07/27/2024 KRockathon Reboot – Puddle Of Mudd, Hoobastank, Nonpoint, Stabbing Westward, Boy Hits Car, Brand New Sin (Syracuse, NY @ New York State Fairgrounds)
By Eric Bonus | August 2, 2024 4:16 pm
KRockathon was back! Er, Rebooted! The last one had been in 2018, and even that was just the Manson/Rob Zombie tour, so it had been a bit since a proper KRock. The gimmick for the reboot was every band on the bill had played a prior KRockathon. Personally, I’d been to four prior shows: 2001, 2005, 2008, and 2010.
For this one, getting in was a breeze, and the setup at Chevy Court was quite good – vendors on the right side, a big GA area, then more vendors on the left and the VIP area front left. They were definitely anticipating more people than what showed up though, I too thought it was going to be more populated. Didn’t make it any less fun, particularly down front. I kept it off to the side for Brand New Sin, who I had no idea were from Syracuse (shame on me!). Also didn’t put two and two together that they had done a remake of Big Show’s WWE theme on Wreckless Intent. For knowing zero songs and being in more than semi-retirement they sounded really good and had quite a few folks singing along with everything. A good start!

Boy Hits Car was as energetic as ever, and it sounded like they flew across the country, really coming out of retirement, pretty much for this show. They sounded really good, played all the hits, and saved everyone the trauma of watching Cregg scale the stage scaffolding this time.

All these years and I’d never seen Stabbing Westward! It was finally time to rectify that. I’d seen The Dreaming once at Water Street back in 2008, but that was it. I wandered to dead center about two or three people back, next to a guy wearing the only old-school SW shirt I saw all day (what’s up Josh!), naturally started talking and of course we’d been at a bunch of the same shows back in the day. The band came out and sounded fantastic – Lead singer Chris Hall was mentioning that he’d recently jacked up his knee skiing, so he was hobbling around rather than really jumping around, but did not lack for any enthusiasm! They played a nice spread over the four albums, plus Bizarre Love Triangle and their cover of The Cure’s Burn. Totally worth the wait!

I stayed right where I was for Nonpoint – certainly the rowdiest crowd of the day thus far, and the crowdsurfers started in earnest as well. Everyone down front was cool except for the “one guy” (because there’s always one guy) and he was swiftly dealt with by security. Shout out to the security guards at the barrier! They were pointing out the surfers and catching everyone and doing an excellent job, it was nice to see the example of how it’s supposed to be done. Needless to say, Nonpoint rocked the spot like they always do with a nice long set spread out over the catalog, with a couple of new ones in there also. They never disappoint, and they didn’t here.

My middle of the crowd time was over by this point, I grabbed some food and retreated to the VIP section for Hoobastank. I’d seen them over 20 years ago at RIT while they were touring their first album, and didn’t remember much. They were great this time around! Lots of energy, and of course a heavy emphasis on the first two albums, but the newer stuff held up against it just fine. Definitely fun to see them again all these years later.

Puddle of Mudd was last, and well… all the rumors and trash talk about Wes Scantlin has some kernel of truth to it, because while the backing band was good, Wes… was not. He took eons between songs to re-tune his guitar, he didn’t sound all that great, and it was just, eh. I’m not quite sure all the machinations that led to them getting the closing spot for this, but it was the wrong decision, the performance was not befitting a headliner. It was plenty long enough, so much so that I, along with many others, started leaving early. I heard Spaceship and She Hates Me from the parking lot, which was just as well. I got out of there in record time, was able to hit the Byrne Dairy right out front before the masses did, and I was on my way. Puddle of Mudd aside, the rest of the day was great, the bands were great, and I hope they bring it back again next year with even bigger bands.
