Editorial Reviews
The Vermont-based group is led by twenty-two year old phenom Potter, whose vocals have drawn comparisons to the likes Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones and Janis Joplin. Together with bandmates Scott Tournet (guitar/slide guitar), Matthew Burr drums/percussion), and Bryan Dondero upright/electric bass), Potter has captivated audiences nationwide with a Hammond B-3 fueled sound that blends roots rock, funky blues and gospel to thrilling effect. After a recent performance at the Boston Music Awards, The Boston Globe gushed, the act that stole the show was Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. She began by singing acappella gospel tune, then played some searing organ licks when the band cut in. The room was transfixed. Since forming in Canton, New York in 2002, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals have been remarkably self sufficient, booking and promoting their own tours, while independently releasing albums. In 2004, they self released and sold over 15,000 copies of scorching debut disc, ORIGINAL SOUL. The album drew rave reviews from newspapers and magazines nationwide and the quartet built a loyal following through non-stop touring. They amplified their sound and fan base with powerful soul charged sophomore album NOTHING BUT THE WATER. The band has been on the road since its May, ’05 release, tearing up venues on tours with artists such as Dave Matthews Band, Trey Anastasio, Taj Mahal and the John Butler Trio.

Review:
All Music Guide – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Kid Rock has made no secret of his desire to follow in Bob Seger’s footsteps, but it still comes as a mild shock to have Bob Ritchie deliver an album that feels like it could have slipped in unnoticed between Against the Wind and The Distance in Seger’s discography. That’s precisely what the Rick Rubin-produced Born Free is, a striking re-creation of the waning days of the Silver Bullet Band, the time when the energy started to dissipate and a fascination with country ballads seeped into the heartland rock. It’s a comfortable setting for Kid Rock, who has slowly abandoned rap for country as he crept closer to middle age, but Born Free doesn’t feel lazy: it’s tightly written and crisply articulated thanks in large part to Rubin’s recruitment of an all-star supporting band anchored by Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith, Chavez vet Matt Sweeney, Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo, and Heartbreaker Benmont Tench. These pros give Born Free the suppleness of well-worn leather and Kid Rock rides their grooves with ease, digging into the grinding “God Bless Saturday,” laying back on “Slow My Roll,” slyly trading verses with old sparring partner Sheryl Crow on “Collide” which also happens to feature Seger himself on piano, and shuffling along with the three-chord boogie of “Rock Bottom Blues.” Kid Rock demonstrates enough versatility to excuse “Care,” the most apathetic protest song this side of John Mayer’s “Waiting for the World to Change,” where Kid correctly deduces that the least he can do is care, but even that slight stumble works as sheer sound, drifting along upon the Midwestern rock & roll that Kid Rock has sworn to keep alive. Born Free goes a long, long way toward keeping that heartland flame burning bright: it’s familiar yet fresh, and song for song it’s the best album Kid Rock has cut since Devil Without a Cause.

Review:
All Music Guide – James Christopher Monger
The Lost Children, Disturbed’s first collection of rarities and B-sides, arrived almost two years after Asylum, with which the veteran metal outfit decided to embark on an “indefinite hiatus.” Boasting a pair of previously unreleased cuts (“Mine” and “3”), solid enough covers of Judas Priest’s “Living After Midnight” and Faith No More’s “Midlife Crisis,” bonus cuts from extended releases, and a smattering of other high-octane goodies, The Lost Children comes off as surprisingly cohesive for such a grab bag of castoffs, with highlights coming from the searing electro-thrash opener “Hell,” the dark and melodic “Sickened,” the punishing “A Welcome Burden,” and the arena-ready “Old Friend,” any of which could have held their own amidst the roar of their brothers and sisters on the studio albums.
