiar with the songs I didn’t know ahead of time and was able to enjoy them too. I say it every time it happens, but I love going to shows where it’s not “one of my bands”, so I’m not obsessing over what did/didn’t get played, I’m not trying to fight to get down front, etc. I get to watch all the die-hards have a great time seeing a band they love instead. It’s like a window into what I probably look like at most shows lol. We sat in the balcony at the back of the venue, had a great view, I thought it sounded decent (the Armory is never the best, but it wasn’t awful), and I just took it all in. Good times.
