I met Matt down in the South Wedge, grabbed some John’s Tex-Mex, then wandered over to the Tap&Mallet for some pre-gaming! We were informed by our bar neighbors that even though it was a GA show, there were seats on the floor. Huh? Sadly, yes, we arrived to find rows of folding chairs on the floor. Blah. Matt and I got some pretty decent seats, and settled in for the opener, Angelo Rose. Apparently he’s a lawyer that got the music bug and does solo acoustic stuff. It was okay, nothing special, the songs were sort of long-winded to me. After his half-hour, it was Doughty time. Just Mike, his guitar, and his book, The Book of Drugs. Interspersed with the songs, Mike would read passages from his book, mostly about his Soul Coughing bandmates. At one point, Mike called out these two girls in the front row for talking while he was, and pretty much publicly embarrassed them. “They paid to see me!” A good mix on the setlist across all of his solo albums, and the book selections were mostly humorous as well. I think Matt and I were the least hipster-ish people in the place by far, so the people-watching was fairly decent also!
