12/14/2012 Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Acaro (Buffalo, NY @ Town Ballroom)

By Eric | December 14, 2012 11:14 pm

KsE playing “Alive or Just Breathing” front to back? WITH Jesse Leach back in the band? And Shadows Fall opening? YES PLEASE.

Acaro was pretty cool, they got the crowd hyped enough, even though they lost the PA during their set. They also completed the Massachusetts band trifecta.

Shadows Fall never disappoints… a quick 8-song romp with a couple tunes from Art of Balance, War Within, and the new Fire From The Sky. I got right down front, and when lead singer Brian Fair decided to stage dive, guess who got landed on? This guy! Good thing Brian is light!

Shads setlist:
The Light That Blinds
The Idiot Box
Weight of the World
King of Nothing
Still I Rise
Destroyer of Senses
Divide and Conquer
War

The Light That Blinds

Destroyer of Senses

Then, the show a lot of us in the crowd had been waiting ten years for: Killswitch Engage, back with Jesse! They come out to a raucous ovation and rip into… A Bid Farewell? Swerve! And then Rose of Sharyn after that?

Ok I think I can get behind this. Interesting role reversal, as KsE re-recorded “Fixation on the Darkness” with Howard Jones, so it was coming full circle to hear Jesse do the End of Heartache tunes. It was also cool to have them open with these tunes, as most times when one gets the “full album front to back” treatment, the extra songs come at the end.

So now it was AOJB time, and of course, as the band hits the opening notes of Numbered Days, the entire crowd chanted in unison, “THE TIME APPROACHES!” and we were off and running. I know I hadn’t heard a lot of these songs live, obviously never with Jesse, and I wonder if this tour was the first time some of them were being played at all. Needless to say, there was no shortage of energy in the crowd, certainly no lack on stage, as the KsE boys looked like they were having a blast up there, and holy crap is Jesse Leach a dynamic front man. Running and jumping all over the place, singing, screaming; he was on point the entire night.

Fixation / Serenade / Life to Lifeless

KsE never really skipped a beat when Jesse first left and Howard joined the band, and Howard was a hell of a performer in his own right. However, it seems like there’s a whole new energy in the band now that Jesse is back, and it reflected in the performance to be sure. I suppose it was refreshing to revisit some of these songs that probably hadn’t been played since the album was released a decade ago. At the conclusion of the album, we were treated to two more “greatest hits”, with the encore starting with My Curse, and closing out an immensely enjoyable evening with “The End of Heartache”.

I seriously doubt anyone went home disappointed, I know I sure didn’t! Got to say a quick hello to Brian from Shadows Fall on the way out, and had quite the smile plastered on my face the entire way home!

KsE Setlist:
A Bid Farewell
Rose of Sharyn

Numbered Days
Self Revolution
Fixation on the Darkness
My Last Serenade
Life to Lifeless
Just Barely Breathing
To the Sons of Man
Temple From the Within
Vide Infra
The Element of One
Without a Name
Rise Inside

Encore:
My Curse
The End of Heartache

11/15/2012 Theory of a Deadman, Adelita’s Way (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)

By Eric | November 16, 2012 10:39 am

A good old-fashioned rock show down at Water Street. Charm City Devils were the first band on, but I didn’t arrive in time to catch them, instead walking in during the set changeover. Found a nice spot in the middle of the floor and Adelita’s Way got started. I’ve missed these guys a couple of times for various reasons, so it was nice to finally get to see them. Collapse started things off on a fast and heavy note, and got everyone into it right away. Plenty of people were familiar with the tunes, so there was enough crowd interaction to make it fun. They ran through all of their singles and most of the heavier stuff I would have liked to see, including “I Wanna Be”. Strangely enough, Tyler Connolly co-wrote and sang on that song, yet didn’t come out for a guest spot. Thought that would have been a cool touch. No matter, AW finished off with Sick and Invincible, and for this being the last night of the tour, they all looked pretty fresh, sounded good, and put on a solid performance. I was fairly impressed.

Adelita’s Way Setlist:

Hurt

I Wanna Be
Cage the Beast

Sick
Invincible

One quick set change later and Theory was up. Overall this set wasn’t terribly different from what I saw at Tag’s last year, but these guys are always fun. They put “Nothing Could Come Between Us” back into the set, so this old-school fan had one less thing to complain about, then they dashed the goodwill somewhat by skipping No Surprise (they’d been playing it pretty regularly). On the other hand, in the middle of the set they went psuedo-unplugged and played “Out Of My Head”, “Better Off”, and a great take on AIC’s “Got Me Wrong”. The crowd was pretty happy with the main set closer “Hate My Life”, as there was a pretty big sing-a-long for that one. After a quick second, they started the encore off with Hurricane, then during the banter between songs we got more AIC as they strummed on “Nutshell” for awhile before sending everyone home happy with “Bad Girlfriend”. This was the 9th time I’ve seen Theory, so I knew was I was in for, knew what to expect, and Tyler and the boys delivered. Good times!

08/04/2012 Toadies, Helmet (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)

By Eric | August 5, 2012 8:35 am

A total nostalgia-fest with a co-headlining run for the two 90’s alternative mainstays. Helmet was one of those bands that I probably should have gotten into, but just never did. I couldn’t pick a song out of a lineup besides maybe In The Meantime (and I only know that because Soulfly covered it). Anyway, Page Hamilton seemed to be having quite the good time up on stage with the rest of the dudes who currently make up Helmet. It also seemed like the fans that were there for Helmet were really enjoying themselves. Good on them.

Judging from other setlists on this tour, I saw some approximation of:
Sinatra
So Long
Renovation
Welcome to Algiers
Exactly What You Wanted
White City
Bad Mood
FBLA II
Seeing Eye Dog
Ironhead
Unsung
Overrated
Wilma’s Rainbow
Milquetoast

I managed to worm my way up front for the Toadies, and had a blast. Blast from the past, to start, since they opened with Backslider and I Come From The Water. There was a heavy emphasis on the older stuff to be sure (8 songs off Rubberneck!), not that I think anyone complained. The new stuff got its due as well, with 3 songs off the brand new Play. Rock. Music. and 3 off No Deliverance, with some HB/SA stuff and even a Feeler track (Waterfall) to keep the diehards happy. The band sounded fantastic, the fans were enthusiastic, and I think, given the partisan crowd, that the percussion-heavy closer “I Burn” got a bigger reaction than Possum Kingdom did! (Judge for yourself in the videos below). I had an absolute blast, considering it had been eleven years since I saw them in Buffalo, and not that it really counts, but over five years since seeing Todd Lewis front the Burden Brothers.

Toadies Setlist
Backslider
I Come from the Water
No Deliverance
Summer of the Strange
Sweetness
Away
Waterfall
Push the Hand
Beside You
Happyface
Song I Hate
Possum Kingdom
Hell In High Water
Mister Love
Tyler

Encore:
Rattler’s Revival
I Burn
