01/20/2003 3 Doors Down, Theory of a Deadman (Rochester, NY @ Harro East Ballroom)
By Eric | January 20, 2003 11:59 pm
I hadn’t been to Harro East since Chris Cornell 3 years ago, and I forgot how nice of a place it is. Me and Tiff got there about 5:50, because the doors were opening at 6:30. They even let us wait in the lobby area instead of freezing our asses off. They pushed us back outside when they were about to let people in, and thankfully we were in the middle, because the side doors got closed. We got in right away and got barrier. Waited an hour for Theory to come out, and when they did, they rocked the place HARD. They opened with Invisible Man, and I was immediately rockin out… Their lead singer, Tyler, noticed me right away, and proceeded to try for the rest of the night to throw a pick to me… none of them even coming close hehehe…. Next was What You Deserve, Point to Prove, and The Last Song. Then came my favorite, Any Other Way, and Nothing Could Come Between Us (which everyone knew, so that one was especially cool). Make Up Your Mind was next, and they closed the set with Leg To Stand On. They sounded really good, had a lot of energy, and looked like they were having fun up on the stage. I managed to snag a setlist after begging and pleading hehee. We only had to wait about 20 minutes or so for 3DD to come out, and opened with Not Enough… I can’t remember the exact order, but after that, there were a couple more from the first album, including Duck and Run, Better Life, and then switching to The Road I’m On, When I’m Gone, and Away From the Sun from the new album. They also played Kryptonite, Be Like That, By My Side, Down Poison, and then from the new one, Here Without You, and then they played Going Down in Flames, although I’d swear it wasn’t on the setlist, and it kinda sounded like it. All the other songs sounded great to that point, but I think they need to work on this one a bit more, the changes weren’t smooth and Brad wasn’t comfortable singing in the key he was in I don’t think. After that they did Changes and closed the main set with Sara Yellin’ which for me was their best song of the night. They came back for a one-song encore of Loser. 3dd sounded much better, and were more exciting to watch this time around then they had been before. I’m thinking this may be due to the fact that the new album isn’t played out yet (for me anyway), and they’re not headling over someone way more deserving, like they have before. So the show was a lot of fun, worth going to, and the best part of all, we were done by 10!! It’s about time they started getting us out at a decent hour… 🙂

RIoT Rich!!
By Eric | January 9, 2003 1:47 am
Quick indeed, out by 10, in by 1… shot home to NT to pick up some of the miscellaneous crap I left, like a jacket, all the DVD’s I got for Xmas, another CD rack, etc. Found out we got a new dishwasher… go figure! Hit the auto parts store to replace my taillight bulb, which lit up, but wouldn’t let my turn signal flash. So that’s fixed. Back up in Rochester, picked up Tiff from work and caught lunch. She had to work again at 3:30, so I went with her, and then went to the Syslab to get some more NetAdmin done. Got some stuff done, headed to ETC to chill for a bit, then got Tiff at the end of her shift and went to her place for dinner (mmm deep fried french fries!!) and put in her new burner. Came back home and studied Computer Crime for a bit, half paying attention to my Nickelback DVD…
I came into my room to find 4 IM’s about this song by some dudes called Logic X, turns out “RIoT Rich” is all about our RIT “culture”. So I fire up good ol DC, and sure enough, the welcome message is pushin the song, and they were smart enough to put up a RAR with lyrics in it!! Not throwing them all up here, but here’s a taste:
got a new tackle box and a photoshop server
hair cut lookin like rainbow sherbert
I wear, sandals in the winter (it’s true)
I don’t buy books, just glitter and glue
have second year standing til I’m 24
raise a family at the art house, second floor
out of all programs, yeah, art’s the hardest
I’m not lazy, I’m a starving artist
even if you think my art is garbage
you’ll love how dope my shopping cart is
drop art? maybe when I’m not retarded
my portfolio’s still hot regardless
friends hit the weed til they choke and they faint
all I need? dry macaroni and spray paint
drawing every day, wow, I’m amazin
probably co-op in the tunnels, working on a painting
It’s only funny because here, its so damn true…
Ok. Ok. Here’s a link to the song! (7.9MB)

12/04/2002 Saves The Day, Ash, Circle and Square, Plain White T’s (Buffalo, NY @ Showplace Theater)
By Eric | December 4, 2002 11:59 pm
This show was Tiff’s show, but she had no one to go with, and I figured it couldn’t be all bad, right? Well, it really wasn’t bad at all! Plain White T’s were pretty cool, your standard poppy-punk kinda band, but they were pretty good, and when the lead singer broke two strings on his guitar, they just kept playing, with him just singing. Circle and Square was next, and put us to sleep. Whiny dork-rock emo at its finest. Snooze. And just for irony, what were they selling as merch? Pillowcases!! You figure it out. 🙂 Ash was up next, back to more regular punk, and they were decent as well. There seemed to be a lot of people there for them. Then it was Saves The Day time. They were better than I thought they’d be, and I recognized a couple of the songs, so that always helps. They sounded pretty good, and not as whiny as on the CD. It was kinda weird though, they ripped through song after song with hardly a pause in between, and not a word from the singer at all. Very interesting. The crowd was interesting too, about 75% were there because they were Saves The Day fans, and sang every word, and the other 25% just tried to dress the part. Entertaining, just like all the other shows, its just a different poser crowd. hehehe. The show was sold out, and there were about 50 kids outside trying to score non-existant tickets. So on the whole, it was a decent night, and best of all, we were out of there by 10:30!! Gotta love when you have 4 bands and still get out at a decent hour!

a night out with the parents
By Eric | November 28, 2002 12:01 pm
So yes, the night out on the town with the parents…. rather interesting…. We picked up Adrienne, and we met Sara and Nate at Hard Rock about 10ish, and the first band went on about quarter to 11 or so… The DollyTramps or something stupid like that. Imagine the worst punk band you’ve ever seen, combined with a singer that makes Courtney Love look like a virtuoso, and you’d have this band. Just absolutely shitty chord and a half “riot-grrl” garbage. And they threw tampons at us during a song titled “On The Rag”. “Excuse me, can I go see ICP now? I think they’d be more entertaining.” Anyway, we got our relief after a half hour when the main attraction “That 80’s Hair Band” came on. These guys are awesome! It’s just 80’s hair metal covers, but its so damn cool!!! While we were there, they played 18 and Life, Talk Dirty to Me, Bringin on the Heartbreak, Bang Your Head, and the last song before we left was Tesla’s “Modern Day Cowboy”. Ever see me when I can’t stop grinning, as in, uncontrollably? That’s what these guys do to me…. its hysterical! So we figured we’d check out the Casino and maybe the Hard Rock “club” thats on the Canadian side. Well, if we’d been able to get over the bridge in a timely fashion. The bridge was backed up all the way back over to the American side, so we said screw it, and went to Denny’s instead! It was funny being there like we always are, but with the parents there too! We didnt quite make it home till about 2:15 or so, so it really was a typical night out for us. hehehe.
When did my parents get so cool? 🙂
so Grandmas house for turkey this afternoon, gonna get stuffed!
current mood: I’m hungry now dammit!

encore medley
By Eric | November 22, 2002 12:18 am
The review is forthcoming, but suffice to say Sevendust was every bit as good tonight as they were Saturday…. AND, they did a little medley of covers during the encore!!! Walk (Pantera), Master of Puppets (Metallica), Sweet Child O Mine (GNR), and We Die Young (AIC)…. it was sweet as hell!! It was the same setlist as Saturday’s show, actually for all the bands, but it really seemed like Sevendust had more fun tonight…. if thats possible, cuz they always have fun up there!!!
So now I’m home and its time to hit the sack, cuz tomorrow morning isnt coming early enough, driving to Rochacha to meet Tiff and bring her back here for two days… should be a blast!

11/21/2002 Sevendust, 30 Seconds To Mars, Cinder, Closure (Buffalo, NY @ Showplace Theater)
By Eric | November 21, 2002 11:59 pm
Sevendust twice in one week!! I flew this one solo, the sets were the same by all 4 bands, but the sound was simply much better this time around than at Water Street. The low end was mixed correctly this time for Cinder and 30 Seconds, and you could hear the vocals better. So yeah, same sets as the Rochester show, BUT…. during the encore, Sevendust busted out a medley of covers! Clint just started jamming all this stuff, it was pretty wild 🙂 They started with Walk (Pantera), Master of Puppets (Metallica), Sweet Child O Mine (GNR), and We Die Young (AIC)…. it was sweet as hell!! The guys seemed to be (if this is even possible) having more fun up there on this night than they did at Water Street as well. Twas a great show!!

60 watts in geneseo
By Eric | November 18, 2002 12:54 am
So as it turns out, Geneseo was a chorus/orchestra concert, and they performed Hadyn’s “The Creation”. So why were we there? Tiff’s parents are friends with a couple, Carol and Gary, and their daughter Lisa was a part of the chorus that was singing in this concert. So Tiff’s mother came down to see the concert, as did Carol and Gary, as did Lisa’s boyfriend and his mother as well. Tiff’s best friend Becca joined us also. So we all took in the concert, which lasted for the better part of two hours, and was a wonderful performance. After that we headed to see Lisa’s dorm room (if you’ve seen one Geneseo dorm room, you’ve seen them all! hehe), and then we went out to dinner. It seems that one of the best restaurants in Geneseo, the Big Tree Inn on Main Street, takes Geneseo food debit, and since Lisa had tons of debit to burn, she was going to take us all out. Dinner was quite enjoyable, if not long. The steak I got was excellent however! Since there were so many of us, Becca graciously paid for Tiff and I with her copious amounts of food debit. Twas a nice treat indeed! It was pretty cool to hang out with that many new people at once, a little nerve-wracking trying to keep the names all straight, but I did okay 🙂
We got back about 8:30 from that excursion, Tiff dropped me off at home, and I headed right back out the door with Adam to the Bug Jar for some more metal! Sixty Watt Shaman and Alabama ThunderPussy!! hehe (WHAT A NAME!!) Sixty Watt was really impressive, reminding me of a Corrosion of Conformity type of band. ATP was much in the same vein, just straight up hard rock. The review will be forthcoming!! Now its time to hit the sack. 🙂

11/17/2002 Alabama Thunderpussy, Sixty Watt Shaman, Low Ton (Rochester, NY @ Bug Jar)
By Eric | November 17, 2002 11:59 pm
Adam was hot for this show, and for $7 I was more than willing to oblige him. We got there as Low Ton was halfway through their set, they weren’t too bad, but I could hardly hear the singer, and the guitar playing wasn’t terribly imaginative. Next up was the main band Adam wanted to see, Sixty Watt Shaman. These guys impressed the hell out of me! They reminded me of Corrosion of Conformity, just real straight up rock, a singer that could actually sing, and some damn cool riffs. It’s hard to write a lot because I wasnt familiar with the songs at all, but their 45 minutes went pretty fast, and I was pretty well captivated. 🙂 And then it was time for one of the coolest band names in rock, Alabama Thunderpussy!! (Too bad they’re from Virginia!) More just straight up rock, they reminded me a whole lot of Jackyl, which isnt a bad thing. Just good heavy music with good riffs. Shows at the Bug Jar are usually all the diehards, there couldnt have been more than 150 people there, but everyone rocked out 🙂

a battle scar to impress the parents with
By Eric | November 17, 2002 11:54 am
So much for the car last night… I’da tried, but no WD40!!! Dammit I’m so unprepared! So Tiff came over with her car (Thank You!) and I actually made dinner again (ok ok, it was frozen fish in the oven, nothing special!!). I dropped Tiff off at her place, picked up Jason, and went to the show… got in line out in the freezing cold about 6:30, and realized that neither of us brought our earplugs.. DOH! I refuse to do shows without earplugs anymore if I can absolutely help it. So what did we do? Came all the way back to RIT of course! Gathered up our earplugs, and drove back to Water Street, got an even BETTER spot on the bridge somehow, and walked right into the place, seeing that it was now 20 after 7… the review will be up shortly, but for the rundown, we got in while Closure was playing, by the time Cinder got up there we were 3 back from the barrier, and after 30 Seconds To Mars we got barrier! Had it for all of Sevendust’s set! Halfway through the encore during Waffle, I got my BEST.CONCERT.BATTLESCAR.EVER. 🙂 Crowdsurfer went over, and while he was flailing around, I got kicked in the face, so I’m now sporting a nice two inch red mark below my right eye… it’ll prolly bruise eventually, but it still looks cool! 🙂 hehehe… (my eye is fine, I had it closed, do not worry!!) I still hate crowdsurfers though… BUT THATS NOT ALL!!! So Sevendust is usually pretty liberal with giving out picks, Morgan throws a couple of sticks…. on this night though, seeing as he went through two of them, I also got BEST.CONCERT.SOUVENIER.EVER!! Long arms come in handy when they throw out a DRUM HEAD like a frisbee!!! I GOT A DRUM HEAD!!! Sweet!! (Oh, yeah, and the show was great too!) Jason didn’t go away empty handed, he got a Sevendust setlist 🙂 hehe. So after I dropped him off, I came back to Tiff’s to give her the car, and iced down my eye/cheek, and then we came back to 156.
Today is another Geneseo choral concert, but this time Tiff’s parents are also going, as the person we’re going to see is the daughter of Tiff’s parent’s best friends, and supposedly we’re getting dinner down there as well… So I get to meet Tiff’s parents for real this time, as opposed to the brief introduction a couple of weeks ago.. so that should be cool, and then after that, me and Adam are going to the Bug Jar for another metal show, this time, its the 60 Watt Shamen, and Alabama ThunderPussy….. how can you pass up the opportunity to see a band called Alabama ThunderPussy??? For $5!!!! hehe…
Current mood: still giddy from last night!!!
