Review:

Stolen from Amazon:
With its cinematic origins The Odd Couple is the natural title for the second album by a pair who seem to spend as much time in wardrobe as the studio and whose recordings are often compared to film scores. Their greatest hit, 2006’s “Crazy” was even built around a chunk of a spaghetti western soundtrack. Yet after the success of 2006’s excellent St Elsewhere, the collaboration of singer Thomas “Cee-Lo Green” Callaway and producer Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton has become a permanent institution. The Odd Couple certainly lives up to expectations, and though there is no obvious smash to match “Crazy”, it’s a smoother affair than their often hyperactive debut, the unsettling “Open Book” aside. Highlights include the excellent, agitated lead-off single “Run”, a smart slice of off kilter pop-soul, and its most obvious successor, the instant classic “Surprise”. “Going On” manages to weld an eighties pomp-pop introduction to a surprisingly vulnerable Cee-Lo performance while the plaintive, bluesy “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” catches him at his most soulful. “Whatever” is a cute, rather bratty sixties pastiche halfway to Britpop (though no Englishman ever used the expression “y’all”) while the warped bubblegum pop of “Blind Mary” and the more traditionally ominous “Would Be Killer” are opposite sides of the same twisted coin. Informed by rap and dance, but occupying their own unique genre, Gnarls Barkley continue to soundtrack the movie that, so far, exists only in their heads. –Steve Jelbert

Review:

Rapper Cee-Lo and DJ Danger Mouse put together an interesting mix of hip-hop, R&B, rap, and even some soul, including one of 2006/2007’s biggest hits, “Crazy”. A fun listen. This deluxe edition includes an expansive book of liner notes and a DVD with some live cuts and a couple of bonus tracks.

Review:

An in-between sort of release, the audio CD features 14 “unreleased” tracks, including some demos, alternate versions, and stuff that got cut from albums. The DVD has live cuts, interviews, and regular music videos as well. This compilation is great for the die-hard fan, but the audio tracks in particular will most likely do nothing for the casual fan.

We heard about this David Allan Coe / Pantera collaboration for years before it finally got released, a couple of years after Dime’s passing. It ain’t country, it ain’t metal, but it is fun to listen to.

Poison was one of the bands I grew up on MTV with. Between the videos for Fallen Angel and Every Rose Has It’s Thorn, these pretty-boys were part of my introduction to arguably heavier music, along with Motley Crue, Skid Row, and GnR.

Review:

Stolen from Amazon.com:
In 1987, RCA released a one-disc Elvis compilation called The Number One Hits that featured 18 tracks. So how did the label come up with 12 additional number ones (13 if you count the sensational “A Little Less Conversation” remix that brings the King into the 21st century as a bona fide dance/electronica star)’ Well, the ’87 compilation featured only Billboard number ones. “In the Ghetto” and “Burning Love” never reached the top there, nor did “Way Down,” despite every copy of that 45 selling out on both sides of the Atlantic following Presley’s 1977 death. Instead, the new compilers have used the major pop charts in both the U.S. (including Cashbox) and U.K. to determine inclusions. The tracks have all been remixed from original masters, which proves awesome at best (some of the songs have never sounded crisper if, at times, slightly antiseptic) and problematic at worst. Purists will definitely quibble. “A Fool Such As I,” for instance, sounds like Elvis rerecorded his vocals. Hank Garland’s great guitar solo also sounds different. It might be an alternate take. That’s definitely the case with “The Wonder of You.” A few lyrics are even different, meaning this isn’t the same version as the original 45. Of course, none of that should matter to the youngsters who’ve been singing along to “Hound Dog” on the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, or to any other newcomers. Despite the complaints, this is arguably the best single disc Elvis primer to date. Real fans will want to explore much deeper for treasures to be found, but albums like this guarantee that this is one king who will deservedly live very long, if not forever. –Bill Holdship
