Review:

No sophomore slump here. This picks up right where “The Way Of The Fist” left off, and actually got a little better. The harder tracks rock even harder (No One Gets Left Behind, Bulletproof, War Is The Answer), and the slower tracks are very well done (Crossing Over, Far From Home, Walk Away). This is the deluxe edition with two bonus tracks and a 1/2 hour DVD included.

Pearl Jam – 2009 – Backspacer

#Just Breathe
#Amongst The Wave
#Unthought Known
#Supersonic
#Speed Of Sound
#Force Of Nature
#The End

Review:

The latest release from the Seattle fivesome is arguably their most upbeat and “happiest” record. It’s also one of their shortest. These facts in no way are a detriment to how good of an album this is, and how good the songs are. Lots of solid, pure, “rock-n-roll” tunes, and a couple of ballads, including “Just Breathe” which sounds as if it could have come off of Eddie’s solo album. Also of note, since the album was self released, they didn’t wait for a traditional Tuesday release date, and instead gave the record exclusively to Target for a Sunday release. All the artwork was done by political cartoonist Tom Tomorrow.

Review:

I finally got around to getting the companion piece to U2’s first best-of compilation, and it’s probably because I like the songs on 1980-1990 better. In any event, I felt it importatnt to at least complete the collection, since I probably won’t be going for the U2 discography anytime soon.

Shadows Fall – 2009 – Retribution

Tracklist:

#The Path to Imminent Ruin

#Embrace Annihilation
#Picture Perfect
#A Public Execution
#Dead and Gone
#Bark At The Moon (Ozzy Osbourne)
#Age Of Quarrel (Cro-Mags)
#Critical Mass (Nuclear Assault)

Review:

Shadows Fall is back! After the back-to-back Art Of Balance and The War Within releases were both universally praised, Threads Of Life was a bit of a bit of a step back for the band. But they took a million steps forward with this one, putting together everything that makes me love Shadows Fall: awesome riffs, awesome solos, killer drumming, and Brian Fair’s yelling and screaming over it all. They’ve worked in just the right amount of melody to keep it fresh and listenable also. Early favorite track: King Of Nothing, which features Lamb Of God’s Randy Blythe, and just rips. Much like The War Within was, I think this is going to become a “go-to” album when talking about American metal.

#Goddam Kids These Days

Review:

I wish I could say I was into these guys from the beginning (because I could’ve/would’ve/should’ve been), but I wasn’t. That’s not going to stop me from saying that this album is the Buffalo fivesome’s best one yet. I feel they’ve gotten better with each passing release, and NJA tops them all. More crafty lyrics from Keith Buckley, raucous guitars from Jordan Buckley and Andy Williams, and Jordan’s artwork throught the packaging is pretty damn cool too. They call it “Southern Hardcore”, I just call it great to listen to.

#New Damage

#Into The Void (Sealth)
#Girl U Want
#Stray Cat Blues
#She’s A Politician
#Slaves and Bulldozers (Live)

Review:

A somewhat rare version of Badmotorfinger, with an included 5-song EP called Satanoscillatemymetallicsonatas (SOMMS). Released in conjunction with the bands appearance on Lollapalooza ’92, it has three cover songs (Black Sabbath’s Into The Void [with different lyrics], Devo’s Girl U Want, and the Rolling Stones’ Stray Cat Blues), a b-side (She’s A Politician), and a live take on Slaves and Bulldozers. It’s not super rare, but you’ll rarely see it at a used CD store. I gave up looking, sold out and got this off of Ebay.

#Time Bomb (Bonus Track)
#The Right Stuff (Bonus Track)

Review:

This is starting to grow on me. I saw OLP over 4th of July weekend in Lockport, and the new songs didn’t do too much for me then, and once the album leaked and I got to listen to it a little more, I got into it a little more. Much like the title, I think this album is going to be a slow burn for me, and I’ll eventually like it more than Healthy in Paranoid Times, and certainly more than Gravity, but I’m still getting to that point. All the press surrounding this says that it’s a return to Naveed, but more mature. I don’t quite agree with that, but it certainly is a step in the right direction from the overproduced Bob Rock stuff on the last two albums. This is the deluxe edition that has two bonus tracks (Time Bomb & The Right Stuff), plus a DVD with behind the scenes stuff and videos.

Shinedown – 2008 – The Sound Of Madness

By Eric | December 23, 2013 1:00 am

Artist: Shinedown
Title: The Sound Of Madness

Released: Jun 24, 2008
Packaging: Jewel Case
Pack-in DVD
Release Type: Standard

Tracklist:

#Devour
#Sound Of Madness
#Second Chance
#Cry For Help
#The Crow & The Butterfly
#If You Only Knew
#Sin With A Grin
#What A Shame
#Cyanide Sweet Tooth Suicide
#Breaking Inside
#Call Me

Review:

Wow. This album turned out to be way better than I thought it was going to be. Even though I’m always flip-flopping on how good they are live, the first two Shinedown records were consistent, and consistently good. Dare I even say great. Even with the first two under their belt, I was not prepared for how great this album is, how hard this rocks (in terms of Shinedown, of course), or the quality, song after song. I like this entire album, and that also goes for the three bonus tracks that aren’t on the CD (I Own You, The Energy, Son Of Sam). Throw those in, and you have 14 solid songs to jam to. They didn’t have a sophomore slump, and this third one was even better.
