Cliff died, and you weren’t even born yet!
By Eric | October 29, 2002 1:36 am
So this morning I woke up to Joe coming home, he stayed over one more night at home, feeling a little under the weather… poked around the house, had the usual 11am breakfast date with Scott and Bob Barker hehe… threw together our Tech Transfer paper with Joe, and at 2 we were out the door for class… Tech Transfer was alright, and then Politics was a blah class… talking about the shift in politics in cities to what is now “urban politics”. Blah. Hit the mall for food and did a little grocery shopping with Tiff after class, and then chilled for a bit until 8 when Karl came over, we picked up our pizza and watched the football game… a hard-fought Eagles win over the Giants… caught a bit of a VH1 show about obsessed fans (I’ll get into that in a second) and then watched the first half of Conan…. as soon as I’m done with this its bedtime… 🙂
Ok, a little rant about this VH1 show… I’m not sure what it was called, but the segment was about these two girls that became insane Cliff Burton fans…. for those that don’t know, Cliff was the orignal bass player for Metallica, who died in a bus crash in 1986… First off, these girls were talking about Cliff like they knew him personally, how he helped them through all their rough times, and how they feel he’s “still alive within them”. These girls aren’t a day over 17, making them 1, 2, 3 years old at the most when Cliff died. How traumatized can you really be? It’s like me being devastated that Stevie Ray Vaughan is dead.. I love his music, but I was 10 when he died.. meaning I had no idea whatsoever!!! Now people will say that I put a lot of stock into my music also, and I do, maybe too much sometimes, but regardless, my world is not devastated by the loss of a member of a band before I even knew they existed. I’m a huge Alice in Chains fan, but did I slit my wrists when Layne Staley died? Of course not! Why then are these girls on the verge of dying due to a death that happened 16 years ago?? To me, this segment was even worse than all the kids that jumped on the “let’s mourn Kurt Cobain” bandwagon in 1994 when he blew his head off… at least we were alive and hearing his music when that happened. I still think 99% of the kids were latching onto thin air with that one, but it made a shred more sense than this one with Cliff Burton did. Ugh. I guess my pet peeve is these kids that don’t take this music for what it is, entertainment that strikes an emotional nerve, rather than seeing it as their whole life, and that they must live and die by these people and bands.Again, I realize that I sound somewhat hypocritical saying that, what with how much I get into my music and bands, but I’d like to think I know when to step away and take it at face value. Its this separation between real life and entertainment that I think a lot of kids today don’t make, and it’s leading to a whole host of bigger problems…
Ok, soapbox is over… discuss amongst yourselves… I’m getting verklempt!!

my Cochise is leaking
By Eric | October 25, 2002 5:16 pm
Actually got up and made it to work hehe… Work was freakin hectic today! Our Friday mornings are usually low-key.. I dunno what the hell happened this morning, or last night, but there were jobs sorta not done, jobs that got done but the tickets werent filled out, phantom jobs that kept popping up…. grrrr. But that was only till about 9:30… the last hour and a half was perfectly fine… Headed over to the Stat lab to chill with Tiffany for a half hour till she got done with her shift, then to the Crossroads for lunch… after lunch I headed home, found one new Audioslave song (Set It Off), got the Cochise video…. and found out that the real album got leaked… IF ANYONE HAS THIS YOU BETTER NOT BE HOLDING OUT ON ME!!!!! heheh… So after that excitement, it was off to get a haircut, hit some thrift stores, find Matt a present, etc. Came back and cleaned up a little, did laundry, took a shower (to get all that itchy hair off my neck!) and now its just about dinner time… mmmm dinner… Tonight brings the hockey game, then Matt’s birthday party at Genny Park! Both promise to be a rockin good time!

unity among slaves

from Pimprock:
Unity Among Slaves – wookubus
(6:48 PM PST 10/14/2002)
Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello recently took the time to comment to Launch on the bands early false start, here’s what he had to say:
“Well, there was a tremendous amount of drama and unnecessary conflict, which was generated by our managerial situation, Timmy and Brad and I had a management company, and Chris had a separate manager, and there was not enough room in the picture for both of them, and it created an enormous amount of conflict, which for a while undermined the band’s solidarity.”
The band eventually aligned themselves with a neutral third party management company which cleared up the rift, leading to their current situation which Morello also discussed, saying:
“We couldn’t be more united, a great deal of love and respect for each other, which we’ve had even during the Ozzfest period, and so (we) are united in our rock power and looking forward to taking it to the masses.”
Audioslave will release their self-titled Epic debut on November 19th.

Guilty Pleasures
By Eric | October 13, 2002 4:57 pm
Okay, this idea is a direct rip-off of the VH1 show I’m watching called Guilty Pleasures… theyre going over the top 20 or so songs that, as they put it, are buried at the proverbial back of your music collection, that you bust out when no one else is around and scream at the top of your lungs, yet you’re probably embarrased beyond belief to admit you own, let alone know! So anyway, I wanna see a ton of comments in here hearing about everyone else’s guilty pleasure songs, and why…. so here’s mine, and everyone thinks that its the early 90’s middle-school rap/R&B stuff, nah, thats not quite guilty, I really do get a kick out of that stuff hehe… nope, its really:
Matchbox20… Both albums. All signs point to, “Why the hell do you have those cds???” Cuz its whiny and sappy and singable and, well, yeah… boohoohoo heheh..
So lets hear everyone elses!!!! I don’t want anyone punking out on this either… ain’t nobody too proud for this 🙂

what building number is that again?
By Eric | October 12, 2002 2:51 pm
So yes, the full-on Friday recap! Work indeed came too early, thankfully there weren’t any 8:00 jobs 🙂 Poked around at work, visited Tiffany working in the Stat lab in Bldg 8 for a bit, finished out the work shift, and then headed over to 113. Kelley, Joe and I walked over to 9 to get Karl, John, Scott, and Samantha, and then we hit the Ritz for lunch… only to meet Matt down there! So that was fun, we walked back, and headed out on the town. Best Buy was first, then Karl set up his new cell phone at Verizon, and finally… Beers of the World 🙂 Walked around, perused, and of all things, me and Karl decided to go ghetto style and get 40’s…. and only the ghetto brand too.. St. Ides! So that’s chillin in the fridge right now 🙂 Came back, poked around for awhile, then I picked up Jason and his roommate Colin, brought them back, and walked to the Gym for the show. The review will be up later, but for the quick synopsis: Greenwheel: awesome, didn’t play nearly long enough; Blindside: these guys suck… I was outside for most of them, collecting autographs from the Greenwheel guys; Hoobastank: Much better than I thought they’d be, they sounded good, lotsa energy, made it worth the $10. And we didnt get our ticket stubs back! I HATE THAT! Seeing that I managed to snag a setlist (with Kelley’s help, thanks!), I wasnt as broken up about it as I could have been. The CAB office did put out whatever leftover posters and stickers they had, so I finally got a Greenwheel poster and a couple stickers…
Dropped off the UR boys back at their place, and headed over to Rustic Village to hang out with Tiffany (after figuring out on my own what the building number REALLY was!)… Watched TV, figured out they really get more channels than they thought they did, and made MTV magically appear… and got fed brownies hehe. Got home way too late, and then got up way too early to do the run with Dan, Tobi and Jason…. Finally replaced my missing Disturbed CD, The Sickness finally has a home in the collection, and unwittingly became CD #600 🙂 Hit Brandini’s Pizza for a little bite to eat…. and now I’m kinda in a holding pattern waiting for the parents to show up… I get to go to Dino! yay!
Current mood: just chillin
song: Disturbed – Conflict

A greenwheel setlist! Signed! The rest of the show was pretty good as well, and I had a fun night afterwards hanging out with Tiffany… I’m getting dragged out the door currently, so the rest of the details will be forthcoming 🙂

10/11/2002 Hoobastank, Blindside, Greenwheel (Rochester, NY @ RIT Clark Gym)
By Eric | October 11, 2002 11:59 pm
We got to the gym about 7, and were about 2 people deep when Greenwheel came out. Yep, this kid can still sing 🙂 They opened with Identity, and then into Shelter, and Louder Than Words… There were actually a couple people that had the album and knew the words up at the front with us, so that was cool, has to make them feel good that they have at least a couple fans 🙂 Next up were two songs that aren’t on the album, Everything and Flood, both of which sounded really good and could have been on the album… Then came Breathe, which was a bit different than the album version, slower on the slow parts, but harder on the heavy parts, it was pretty cool! Dim Halo was next, my favorite, and it didn’t disappoint. The last song was Strong, and he nailed the note at the end! They were really impressive… So their set ends, and I start yelling to one of the “security guards”, campus safety morons, if I could snag the setlist. Blank Stare. I KNOW YOU CAN HEAR ME JACKASS!!! Kelley swings up because she knows one of the other guards, and he’s like, we cant get the list. Sure, so I start yelling for the roadie, who rips it, and points to one of the girls in front of me…. I’m like, I was asking for that way before anyone else did!! And I got it… mission accomplished! So in-between sets we wandered over to the merch table, and we got autographs and talked to the guys in greenwheel, who were all fairly cool and friendly. Blindside was up next… I think we made it through a song and a half, and then walked outside… they were awful… the mp3’s I had downloaded were bad enough, we thought maybe they’d be better live, but no such luck. So we didn’t watch too much of them. Back inside and sitting on the bleachers for Hoobastank, and they were much better than I thought they’d be. They had a hell of a lot of energy, and the lead singer kept profusely thanking the crowd hehe. From what Rachel said, they played everything off the album and a couple off of their indie record as well. Someone had a football that made it up on stage, so the lead singer tried to pass it to his merch guy all the way at the back of the gym… the first time he made it as far as the soundboard, and the 2nd time he got it a bit further. Fun stuff! They didn’t play an encore, Crawling in the Dark was 2nd to last, and the last song they played was even more upbeat than that. For once, an RIT show worth going to, and worth the $10 for the ticket!

Soulflying
By Eric | October 11, 2002 1:34 am
Thursday… yeah, well, the morning went a little rough, endured another totally blah needs assessment class, and then off to work…. Network Programming was worthwhile this time around (yay TCP!) and then… back to work! I got out a bit early, Jordan came and picked me up, and it was off to SOULFLY!!! There were 3 opening bands! Hometown boys Stemm were one of them…. anyway, the review will most likely be up tomorrow, but the show was awesome, Max is awesome, and getting some of that pent-up anger out was a really good thing 🙂 Came back and had a couple beers with Joe and Scott, and now I’m typing this when I should be sleeping… because work comes too early at 7:30 tomorrow…. I have no idea what Im doing during the day, but the Hoobastank/Greenwheel show is at 8, and who knows after that, the slate is clean so far… and I really should be getting to bed now eh? 🙂

10/10/2002 Soulfly, North Side Kings, Stemm, Mower (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)
By Eric | October 10, 2002 11:59 pm
Finally! After being shut out every other time Soulfly came around, I finally got to see Max and the boys, and the wait was worth it! But we had three other bands to wait through first. Mower was from San Diego, and they were a weird mix of hardcore, punk, and sorta metal… but they weren’t all that great. You know we’ve sunk to a new low when ya gotta start covering ICP. Stemm was next, the boys from Niagara Falls, and they were alright, but I wasn’t quite feeling it. Next up, The North Side Kings were sorta hardcore, but not extreme. Some of the songs were actually kinda funny, as in the one song was about “Eating Food With Your Friends”… and these guys were rather large individuals!
Then it was time for Soulfly… I actually ended up 3 deep from the front, dead center! They opened with Downstroy, and the place just went nuts… and stayed that way for pretty much the whole show. Seek N Strike was next, then the first of a couple of Sepultura songs with Roots Bloody Roots. They also played Jumpdafuckup/Bring It, Last of the Mohicans, Call To Arms (with the singer from North Side Kings), Brasil, then more Sepultura with Refuse/Resist, Arise, and Dead Embryonic Cells. Next was Fire (which had a wicked total-drum solo at the end, with all the Soulfly guys, plus the drummer and bassist from the North Side Kings), and they ended the main set with Back To The Primitive, and everyone was literally screaming for more… so back out they came, launching into No (“No more muthafuckin Hootie and the Blowfish!!”) and closing the night out with an incredible take on Eye For An Eye. I think I lost 20 pounds just sweating at this show… and it was worth it! The wait was long, and the rewards were great, what a show.
