12/03/2003 Zebrahead, Lucky Boys Confusion, Plain White T’s, Supergarage (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)

By Eric | December 3, 2003 11:59 pm

I drove back to Rochester for the day to see this show with Tiff, as Lucky Boys is one of her favorite bands. The tickets said doors at 6, so we got there about 6:15, only to still wait in line for a bit. Since this was on the club side (the smaller side), we got to wait indoors. Plus, a grand total of about 75 people showed up. If it was on the big side, the place would have looked completely empty. So as we’re milling around, Tiff spots the bass player from LBC, and gets an autograph and chats for a minute or two with him. Supergarage started around 7, and asked if anyone knew who they were. Of course not! They’re from Toronto, and I think they won some contest on Edge 102 a while back, Battle of the Bands or something. They were decent, nothing great, but not intolerable either. Standard rock/punk fare. They mentioned they came with nothing but weed, and appeared to use the Plain White T’s gear. Not sure. Anyway, the Plain White T’s were indeed next, and we had seen them once before, opening for Saves the Day at Showplace. They were pretty good as pop/punk goes, and seemed to have a couple fans there that knew the words. Then it was time for LBC. They didn’t disappoint at all, as the show sounded great, and the guys had a lot of energy. Opening with Champions, and then right into Breaking Rules, the guys seemed surprised that there were a good 10-15 of us that knew the songs and were rocking out. Atari, Fred Astaire and Blame were next, with the intensity level continuing to be high… Bossman, Closer, and Broken continued the pace, and because they ended up being a little pressed for time, Sunday Afternoon didn’t get played, even though it was on the setlist. The new single, Hey Driver, was paired up with 3-10 (CB’s Caddy Pt 3) for the finale. The little room at Water Street sounded great, and even though the crowd was small, the LBC guys didn’t seem deterred by that at all. After their set, we collected autographs from the rest of the guys, and Tiff got a couple pictures as well. We stuck around for 3 of Zebrahead’s songs, weren’t impressed in the least, and took off. I thought there would have been at least a couple more people in attendance, but hey, small and intimate is never bad, right?

No More Doubledrive :(

By Eric | November 27, 2003 1:07 pm

Hello friends and fans of the band.

It’s been 6 years since the first spark that eventually lead to the creation of doubleDrive. Donnie, Josh, Mike and I have ridden the roller coaster of ups and downs that forged the great friendships and many songs between us that I am very proud to have been a part of. We have, however, decided that all good things must come to an end. Our last show will be in Atlanta, GA at the Cotton Club on November 28th, the day after Thanksgiving. We hope that you realize this was not an easy decision for any of us to make. It’s not easy to come together as brothers and put an end to something that you have put so much into and loved so much. Donnie has worked very hard to get a street team site started and we are disappointed that we won’t have the chance to use it.
Thanks to all of you for your support at our shows and for sticking with us through our down times. We have been fortunate to have met some wonderful people in the music industry that have gone out of their way to bring this band’s music to the listeners and we would like to thank you. This having been said, I don’t believe this is the end for any of us as far as music is concerned, and we will each be looking forward to seeing all of you again. If you have the ways and means to get down to the Atlanta show, we would like to see you there.
Please keep checking back for updates about what the band members are up to, as well as news about some other things that are in the works.

I wish I could have seen them more than once… but I’m sure they’ll be better off doing their own thing, as they never could seem to crack the mainstream market and get some notice. Ah well, I have my albums and the one show I did see, and it was great while it lasted!

11/25/2003 Fuel, Revis, Sloth (Albany, NY @ Northern Lights)

By Eric | November 25, 2003 11:59 pm

After putting in a day’s work at the NY Lottery office in Schenectady, I drove the 15 minutes over to Clifton Park to partake in a show that I should have seen two weeks before… Fuel! They were supposed to play at the Landmark in Syracuse, and I had 4th row. Ah well, this was a better place to see them anyway… much smaller! Northern Lights is not that big of a place, in fact Water Street is bigger, and the stage is about the same distance away. The first band on, Sloth, was nothing to write home about. The riffs were ordinary, the lyrics were bunk, and the band looked like a mish-mosh of styles. Anyway, Revis was up next, and while I enjoyed their set, having the CD and all, I thought they could have been better. They played pretty much everything off of Places For Breathing, plus a new untitled song, and looked rather ho-hum doing it. I think the crowd sensed this as well, as there weren’t a whole lot of people moving around. Technically, the band sounded fine, but the singer had a bit of trouble hitting some of the notes, and was the only one really getting into his performance. Its too bad, because I wanted to enjoy them, but really found it difficult to. After a set change, the mood was picked up in a major way when Fuel came out… definately NOT lackluster! Opening with Last Time, and right into Jesus Or A Gun, the Fuel boys haven’t lost it in terms of the live show at all. They rocked just as hard as they had on the last two tours, and then some! Won’t Back Down was next, then the first super-singalong, Innocent, with the Pink Floyd “Comfortably Numb” intro. The guys really seemed to be enjoying themselves, as Scar, Untitled, Million Miles, and Down Inside Of You were next. It never fails, however, that there’s a fight at a Fuel show, for whatever reason. At least this time, I wasn’t involved! Short of that, the crowd was into the show, but not really into being idiots, which was nice for a change. Sunburn with the extended intro was next, Falls On Me and Shimmer after that, then back to the rockin with Down, Prove, and Empty Spaces. Hemorrhage closed out the main set, which left most of us satisfied. Naturally, there were two more, and after playing Quarter, closed it up with Bittersweet. My only complaint was no Ozone, but thats minor. The show was incredible, they sounded great, the crowd was decent, the venue was cool, and much better than sitting in seats in the Landmark, no matter how close!

Perfectly Circular

By Eric | November 21, 2003 11:05 am

I’m in Rochester for the time being, Tiff’s got one more final today and then we’re off to Horseheads to visit her parents for the weekend.

Knock Knock.
Who’s There?
Little Boy Blue.
Little Boy Blue Who?
Michael Jackson.

Thanks Maynard! He was ripping on MJ all night long… in any event, as always, the review will be coming shortly, but for my own recollection purposes, as well as for anyone that’s interested, the setlist last night was as follows: vanishing, pet, the hollow, magdelena, weak and powerless, rose, blue, thomas, the package, 3 libras, the nurse who loved me, gravity, the outsider, the noose, judith. No encore, but none needed. They sounded great! Year of the Rabbit wasn’t half bad either… considering the other band that had been opening, The Icarus Line got terrible reviews. More on this later!

11/20/2003 A Perfect Circle, Year of the Rabbit (Syracuse, NY @ The OnCenter)

By Eric | November 20, 2003 11:59 pm

Tiff scored a third row ticket on the floor for me, so that was happy from the get-go. Year of the Rabbit wasn’t half bad, the band was put together by Ken Andrews, who originally was in Failure, who were a decent band. These guys were alright, although to me they sounded just like all the other “rock” bands that are out now, nothing really stood out. Anyway, they were done in a half hour, so the wait wasn’t agonizing. Then it was APC time! They came out and started with Vanishing, then into Pet, The Hollow, Magdelena, and Weak and Powerless. Maynard was ripping Michael Jackson jokes all night, and James Iha tried his hand at cracking jokes, which were completely terrible (on purpose of course!). Continuing with Rose, Blue was next, and this is one of the songs they’d been alternating with Orestes. Why can’t they play both? Beyond me, but Blue was awesome anyway. Thomas, The Package, and 3 Libras were next, followed by a heavier version of The Nurse Who Loved Me, Gravity, The Outsider, The Noose, and the closer was Judith. No encore for this show (and the whole tour as well). They sounded awesome, Maynard of course was brilliant as usual, and stationary as usual. Josh and James were on platforms on either side of Maynard, who had his own platform in the center of the stage. Billy and Jeordie were on the stage level, and were the only ones that moved at all. An interesting stage setup, but it certainly worked for them, and for the sound. The OnCenter isn’t what I would call full either, I’m really surprised they played there and not at the Landmark, but who’s to say. Still a great show!

Someone on YouTube posted the FULL SET. 1 hour and 17 minutes of APC goodness!

Nothing In The Tank

By Eric | November 10, 2003 10:48 pm

No Fuel that is… they (not really sure who “they” is) cancelled the Fuel / Revis show at the Landmark Theater in Syracuse that was supposed to be on Wednesday. This is now the 2nd time that I’ve had a fuel show cancelled on me, the first being back in 99, they were supposed to play at Water Street, and again I had tickets in my hand, and they backed out. The reasons being thrown around for the cancellation on the fuel message boards were a phantom “scheduling conflict”, or supposedly the venue was saying it was slow ticket sales. Either way, its still shady. My conspiracy theory? Revis got really pissed off and sabotaged the show because Ticketmaster spelled their band name wrong on the ticket… 🙂

So other than that, its been a slow day in Vernon, I did a little grocery shopping, and not much else. Looking forward to actually doing something work-wise on Wednesday! The paid vacation has been nice, but I’m ready to work again.

11/01/2003 Nickelback, Trapt, Three Days Grace (Utica, NY @ Utica Memorial Auditorium)

By Eric | November 1, 2003 11:59 pm

Tiff and I found some seats in the upper middle section, with a great view of the stage, as we weren’t going to chance anything with her finger still splinted from her stitches. Three Days Grace was up first, and I didn’t think they were quite as impressive as when I saw them at Showplace in July. Maybe being on a bigger stage, maybe not being as close, but while they rocked out, it was just kinda blah. Predictably, everyone went nuts for I Hate Everything About You, but for the rest of the set there were only pockets of people doing any moving. After a fairly quick setchange, Trapt came out, and they sounded much better than at Edgefest in May. It was hard to hear the guitar for the first song or two, but they eventually got it evened out. They seemed to have more energy than the last time I saw them as well, and they even brought it down to acoustics for Stories. They opened with Still Frame, and also played These Walls, Echo, The Game, Hollowman, Made of Glass, and closed with Headstrong, which the place went nuts for. I still wouldn’t call them “amazing” live, but they were much better than I had previously thought. So after another setchange, it was Nickelback time! They came out guns blazing with pyro and smoke and opened with Flat on the Floor. Next was Breathe, and then Someday right away, with their guitar tech Timmy sitting in on the acoustic guitar. Rather interesting, but I figure the upper range in the song is higher than most, so they make sure Chad can hit it by playing it early. Chad also commented on all the smoke by saying his smoke bombs as a kid smelled just like that 🙂 Do This Anymore was next, followed by Where Do I Hide, during which they did the traditional “flim the audience” thing. Chad made a poor guitar toss to Timmy, and clipped him in the head! Timmy was the butt of jokes for the rest of the night, as Chad was campaigning for a lovely nurse from the crowd to take care of him hehe. Leader of Men was next, followed by Figured You Out and Woke Up This Morning. Acoustic time, as quotes from Spider-Man were played over the PA as the guys broke into Hero, and stayed acoustic for Should’ve Listened. Plugged back in, Because of You was next, followed by Too Bad, Feeling Way Too Damn Good, and then closing the main set was Never Again. The lights went out for the encore, and when they came back, Ryan didn’t have a guitar, and Chad was saying that anyone that had a camera had better get them ready, because what we were going to see was a rare occasion… Ryan doing lead vocals on a cover of Soul Coughing’s Super Bon Bon!!! It rocked too, and he uncannily sounded like Mike Doughty… they had a hell of a good time doing that one, and most of the crowd responded favorably as well. After an invitation to sing, the closer was none other than How You Remind Me. They had a lot of pyro, and it was well timed and LOUD. A fun time though, and the Nickelback boys didn’t disappoint!

Serves You Right?!

Woman breaks both her legs protesting loud music
Associated Press

10/20/2003 — RIDGEFIELD, Wash. — Toni Lynn Lycan, 44, got so mad about the music blasting from the apartment downstairs that she jumped up and down as hard as she could – and broke both her legs, according to police in Ridgefield.
The injury was discovered when officers were sent to the Carriage House Apartments on Thursday afternoon, Police Chief Bruce Hall told The Columbian newspaper in Vancouver.

Lycan yelled at her downstairs neighbor, Allen Haines, 27, to turn down his music. Haines then grabbed a broom and banged the handle on his ceiling.

That infuriated Lycan, so she jumped up in the air and slammed both feet on the floor, hard enough to break both her legs about 4 inches below the kneecap, Hall said.

Moral of the story? If it’s too loud, you’ll hurt yourself complaining about it… just let it go! 🙂

10/22/2003 Seether, Shinedown, Tony C. and the Truth (Syracuse, NY @ Bridge Street Music Hall)

By Eric | October 22, 2003 11:59 pm

My first trip to the Bridge Street Music Hall, and its a pretty nice place. Definately made for music, with a spacious stage and while the room itself isn’t huge (its on the order of a Water Street), there’s plenty of room and it sounded good. The first band on, Tony C. and the Truth, were a bluesy type band with a DJ, and an MC that sounded much like Everlast. They were quite good, and had the crowd interested through their entire set. Shinedown was up next, and for never having seen them before, I was impressed. (I guess Seether picks good openers! See the 02/15 Ra and Seether review) I only knew the single (Fly From The Inside), but the rest of the songs were pretty cool, hard, except for what I guess is gonna be the next single, a haunting song called “45”. The singer’s stage prescence was awesome, he reminded me of a mix between Sebastian Bach from Skid Row and the WWE’s Edge, which worked well. His voice on the other hand, when not screaming (much like Sebastian Bach interestingly enough!) sounded a lot like Jimmy Newquist of Caroline’s Spine, which is not a bad thing! There were quite a few people there for Shinedown that knew all the stuff, so that always helps the band out. After this, Seether came out, and ran through a similar set to the Penny Arcade show, including Hang On and Burrito, and they played Sympathetic this time, as well as the Nirvana cover of You Know You’re Right, (and didn’t play Pig or Fade Away) and again closing with Broken acoustically. I managed to snag a drumstick, and got my CD cover signed by all of the guys after the show. A fun night and a great show!
