02/09/2015 Periphery, Nothing More (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)

By Eric | February 12, 2015 2:20 pm

They can’t all be winners.

In another case of being on Nate-time, and the venue being ridiculously early (apparently the first band didn’t even make it to the show due to the weather), I only caught the last two songs of Nothing More’s set. Since that’s who I really went to see, needless to say I was a bit disappointed. Not in the band, however, because they played the hell out of Salem (Burn The Witch) and This Is The Time (Ballast), and only made me more upset that I missed the rest! They’re going on my “must-see” list the next time they come around. Picking up both CD’s was a positive, however.

So then it was time to try to make the best of the rest of the night. I’ve heard a ton of stuff about Periphery, both good and bad. Call them prog, call them djent, call them whatever. I was at least interested to check them out. And I wasn’t interested anymore by the end of the night. I’m not sure if I just don’t “get it”, or I’m just not programmed to like this style, but they did nothing for me. The six guys up there are unbelievably technically competent at their instruments, and the sound quality was great, but it just didn’t jive with me. The people down front (the place was only 1/3 full anyway) were into the set from the first song to the last, so it looks like they went home happy, but unfortunately this concert-goer was a little less than impressed.

Thanks to setlist.fm, Periphery’s set was:
Icarus Lives!
Make Total Destroy
The Scourge
Psychosphere
22 Faces
Ji
The Bad Thing
Alpha
Graveless
Scarlet
Encore:
Ragnarok
Masamune

02/05/2015 Machine Head (Buffalo, NY @ Town Ballroom)

By Eric | February 6, 2015 3:24 pm

Don’t ask why it took me forever to really, *really* get into these guys. I was always aware of them, even saw them twice as openers, and yet never invested the time until early last year, when Robb Flynn started his blogs about the 10th anniversary of Through the Ashes of Empires. I finally gave it a good listen and was like “YOU @#$%ING MORON WHY DIDN’T YOU DO THIS SOONER??”. Went back and got the whole catalog (even The Burning Red and Supercharger LOL), and was excited as hell for the release of Bloodstone and Diamonds. Then, not soon after the album’s release was the announcement of the “an Evening With Machine Head” tour; two-plus hours of just MH, no openers, and Buffalo got one of the dates. Well thank you very much!

I couldn’t kill enough time before the show, and ended up in line outside for about 10 minutes before they opened the doors. Once inside I ended up chatting with a couple of guys, one of which was Gorilla from 94.1 the Zone, who has put on a couple of shows at Montage, and runs the metal show on Saturday nights. Good dude. Anyway, that made the wait bearable, and I slipped down to the floor right before the band came on. The opening strains of Imperium started up amidst the chants of “MACHINE F$#^KING HEAD!” and we were off. There was a healthy number of people in the pit, a lot of diehards up front, and even the people standing in the upper rungs made themselves heard all night. The band sounded fantastic all night long, as a somewhat new fan I certainly couldn’t complain about the setlist whatsoever. They played at least one song on every album (hello Ten Ton Hammer, From This Day and Bulldozer!), all of the “hits”, and five tracks off the new one. During Aesthetics of Hate they gave a shout out to the then-thirteen year old kid that played the song with them the last time they were in town (and that kid KILLED IT too), and I actually ended up talking to that kid and his dad after the show for a brief second.

I know this review is kinda short on the details, but this is another one where it was just fantastic from front to back, everything rocked, the crowd was great, and now I want to see Machine Head again, like, right now!
