Review:

It took me 16 years, practically to the day, to discover ~ find out ~ realize that the live version of “Wasting Time” that’s on this single was recorded at the show I attended at Water Street, back on March 21st, 1999. I kinda was required to obtain the CD at that point!

02/27/2015 Bush, Theory of a Deadman (Rochester, NY @ Main Street Armory)

By Eric | March 1, 2015 9:34 pm

[Stars in Stereo were the first band on, but I missed them.]

This show was a same-day decision for me, but I ended up being quite glad I attended. I walked in just as Theory was starting their first song, and it ended up being a standard non-headlining set for them. Six crowd-friendly hits, with three new songs. Not that I didn’t know already after seeing them 11 times, but it was put into sharp focus how much I’m not the “typical” TOAD fan, seeing as how I was stoked to hear “Drown” again live (easily the heaviest song in the set), and that song probably got the most tepid reaction from the crowd. Tyler’s voice wasn’t nearly as strong as it was back in October, either due to sickness or hoarseness. Lots of stuff being taken down a key or two, Bad Girlfriend was especially noticeable. Nevertheless, the band sounded fine, and they were entertaining as always.

Theory Setlist:
So Happy
Lowlife
Not Meant to Be
Blow
Santa Monica
Drown
Angel
Hate My Life
Bad Girlfriend

Fun fact: I had never seen Bush prior to this night! I did see Gavin Rossdale on his solo tour at Water Street back in 2009, and I was probably the only high-school kid in all of Western New York that didn’t go to the legendary Bush / Goo Goo Dolls / No Doubt show at the Aud back in April of 1996. So I was fairly interested and excited to see what this incarnation of Bush would be like. They started everyone off with a bang, opening with Everything Zen before getting into a bunch of songs from the newer two albums. Only having a cursory knowledge of the newer songs didn’t really matter, as they were quite captivating and sounded like they fit in seamlessly with the older, more familiar tunes. It was a pretty long set (20 songs!), and the band sounded fantastic. Gavin still has it as a front man as well, he sounded great, and caused a great number of men, women, and children alike to swoon and swarm, as during Little Things, he came down into the crowd and meandered among the people while finishing the second half of the song. A veteran rock star move for sure.

And as you’d expect from a band that’s been at it for 20 years, filling the encore with crowd-pleasers was a great way to cap the night off. Playing Machinehead, Glycerine, and Comedown, with a Talking Heads cover snuck in there for good measure sent everyone home happy. A very enjoyable show for a decidedly older but appreciative crowd.

Bush Setlist:
Everything Zen
Bodies in Motion
The Sound of Winter
I Believe in You
Just Like My Other Sins
This House Is on Fire
Greedy Fly
The Chemicals Between Us
The Only Way Out
Mouth
The Afterlife
The Gift
Surrender
Letting the Cables Sleep
Insect Kin
Little Things
Encore:
Machinehead
Once in a Lifetime
(Talking Heads cover)
Glycerine
Comedown
