This is our last goodbye
By Eric | June 13, 2002 11:27 pm
“This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die
but it’s over
just hear this and then I’ll go
you gave me more to live for
more than you’ll ever know
this is our last embrace
must i dream and always see your face
why can’t we overcome this wall
well, maybe it’s just because I didn’t know you at all
kiss me, please kiss me
but kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation
you know it makes me so angry ’cause I know that in time
i’ll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye
did you say “no, this can’t happen to me,”
and did you rush to the phone to call
was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind
saying maybe you didn’t know him at all
you didn’t know him at all, oh, you didn’t know
well, the bells out in the church tower chime
burning clues into this heart of mine
thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memories
offer signs that it’s over… it’s over

06/11/2002 Tesla, Jackyl (Buffalo, NY @ The Sideshow)
By Eric | June 11, 2002 11:59 pm
The original plan was to head right to the Sideshow from work, beating the rush, beating traffic, etc. I had brought clothes and sneakers to work to change and everything also, and that’s all well and good except for the ticket that was sitting on my dresser at home. 🙂 So I headed back home instead, which turned out to be a good thing, because I got to eat and pick up my earplugs. So I got out of the house about 5:30, and figured I was going to run into traffic. The thruway was rather light, and I pulled into the parking lot aboout 6. And it was empty. Completely. So I spun around and browsed the AMVETS store for half an hour or so, getting back to the venue at about quarter of 7. I end up chit-chatting with this guy named Bill and this woman named Kim, both in their early 30’s (remember, this is a show with an older crowd) who didn’t come together. The three of us ended up sticking together all night (we all came by ourselves) and had an awesome time talking about music and whatever else. We got in at 7:15 and secured barrier spots. Jackyl hit the stage at 8, and ripped through an hour long set. Now I’m nowhere near a Jackyl fan, but they were entertaining as hell! They played all the songs I knew (When Will It Rain, Down On Me, Dirty LIttle Mind, etc) and then 2nd to last was their “love song”, aka “She Loves My Cock”, and they saved the best for last…. THE LUMBERJACK SONG!! Jesse James Dupree comes out with a chainsaw, fires it up, and lets ‘er rip! They brought out a cheap wooden stool, and at the end of the song, he cuts it in half, pours “beer” on it (lighter fluid in a beer bottle) and starts it on fire!! And then he smashed it! I actually got half of the seat of the stool, but I gave it to the guy next to me, as he was a much bigger Jackyl fan than I. So theres about a half hour wait between sets, and the crowd being as it was, you could take off and still get your spot back (these old people are cool!) so someone ran and bought beers (and I never drink at shows!). About 9:45 Tesla hits the stage, and opened with Action Talks off of Bust a Nut, and then right into a cover of Sabbath’s War Pigs. After that was out of the way, we were treated to Gettin’ Better, and the order gets fuzzy, but also Little Suzi, Heaven’s Trail, Signs, What You Give, Song & Emotion, Mama’s Fool, Love Song, and they closed with Modern Day Cowboy. They sounded really good, Jeff Keith’s voice was strong, and the crowd was amazing, we didn’t get touched once! The dual-guitar assault of Frankie Hannon and Tommy Skeoch was really something to see and hear, as both of those guys are really talented. They definately looked like they were having fun up on stage, and during Little Suzi, Jeff stuck the mic in front of one of the roadies, and got dead silence! The dude turned beet red, quite funny! I ended up getting a pick each from the two bands, so I even got something to take home… 🙂 Definately something to be said for shows like that with an older crowd, they don’t push and shove and all that, even if they’ve been drinking!

05/14/2002 Static-X, Earshot, Sinnistar (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)
By Eric | May 14, 2002 11:59 pm
Sara and Danielle came up for this one, and Jason came along too, the day before he headed for home. We got there about 6:30, and the doors still weren’t open yet. We started out about 3/4 of the way down the street, there were that many people there already. We got in rather quickly, and crammed in by the entrance to the stairs leading to the balcony, as they weren’t letting anyone up right away. Naturally, the security guards start letting the ho’s up there first, so the rest of us were bitching of course. Sara and Danielle had done their whole concert get-up with shiny pants and all, so finally the one guy noticed the two of them, asked who they were with, and let the four of us upstairs. We got the bench right at the barrier upstairs, house right. Sinnistar came out at 7:30, and boy did they suck. Hard. Imagine Dope, but a minor league, worse version. Yep. He even looked and sang like Edsel. The songs all were way too slow, and sludgy, and not in a good way. After that half hour of misery, we got Earshot. Popular opinion says they sound like Tool. Nope. Not even close. They had technical problems, lots of feedback, and the first two songs sounded off-key. The songs were alright, nothing great, but there was no stage presence at all. None. It was one of the most boring shows I’ve seen in quite awhile. Sinnistar to their credit at least moved. Anyway, after a much-too-long hour wait between sets, Static-X finally came out. Thank God! Kicking right into This Is Not, the crowd went nuts. I’m With Stupid, Bled For Days, and Black and White were next, and then Wayne stopped to talk. The order gets a little fuzzy after this, but they also played the extra track on the Wisconsin Death Trip Import, called Down, then Machine, Cold, I Am, Permanence, Stem, Love Dump, Fix, Push It, and then a one song encore with Get To The Gone. The guys are real goofballs up on stage, laughing, making fun of each other, at one point they told everyone in the balcony to stand up, and everyone did, except for about 5 ho’s front and center. Wayne cracked that he feels sorry for them being in a wheelchair, and knows he’s gonna get there himself soon! Needless to say, they still didn’t stand up. Tripp was wandering all over the place, at one point he walked the length of the bar, even Wayne didn’t see where he went! Since “all these new poser bands” use the metal sign (devil horns), Static-X is starting a new trend… the Fist of Metal! After the set, Tripp came out with a big bag of Pixy Stix, and was tossing them into the crowd, and Ken got rid of at least a dozen drum sticks… we almost got one up in the balcony, but none of us could get our hands on it, even though Danielle, Me and then Jason all touched it! Ken threw a drum head out into the crowd, and some poor kid nearly got beat down for it by some other dude. Yikes. The show was great though, lots of energy, it sounded good, and the band was really into it, as were the fans.

05/04/2002 The Tea Party, The Turnstones (Velour) (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)
By Eric | May 4, 2002 11:59 pm
Sara came up at about 2, and we headed over at about 3. Rick and Joe got enlisted as temp roadies, hauling in and setting up stuff for the band. Karl, Kelley and Dave showed up about 5:30-6:00, and we got in at 7. All of us set up shop right in front of Jeff’s mic stand, all 9 of us stretched out across the barrier! So Velo… The Turnstones come out, and Karl wastes no time in yelling “VELOUR!!!!” at the top of his lungs, and I did it right after him… The lead singer steps up to the mic and just goes “yeah…”, and that was it! We got a good look at their logo, and lets just say they’re gonna get sued by both Harley-Davidson and the NHL! So yeah, 45 minutes of pointedly ignoring the freaky guitar player later, he whipped a pick at sara and ran off. Hah! Then it was Tea time again! Almost the exact same setlist as Shea’s, only instead of The Badger, Jeff sang Gone by himself, and they didn’t play Soulbreaking. However, instead of Kashmir in the middle of Save Me, we got Jeff Buckley’s Last Goodbye! It’s interesting going to two shows back to back, because you can compare them. I thought Psychopomp and Temptation were better on this night, but Sister Awake and (so Mary thinks) The Messenger were better at Shea’s. Regardless, the show was great again. Joe got a setlist from the drum tech, and his friend Aaron’s other friends were giving him a hassle about it, and we almost ended up brawling outside. That ran its course and we hung around a bit longer talking to some others outside. The night had a little of everything!

05/03/2002 The Tea Party, The Full Nine, The Turnstones (Velour) (Buffalo, NY @ Shea’s Performing Arts Center)
By Eric | May 3, 2002 11:59 pm
Mary and I arrived about 6:30, waited in the lobby, and were found by Joe and company. They were told the Tea PArty guys would be coming back to the venue at about 8:00. So we decided to wait outside for awhile, even though the doors opened at 7. Being a seated show, we weren’t worried about fighting for a spot, and since Velour was opening, we didn’t really care. At about 10 to 8, Jeff Burrows walked out, and we got about 2 autographs, and that was it. We were cold, so we went in. Mary and I jumped on tickets really early, so we had 3rd row, in the middle section. Excellent seats! We saw Sara and Danielle about 10 rows behind us, so we sat with them for the first set. Velour comes out, and they changed their name!!! Now dubbed the The Turnstones, they played just as bad as they always have. New name, same crappy band. The thinking is that they changed their name because too many people know how bad they are, so to trick people into showing up, they’re going incognito. Bah. And just when it couldn’t get any worse, The Full Nine comes out. “Hollywood Records Recording Artists”. Caroline’s Spine gets dropped and they signed these guys?? In the same vein as Velour, their singer was worse, the songs were worse, and not a soul in the place was moving. A half-hour later, they’re done and we wait anxiously for the Tea. And we were rewarded handsomely. Opening with Interzone (Samsara insert), Shea’s was captivated from beginning to end. Next was Fire In The Head, Lullaby, Psychopomp with its usual amazing guitar solo, Apathy, and then an instrumental break with The Badger. Keeping with the acoustic, they did Walking Wounded that way, which was a welcome change. Jeff came out with the “Oud” (and said as much!) for Zahira/Favorite Son/Halcyon Days, Angels, Cathartik, Mantra, Save Me (Kashmir insert), and closed the main set with Temptation (The River insert). Jeff came out alone for the beginning of the encore, starting Messenger before the rest of the band joined him. Jeff made a little speech about the white ribbon campaign, and proceeded to play Soulbreaking, then Heaven Coming Down, and finished the night off with Sister Awake (with Paint It Black and Heroes inserts). The crowd was extremely loud, and I believe the place was sold out. They seemed to appreciate the crowd, unfortunately the same couldn’t be said of the 4 old drunk guys in front of us, who ended up getting a drumstick. No knowledge of the songs at all. Whatever. We ran up to the front and the drum tech was handing out sticks, so Mary got one of those. A great show, and left us salivating for more the next night!

04/22/2002 Nickelback, Default, Injected (Buffalo, NY @ Buffalo State Sports Arena)
By Eric | April 22, 2002 11:59 pm
I acutally got out of Routing and Switching lab at 5:30, and immeadiately hit the road, getting to the arena about 6:45. I figured everyone would have been in already, as the tickets said 6pm. Well, there was still a line, which moved rather quickly thankfully due to the crappy weather. I got in and the place was about half full, so I wandered down on to the floor. I milled around during Injected, only noteable thing about them was that they did the Motely Crue “Live Wire” cover again, and absolutely no one had any clue what that song was at all. There were a whole lot of “beautiful people” (as I like to call them) at this show, being a college show, I was not surprised, and kinda glad, because they’d allow me to get closer to the front with less hassle! So after Injected got done I wormed my way up towards the front, ending up about 5 people back from the barrier, next to Scott from Hollowpoint! I’ve ended up next to him at a couple of shows, its kinda odd, but kinda cool. He was there with his girlfriend and her friend, so the 4 of us kinda ended up stuck together the whole night. Defualt was decent, they were better in Syracuse I think, but knowing the songs this time around was a plus. Most of their set unfortunately was spent fighting off crowd surfers. They played about 8 or 9 songs, including (not in order) Let You Down, By Your Side, Live a Lie, Somewhere, a new song called Break Down Walls, Seize the Day, Sick and Tired, Wasting My Time and closed with Deny. After a bit of a wait, out came Nickelback. The crowd went predictably nuts for most of the Silver Side Up songs, noticably quieter on The State tracks, and the two new ones weren’t too bad either. I cant remember order, but it was rather close to Syracuse’s set list, they opened with Woke Up This Morning again, then Breathe, Too Bad, One Last Run, Hangnail, new song 1, Where Do I Hide, Never Again, Hollywood, new song 2, Leader of Men, and only a one song encore this time, starting out playing How You Remind Me acoustically, and then bringing the full band in. Syracuse’s show was longer, and a bit better in my opinion, but this wasn’t a bad show.

Down II damned queens
By Eric | April 20, 2002 4:06 pm
The CD run was pretty fruitful today, not in sheer quantity, but quality. At the Archive on Mt Hope I picked up the Queen of the Damned soundtrack for $5, which was a steal… and then at the Archive on East, I found the new Down CD, II, which only came out on March 26th! Excellent southern rock from members of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and EyeHateGod. Been just chillin for the past couple hours, and then we’re going to Dan’s LEAD conference thingy Most likely a party here tonight… stop over 156 about 9:30 if you’re interested!

RIP Layne Staley
By Eric | April 20, 2002 11:26 am
Layne Staley 1967-2002

A body was removed last night from the University District residence of Layne Staley, a victim of a drug overdose. Staley was the lead singer and guitarist for the Seattle grunge band Alice in Chains. KOMO-TV, citing an unidentified source, said the body was that of Staley, 34. .
A King County medical-examiner’s investigator said his office removed a body from the Staley address and planned an autopsy today, but he refused to confirm the identity of the person. He said it appeared the person had been dead for some time and would have to be identified scientifically.
Staley had a history of substance abuse, and in the early 1990s publicly acknowledged an addiction to heroin.
Now, I was and still am a huge Alice In Chains fan. They were the first band I really took a strong liking to, and thanks to a friend in high school, they primarily got me into collectiing CD’s as well. But don’t expect me to be wallowing in a “Sea of Sorrow” over it, ala Kurt Cobain. Everyone had Layne on their dead pool lists, and while no one wants to see anyone else die, unfortunately he had it coming. But I’ll definately throw on some AIC today in rememberance. Looks like I’ll never get to see AIC proper, but now in light of Layne’s death, seeing Jerry Cantrell is going to be that much better.
