09/20/2003 Sevendust (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)
By Eric | September 20, 2003 11:59 pm
Sevendust decided to close out their mini acoustic tour in Rochester, and Jason, Colin, Tiff and I were there to see it. We got up into the balcony, which was great for this show due to the fact that there was no opener. Instead, the entire new Sevendust album (Seasons) was played over the PA. No visuals, no nothing. Makes me ecstatic that we were sitting comfortably upstairs instead of standing on the floor.
So after that was over, the boys came out, and rocked harder with acoustics than I’ve seen some bands rock electrics! First surprise of the night… Lajon cut his dreads off!!! Sure looked different, no doubt. They opened with Trust, and played some more of the subdued numbers off of Animosity, including Xmas Day, Beautiful, Angel’s Son, and Follow. A healthy mix of some of the new tunes (Seasons, Skeleton Song, Disgrace) and a couple of covers as well, just for fun. The best example of this was easily Purple Rain. Yes, Prince! Lajon brought out a gold microphone, and jokes about how he got it from Prince in Indianapolis. The guys attempted Eye Of The Tiger once or twice, Metallica’s Master Of Puppets, and also did (now follow this!) a cover of Johnny Cash’s cover of NIN’s Hurt. Switching back to their own stuff, they tore up the place with Rumble Fish, Black, Prayer, and then attempted Home, but LJ was in the wrong key, and tried to take it waaaaaaaayy too high, before stopping and just about falling over from laughter! During the encore, some kid got up, and LJ let him propose to his girlfriend up on stage; Oddly enough, this came right before the last song of the night, “Bitch”. Coincidence? In any event, the show was stellar, and the guys were having nothing but fun up on stage, as usual, and sent us home happy. I did manage to snag a poster off the wall as a keepsake!
Someone else’s review with a couple different details here: http://www.meniketti.com/vforum/archive/index.php/t-1311.html
“…the stage was set up real cozy with candles and little table lamps set up near the band members.”
“Comedy was the theme I think because Morgan (drums) started hitting one tom with a stick and Vinny (bass) did the bassline to the White Stripes while Clint made goofy noises pretending to sing like the White Stripes, Lajon at that point said they would offer to buy the drummer another drum so she’d have 2 LOL.”
“…another comedy moment was when Clint tried singing an Ac/Dc song and said he couldn’t understand how Brian Johnson doesn’t shit himself singing like that!”

The Short Way To Take The Long Road
By Eric | August 31, 2003 12:49 am
Like most high profile albums usually do, the new Nickelback album, The Long Road, got leaked, and…. don’t let the single fool you. This CD is harder than Silver Side Up was, and save for the last two songs (which on first listen, didn’t really grab me), is pretty damn good. Someday is kind of an oddity, but it doesn’t really stick out as much as one would think. I’m kinda peeved that the 3 bonus tracks on the digipak are songs that have already been released (Saturday Night, Yanking Out My…, Learn The Hard Way) instead of the other songs that got recorded that didn’t make it on the album (Next Contestant, Slow Motion, etc). And everyone can say whatever they want about Nickelback (too radio, blah blah…) I don’t care… I like ’em. And they’re gonna be in Utica on November 1st 🙂

08/23/2003 Theory of a Deadman, Klear (Niagara Falls, NY @ Summit Park Mall)
By Eric | August 23, 2003 11:59 pm
This was a part of the 2-day “Rock The Border” event that was put on at the mall, featuring a ton of local bands, and then national headliners. Saturday’s headliner was obviously Theory of a Deadman, who Tiff and I came to see. Most of the bands were outside, and then the main acts were inside the old Jenss department store. Pretty weird setup, but it worked out alright. We got there just as the band before Klear was finishing up, and then Klear did their set. They sounded better than they did at Edgefest, and everyone was generally into them. After their half-hour, Theory was up. Adrienne had finished work at the mall, and came in and joined us. The set was primarily the same as the Showplace show, with the order switched up a bit. They sounded just as good, and I’m sure they were relieved to have more people this time! The security for the show left a little to be desired, as there was no barrier, so they had their backs to the stage in front of us. Not a problem if they’d stand reasonably still, but no, they had to turn and talk to each other, and just get in our way. Plus one of them was drinking a beer! So the venue and organization left a little to be desired, but Theory’s performance did not, and we had a great time seeing them again!

street teaming!
By Eric | July 11, 2003 12:42 am
From a rock/metal parody page on Roadrunner’s page… really funny if you’ve ever done street team stuff, even funnier if you know who most of the bands are… 🙂
Nation Rocked by Turf Wars Among Street Teams
A bit too much of it hit close to home… where do you think I get all them stickers from? 🙂

Illegal Downloading of Internet Tracks Boosting Sales of Albums
Well DUH!! And the biggest thing that the record companies seem to forget that if they would LOWER THEIR PRICES to a more reasonable level, they’d more than make it up on volume. And the article is absoultely right, the singles market would dry up, and with good reason. Who’s gonna pay $5 for two songs? That’s just stupid. (Don’t get me started on the imports market, that’s another rant for another time).
Anyway, last night I went out shopping with Mom for Matt and Lisa’s wedding gift, and then I went out with Danielle and Adrienne, and let me tell ya, Chippewa is DEAD on Wednesday nights. Hot Damn. The Crocodile Bar had bike night or something, all I know is I got two free BBQ sandwiches out of the deal. Other than that it was kinda bunk, so we headed to Wild Wings, and closed that place down… at 1. They close at 1!!! All the better for getting to sleep at a decent hour.

just because I want to
By Eric | July 9, 2003 1:24 am
Two more tidbits before bed:
1. Britney (FINALLY!) admits that she let Justin hit it… – DUH! Who did she think she was fooling?
2. Spike Lee drops his suit against TNN/SpikeTV – I’m changing my name to “Word”(tm), and then I’m gonna sue anyone that uses any type of “Word”(tm) for fun and profit.
That’s all folks.

Theory Rocked!
By Eric | July 2, 2003 12:57 am
I’m back from the show tonight (well, after being on the phone with Tiff and taking a shower!)… as always, the review is forthcoming, but suffice to say that all 3 bands were great, despite there only being 50 people (at most!) in the place… Theory of a Deadman was of course excellent, and I got my souviniers like always (signed cd cover and setlist, and a couple picks!). But both 40 Foot Echo and 3 Days Grace rocked it pretty hard as well. Adrienne and Danielle enjoyed themselves, and I think were more into the openers!
Sleepy time round these parts, gotta wash the garage with the new powerwasher to make it squeaky clean for all those attending on saturday!

07/01/2003 Theory of a Deadman, Three Days Grace, Forty Foot Echo (Buffalo, NY @ Showplace Theater)
By Eric | July 1, 2003 11:59 pm
Adrienne and Danielle accompanied me to this show. We got there at the supposed doors opening time at 7. Hah! 7:30 we made it into the place, and sat around for about an hour till they started. And we literally sat around, in the few seats, because there wasn’t more than 30 people there at that time, and I think its a safe bet that there was only 50 by show’s end. No matter, it was like a personal concert for us! Before the show started I had gotten Tim’s (the drummer) and Tyler’s (lead singer) autographs on the Theory CD cover, so I was 2 for 4 before it even started! So Forty Foot Echo was up first, and they’re a Default-ish kinda band, they had a couple slower songs, but a couple rockin ones too. Not too bad for an opener. Three Days Grace were up next, and before they were, we got approached by some kids on their street team to pose for a picture with the postcards and stickers, so they get credit for the show. So maybe we’ll end up on their site somewhere 🙂 They were much harder, and sounded good as well. The guitar player has a wicked mohawk too 🙂 They also got about a half hour to play, and it was a pleasant surprise that both openers were as good as they were. Then it was time for Theory! Opening with Invisible Man into What You Deserve, they came out rockin. They also commented on only the die-hards coming out, and the fact that 3 Canadian bands were playing in Buffalo on Canada Day. Next up were Confession, Nothing Could Come Between Us, Say I’m Sorry, Point To Prove, Last Song, and then a “new” one, Inside, which according to David (guitarist) is another b-side from the album sessions that hasn’t seen release yet. After this was Any Other Way, a cover of the Allman Brothers’ Midnight Rider, and then the NCCBU b-side (and my new personal favorite!), Above This. They skipped the encore schtick since there was hardly anyone there, and dove right into Make Up Your Mind. After this song, these three girls in the front promptly left, leaving a gaping hole at the barrier. In talking to David afterwards, he mentioned that he could tell that that’s what they were waiting for, and looked bored the rest of the time. Ouch! Why be in front and look bored, especially when there’s NO ONE ELSE THERE and they can see you?! In any event, they closed with Leg To Stand On, and after the set, came down and greeted everyone that was there (all 50 of us), and signed stuff. The guys in the other two bands were most gracious in signing stuff as well. So it was a nice small show with a non-existant crowd that made enough noise for everyone else 🙂

Currently Listening To…
By Eric | June 30, 2003 1:43 pm
the sound of my butt firmly planted in this chair…
But seriously, in the ever-relentless pursuit of doing less typing, I found a neat winamp plugin (and javascript) that will automatically update the webpage with whatever I’m listening to at the moment (providing CDDB and the ID3 tags all say what they’re supposed to!). BlogAmp is the neat little thing thats allowing me to do this. I played with putting the script in the moveable type template header, and then having the script called from each individual post, but that doesn’t seem to want to work quite yet… something else to play with 🙂
Now all of you can make fun of me for what I’m listening to at any given moment. In addition, I found out that if I’m not listening to anything in winamp, it displays whatever the last song played was. So now you can also see what song is driving me absolutely nuts because it’s the last thing I heard!
