04/27/2009 Gavin Rossdale, Endless Hallway (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)

This show had kinda been on my radar for awhile, but I thought $25 was too much to spend, plus it was on a Monday night. Then I get an email offer for 2-for-1 tickets, but couldn’t find anyone else that wanted to go. Then I find out Tiff had a dinner function at RIT this same night. And *then* I get an email offer to go for FREE. Okay, I’m not passing up free. I could tell when I got there that the tickets didn’t sell all that well, as they had tables and chairs set up in front of the soundboard. Never seen that before at Water Street. Anyway, the first band on was a pop/rock band called Endless Hallway. They were pretty good, nothing spectacular, but not bad either. They kinda grew on me as the set went along. After their set, I ran into Matt’s sister-in-law Aimee, so I hung out with her and her friend Christina for the rest of the night. I always find someone I know! We settled right in the middle of the place and waited for the main attraction.

Gavin Rossdale and his band walked out to wild screams from the female contingent. He didn’t do a whole lot of talking between songs, mainly just playing and then saying thanks. But the crowd that was there was certainly into the set, and there were quite a few people there familiar with his solo work (and that of his other former band, Institute), in addition to those that were hoping to hear some Bush tunes. No one was disappointed on that front either, as out of 17 songs, six were Bush tunes, two were Institute tracks, Gavin played his song Adrenaline from the xXx Soundtrack, and a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide”, in addition to seven of the thirteen from his Wanderlust album. He sounded good, seemed excited to be there, the band sounded tight, and the Bush sing-a-longs were a lot of fun. There didn’t seem to be any problems transitioning between solo songs and Bush songs either, they were mixed in quite well.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention their roadie. A balding, portly man, wearing overalls, with a dour look on his face the whole night, never moving while peeking out from behind the left-side stack. All he needed was a meat cleaver, and he could be a creepy butcher in some horror flick! A fun show, better because it was free, but good times nevertheless.
