05/22/2016 All That Remains (Rochester, NY @ Montage Music Hall)

By Eric | May 24, 2016 11:28 am

It had been a good five years since I’d last seen All That Remains (the 2011 Share The Welt tour with Five Finger and Hatebreed), and I was less-than-impressed with the song selection that time out. However, a headlining set in my “hometown” club, while the band is between albums? This was a much better experience.

They’d always sounded good, and they did here too. Phil Labonte’s clean singing sounded pretty decent as well, and the screams were on point. The rest of the band was just as solid. And yes, the setlist had more than enough of the heavy to keep me happy. No Knock, Some of the People, Six, and For We Are Many helped balance out the lighter songs that gained the band a big radio following like The Last Time, Hold On, What If I Was Nothing, and Two Weeks. All in all, it was good, and since I showed up late, I didn’t have to wait through any openers!

2016-05-22 All That Remains @ Montage

Victory Lap / No Knock

The Air That I Breathe

Setlist:
This Probably Won’t End Well
Stand Up
Victory Lap
No Knock
Some of the People, All of the Time
The Last Time
Six
The Air That I Breathe
Now Let Them Tremble
For We Are Many
Hold On
What If I Was Nothing?
This Calling
Two Weeks

05/13/2016 Texas Hippie Coalition, Sons Of Texas, Dear Mr. Dead (Rochester, NY @ Montage Music Hall)

By Eric | May 14, 2016 10:31 pm

TEXAS! Obviously the theme of the night. I was stoked to see Sons of Texas, as I’d been spinning Baptized in the Rio Grande since it came out. And they rocked. Lots of intensity, they played all the heavy stuff (none of the ballads), and kept the crowd into it the whole time. Not a whole lot to say other than it was just as good as I’d expected.

SOTX:
Never Bury The Hatchet
King Nothing
Pull It And Fire
The Vestryman
Blameshift
Baptized In The Rio Grande
Texas Trim

I’d never really listened to Texas Hippie Coalition, and the only reason I’d even heard of them is because Ryan Bennett, the drummer for Eye Empire, had also drummed for them. They’ve been around since 2004, however, so they’re no rookies. In checking them out ahead of the show, I got into them a little bit, particularly one song (that they didn’t play) called “Rock Ain’t Dead (It’s Just In Rehab)”. They’re a southern hard rock / metal band, and the singer, “Big Dad” Ritch, is exactly that. Not a small individual by any means. But rock they did! Lots of fun with these guys too. With a closer titled “Pissed Off and Mad About It”, you know you’re in for a good time.

THC:
Come Get It
El Diablo Rojo
Outlaw
Rollin’
Angel Fall
Knee Deep
Don’t Come Lookin’
Turn It Up
Saddle Sore
Hit It Again
Whiskey Burn
Pissed Off and Mad About It

05/06/2016 Like A Storm, Devil You Know, Oni (Rochester, NY @ Montage Music Hall)

By Eric | May 7, 2016 7:46 pm

Montage billed this as a double headliner – as in they booked both Like A Storm and Devil You Know both on their own headlining runs the same night. Devil You Know got their support act on the bill too, and Oni was a damn cool opener. How many metal bands have you ever heard of that have a touring xylophone? And it wasn’t just a gimmick, the band was really good.

I really went to see Devil You Know, which is better known as “the band that Howard Jones from Killswitch Engage is in now”. The rest of the band are no slouches either, guitarist Francesco Artusato was in All Shall Perish, and bassist Ryan Wombacher was in Bleeding Through. It was great to see Howard in a live setting again, he was full of energy (and sarcasm) as had been the norm with KsE. They rocked songs off of both albums, and sounded great doing it.

Devil You Know Setlist:
Consume The Damned
My Own
Embracing The Torture
Seven Years Alone
Stay Of Execution
A New Beginning
A Mind Insane
Crawl From The Dark
The Way We Die
Shut It down

So Like A Storm got to close the night, and that was the band that David and Danielle (!) came in to see. I’d describe them as an Octane band, in that “hard rock but not quite metal” lane. I hadn’t even really heard of them (they were the first band on for the Feb 2010 Shinedown show at the Armory, but I missed them). They sounded good; for me not ever hearing anything by them (maybe the Gangsta’s Paradise cover once), it was a good show. One can tell they can rock the big arenas just as well as the small clubs, as the stage banter and effects would definitely translate. It was a fun night, and especially after seeing the band I wanted to see, LaS was a good nightcap.
