07/01/2001 Edgefest: Tool, The Tea Party, Big Wreck, Sevendust, Static in Stereo, Flybanger, Staggered Crossing, Bif Naked, Project Wyze (Barrie, ONT @ Molson Park)
By Eric | July 1, 2001 11:59 pm
By virtue of overlapping sets on multiple stages, also at Edgefest but I didn’t see: Finger Eleven, 3 Doors Down, Gob, Billy Talent, Mudmen (among others).
Rolled up to Barrie with Sara, Adrienne, Danielle, and Dave (plus some others in a separate car (per Sara) that I don’t recall!) for the annual Canada Day blowout. We got to Molson Park about 1:30, cased the place real quick, then went into the main stage area and set up shop by the left tower. Project Wyze was up first, and immediately made me wonder why Sevendust was on the second stage. Needless to say we were not impressed in the least. Bif Naked was up next, and while her set was pretty good, I remember her trying to tell us the day was a scorcher, when it was really like 65-70 degrees, windy, and cloudy all day… in short, the weather wasn’t as nice as it could have been.
At this point me and David headed over to the second stage, caught the end of Staggered Crossing, who were pretty good. Flybanger was on next, and while pretty heavy, they sound just like everyone else. But it beat the hell out of Project Wyze! We got back to the main stage, then I turned right around and got food with Sara, so we watched Static in Stereo (Todd Kerns’ new band after Age of Electric) while we were in line. They sounded pretty good, a straight up rock band. Sevendust was up next, and Dave and I were right in the pit for them… they played 6 songs, 2 new ones (I’m guessing Praise and Dead Set) plus Denial, Black, Bitch and Waffle. As I said at the time, “If the new songs are any indication, the new album is gonna kick ass!” Animosity did indeed end up kicking ass! Their set was way too short for my liking, we really felt they should have been on the main stage. Speaking of which, we came back to main for Big Wreck, who sounded very good, the stuff from their new The Pleasure and the Greed album sounding just as good as the stuff from “In Loving Memory Of…”. Big Wreck setlist: Inhale, Deep Blue Sea (John Lee Hooker cover), Look What I Found, That Song, Ladylike, Knee Deep, Breakthrough, Blown Wide Open, Undersold, Head in the Girl, The Oaf.
Now it was time for the first of the two real headliners – The Tea Party. They came out, and they didn’t disappoint! Roaring into Temptation, then Fire in the Head, a new song, Lullaby, which was anything but (it rocks!), and Psychopomp, they got the somewhat lethargic crowd going. Next was Walking Wounded, Release, another new one called Apathy, Save Me (into Led Zep’s Kashmir), Heaven Coming Down, and finally Sister Awake into Paint it Black, much to the delight of the crowd. A great set from a great band, and we got to see them the next night in Fort Erie as well.
Then it was time for the band EVERYONE came to see, TOOL. With an impressive stage setup, Maynard swayed in front of the video screen for most of the set. Opening with The Grudge, the crowd was whipped into a frenzy. Plowing right into Stinkfist, the energy continued as they took a brief pause before launching 46 & 2, Schism, Sober, Parabola and closing with Lateralus. The set seemed way too short, as everyone was mentioning that they wanted to hear almost every other song that wasn’t played! But they sounded incredible, and the stage show was a sight as well. After sitting in the parking lot for about an hour, we finally got out and slowly made our way home, didn’t get back to NT until 3:30am, which was lovely considering we had a show later that night!
The only picture I have from this show is of me and Adrienne for some reason…

06/28/2001 3 Doors Down, Seven Mary Three, Oleander (Rochester, NY @ High Falls)
By Eric | June 28, 2001 11:59 pm
We got there a little late and missed half of Oleander’s set. I’m assuming it was the same set from the Artvoice Festival the prior Sunday, we managed to catch Unwind, Benign, Why I’m Here, and Are You There.
Then Seven Mary Three came out, and put on a great show. They opened with First Time Believer, then went to the older stuff, playing Water’s Edge, Roderigo (which I yelled for, and Jason Ross was like, “You read my mind! Giti also commented on that as he was signing my stuff), Steal A Car, Lucky, Sleepwalking, My My, Peel, Breakdown, Wait, and closed with Cumbersome. They sounded really good, but seem to be the type of band that you have to see in a club. The crowd was rather lame for both opening bands, not sure if they were just unfamiliar or what. After the 7M3 set, we hung around by the buses and got autographs from the all of the 7M3 guys, and Mary managed to snag a 7M3 setlist which ended up being a little different from what they actually played. Then we wandered to the back of the concert area, and found Doug from Oleander so we got autographs from him and talked for a little bit. Not long after Ric and Scott from Oleander appeared as well, so we got to chat with them too. All the Oleander guys are really nice and down to earth!
We split and half-heartedly watched 3DD, they opened with Duck and Run, played everything off “The Better Life”, including Be Like That acoustically, and closed with Loser. They also did about 4 or 5 new/old songs, and some setlist.fm investigation would suggest we saw When I’m Gone, Dangerous Game, This Time, maybe Sarah Yellin, and one of either Dead Love or Wasted Me from the indie. They have this new 3EB-esque stainless steel stage setup with risers going up and behind the drummer, kinda overdoing it IMHO, but whatever. They sounded decent, but the show hasn’t really changed over the 4 times I’ve seen them.

06/24/2001 Artvoice Festival: Econoline Crush, Oleander (Buffalo, NY @ Chippewa St. & Delaware Rd.)
By Eric | June 24, 2001 11:59 pm
This was a freebie put on by the Buffalo independent newspaper Artvoice, and among the 30 some-odd bands and 3 stages, EC and Oleander played the main stage. Oleander went on at 4, we got there early enough to check the place out, and since the backstage area was pretty much wide open (the stage was set up in the middle of delaware rd), we wandered around the back. We ended up talking to Johnny from EC for a little bit, Sara and Adrienne got autographs from him and Mark. We headed back around front to catch Oleander, who sounded really good. Played a lot more off of February Son than we would have thought. In no particular order, they played: Come To Stay, Stupid, Down When I’m Loaded, Benign, Unwind, Why I’m Here, I Walk Alone, Lost Cause, and Are You There.
Then after a rather quick set change, Econoline came out and blasted into TDM! The guys were on as usual, and ripped through all the good stuff: X3, Sparkle and Shine, Surefire, Sinking, Trash, My Salvation, Home, Make It Right, You Don’t Know, and Wicked once again with the Head Like a Hole insert. Home seemed a little flat, but this round of Wicked/HLAH more than made up for it! We didn’t feel like sticking around this time, so right after the set we pretty much left. Both bands were excellent though, and the day was beautiful as well!
Found a video with a brief interview and some show clips!
The first 18 pics are from Sara, and the rest are from this kid Scott who posted to the EC board.

500 CDs!
By Eric | June 18, 2001 4:38 pm
Yes, the inevatible has happened, the 500 cd barrier has been broken, the CD that holds the prestegious honor is the American Version of the Matthew Good Band’s Beautiful Midnight. (Yeah, its a double., I had the Canadian one, so what?)
Toronto was a blast this weekend, Depeche Mode was pretty cool, and chillin at home sunday was fun too. Jake’s birthday / Father’s day, so dad and Jake were getting stuff. Buying for dad is easy… 2-4 of Heineken and you’re done!
This weekend is shaping up for a co-op reunion, then Amandas graduation on sunday, followed by Econoline Crush / Oleander down on Chippewa for free! 🙂

06/16/2001 Depeche Mode, Poe (Toronto, ONT @ Molson Ampitheatre)
By Eric | June 16, 2001 11:59 pm
Hung out with Carolyn all day, she graciously let us stay over at her place so we didnt have to drive back. We had lawn seats, so we were pretty far back. Poe started right at 8, and she sounded really good, much better than PJ Harvey. Angry Johnny was the only song that I knew, but her entire set was impressive, too bad I couldnt see most of it. Everyone was still filing in at that point, so we had a better time commenting on all the people walking in front of us. By the time DM came out, everyone was in. They had a hell of a light show, wasnt very involved, but the minimalist approach worked. It seemed to me that more people got into it as the night wore on. The setlist was: Intro tape: Easy Tiger – Dream On (Live Instrumental Acoustic) / The Dead Of Night / The Sweetest Condition / Halo / Walking In My Shoes / Dream On / When The Body Speaks / Waiting For The Night To Fall / The Bottom Line / Breathe / Freelove / Enjoy The Silence / I Feel You / In Your Room / It’s No Good / I Feel Loved/ Personal Jesus. Then for the Encore: Home / Clean / Black Celebration / Never Let Me Down Again. For only knowing about 6 songs, I enjoyed myself! From the DM experts Sara and Amanda, the show got a thumbs up!

entertainment is a sham
By Eric | June 5, 2001 10:58 am
The kids whose billions pay for this machine are not only fully aware it’s a sham, they embrace the cynicism and still manage to enjoy the show.
I guess the music industry is the 3rd to go down this route, where the 2nd was politics, following the lead of the professional wrestling.
Seen on Slashdot [www.slashdot.org].

Christina damages our eardrums
By Eric | June 4, 2001 1:43 pm
Christina Aguilera is suing a New York record label that plans to release an album of demos she recorded at the age of 14, before she and her navel became internationally ubiquitous. The singer claims that the release of the CD, Just Be Free, will cause “irreparable damage.” Which makes it different from all her other records exactly how?
