the olp-lb connection

By Eric | February 19, 2002 5:34 pm

I just got this in an email:
The members of Our Lady Peace are launching a national search for a new
guitarist. If you think you have what it takes to join the ranks of one of
Canada’s top rock bands, please send in a 3-4 minute video tape featuring at
most two minutes of your best guitar work and one minute containing a brief
interview and/or description of yourself to: Our Lady Peace – Guitar Search 1121
Leslie Street, Toronto ON M3C 2J9. Submissions must be received by March 31,
2002 for consideration.
Are they turning into Canada’s version of Limp Bizkit? I’m not understanding this trend of doing tours or accepting solicitatations for joining high-profile groups like this… I mean, have they no networking skills? 🙂

no longer stabbing

By Eric | February 10, 2002 9:54 pm

Sara gave me word, and a fansite confirmed it, that Stabbing Westward has broken up. Christopher Hall will no longer have an outlet to whine about his chick anymore… what’s he gonna do? 🙂

sanford gets a stereo

By Eric | February 10, 2002 6:53 pm

From the “Just Call Me Sanford” department:
I took out the garbage to the dumpster in our parking lot, when lo and behold, under the dumpster overhang, sat a small shelf-systen stereo! It’s a Garrard, a real POS, but its a CD/Tape/Radio, and it all works! It’s even got this little remote that also works! My guess is that someone deliberately placed it there, out of the rain, by someone, who either bought a new one, or because they thought it was broken (the selector switch takes a little playing with). not like I even needed another CD player, but the more electronic equipment, the merrier! 🙂
(If you’re wondering what I mean by Sanford, go here [http://www.classictvshop.com/shopping/sanford_and_son].)
Current mood: hungry, going to mary’s
song: Pearl Jam – Sleight of Hand

hey mister, mtv really likes your song

Custom’s ‘Hey, Mister’ Makes Its Move, But Not On MTV
February 7, 2 p.m. ET, Launch

New York modern rock artist Custom continues to make a name for himself with his single, “Hey Mister,” an edgy, graphic rock tune detailing a sexual relationship as described by the man to the woman’s father.
The song debuted on both the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts in late December and has climbed to Number 26 (Modern) and 28 (Mainstream) on the current listings.
However, one outlet that has turned its nose up at the song is MTV. “We took a pass on the video due to lyrical content,” a spokesperson for the cable network tells LAUNCH. Lyrics include “God gave her a perfect body, now I’m all up in it” and “hey mister, on your way to work in your Volvo, suit, and tie, we’ll be crawling in your bed soon messing around, maybe getting high.”
Custom tells LAUNCH that the idea for the song came to him while he was in a New York club. “I looked over and there was some guy picking up on my little sister, she was 17, and you have that immediate knee-jerk reaction as a big brother, like, ‘I’m gonna go crush that guy, I think that’s wrong. That’s bad.’ And then I look over and my other sister’s getting picked up on. Then I kind of look at myself and I’m picking up on someone. And I’m like, ‘Oh, this is bad. I’m the same as those guys, I’m just trying to get into someone’s pants. I don’t really like them necessarily, I don’t really necessarily want to talk to them, I just want to get laid, and this is bad,” he says.

Oh, like that’s any worse than any of the rap videos they normally play on MTV…. suddenly MTV gets a conscience? since when??? (BTW, I think the song is hilarious, especially the radio edit, where one of the lines is changed from “tell your wife you’ll be home late cuz you’re at the titty bars” to “… bitty tars” BITTY TARS!!! I dunno, cracks me up 🙂

02/04/2002 Sevendust, Gravity Kills, Flaw, Stemm (Buffalo, NY @ The Sideshow)

By Eric | February 4, 2002 11:59 pm

I arrived a bit early, about 5:15, and the doors opened at 6:30. Luckily there was literally no one there yet, so I got to sit in the car most of the time and stay warm. I wandered around the back and met Clint from Sevendust for two seconds. Went back and actually got to wait inside the “lobby” of the Funhouse instead of waiting outside. The doors opened at 6:30, and we milled about in the Funhouse for a half hour until Stemm was about to start, when they opened the doors to the Sideshow right away. Everyone piled in, and (as usual!!) I got a barrier spot.

We only had to wait a half hour until Flaw came on, and they opened it up right and rocked the place! It was nice actually knowing the songs this time around; that always makes for a better time. They played Reliance, Whole, Scheme, Amendment, Only The Strong, Get Up Again, and Payback. The crowd seemed sufficently into it, and there were a number of people in the front that knew the songs.

Gravity Kills was up next, and they came out and whipped the crowd up pretty good as well. Jeff, the lead singer, commented after Guilty that he was glad everyone remembered who they were, because their new album is the first since 1998’s Perversion. The keyboard player had this steel engineering marvel for a keyboard stand, with a universal joint and a couple heavy duty springs that let the keyboard go all over the place and amazingly not get busted up. RIT would be proud! I managed to snag a setlist, so I can remember exactly what they played: Love Sex and Money, Down, Guilty, Take It All Away, Never, Falling, Blame, One Thing, Alive, and Enough. A healthy mix of songs from the previous two albums and the new one.

Then it was time for Sevendust. Let me start out by saying I have never seen a band have so much fun up on stage, interacting with each other and the fans. Just incredible! Opening with Black, then into Denial, Redefine, Too Close to Hate (Walk insert), Trust, Rumblefish, Angel’s Son (at which point Lajon gave a little speech about Lynn Strait and 9/11), Tits On A Boar, Shine, and Crucified ended the main set. Then they came back for Praise, Waffle and closed it off with Bitch. The amount of crowd interaction was amazing, every member made eye contact with tons of fans, and they must go through a million picks a night because they’re always handing them out. I was in front of Vinnie for most of the night, and I had a direct line of sight to Morgan behind his kit too. Right before the end of Crucified, I caught one of Morgan’s drumsticks! Then, at the end of the show, Clint was giving people high-fives and whatnot, and he handed me one of his picks! After the show, I wandered around a little bit, and got autographs from Chris and Lance from Flaw, Jeff and Brad from Gravity Kills, and Clint from Sevendust. It was an amazing show, and ranks up there with the best that I’ve been to!

By Eric | January 23, 2002 12:16 am

Project still going to take utterly too long, but I got a lot of milage out of “And All That Could Have Been” tonight, especially in light of watching the MTV2 special (which I also taped). Both discs are really good, see Sara’s blog for a non-stop two day run down of the whole thing… I’jj just say it’s good 🙂
I only have one class tomorrow, OS Scripting, then work till 1. Have to work on my mini presentation on Millard Fillmore for thursday. yippie! 🙂
Current mood: tired, done with HW for today
song: NIN – Leaving Hope (Still)
