10/10/2014 Theory of a Deadman, Fozzy (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)

By Eric | October 11, 2014 2:55 pm

[3 Pill Morning also on the bill, missed them.]

This was the same night as the Amerks home opener, so I wandered out of the game around the middle of the 3rd period and shot over to Water Street. Ended up missing all but 3 of Fozzy’s songs, but what I heard was pretty good. Same deal as seeing them open for Buckcherry earlier in the year, I feel like I should like them more than I actually do. I’ve heard them described as modern-day hair metal, and that’s pretty apt. not bad, just not great.

Then a bit of an extended wait for Theory to come out, but once they did, they got down to business. I liked this setlist a bit better than the show from two years ago, mainly because of the handful of new songs they played. Savages, Drown, Blow, and even the slower Angel weren’t too bad at all, they’re still playing Nothing Could Come Between Us, and we got a different cover than usual (Interstate Love Song). Even Bad Girfriend was still fun after the billionth time hearing it. A lot of diehards in the crowd singing along to everything, and the band sounded good. Tyler’s voice sounded a bit stronger than it had in previous shows. This being the 10th time seeing Theory, I know what to expect, but it’s still a good time!

Fozzy setlist:
[walked in late after Amerks game]
Lights Go Out
Enemy
Bad Tattoo

TOAD Setlist:
So Happy
Lowlife
Bitch Came Back
Savages
All or Nothing
Nothing Could Come Between Us
Hurricane
Interstate Love Song (Stone Temple Pilots cover)
Angel
No Surprise
Blow
Not Meant to Be
Santa Monica
Hate My Life

Encore:
Drown
Paradise City (Guns N’ Roses cover)
Bad Girlfriend

10/08/2014 Soulfly, Million Miles From Broadway, Before The Foundation (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)

By Eric | October 11, 2014 2:42 pm

It had been 9 years since the last time I saw Soulfly, and 12 years almost to the day since the first (and only other) time I’d seen them, at Water Street no less. So I didn’t have any real expectations since it had been so long, and I further wondered about the show since roughly a week before, they made it free and I got a refund. I was pleasantly surprised to see how full the place was, so people obviously got the message. Didn’t really see Before The Foundation any, but Million Miles From Broadway were pretty good. They’re a local Rochester band, and one of the guitar players used to play in Hate Machine.

I meandered my way up front for Soulfly, and proceeded to have a great time. The setlist had a great mix over the entire catalog, the band was into it, Max was screaming his head off all night, and the crowd was good people too. No idiots, the moshers picked each other up, everyone that was there seemed to be pretty diehard. Not much to pick apart on this one, just a fun night of metal!

Setlist:
Blood Fire War Hate
Carved Inside
Bloodshed
Cannibal Holocaust
Prophecy
Back to the Primitive
Living Sacrifice
Master of Savagery
Tribe
Frontlines
We Gotta Know (Cro-Mags cover)
Porrada
Rise of the Fallen
No
Life (Napalm Death cover)
Encore:
Jumpdafuckup / Eye for an Eye

Prophecy

Back To The Primitve

Living Sacrifice

Seek n Strike

Rise of the Fallen

Jumpdafuckup / Eye For An Eye

Review:

The 2nd Ian Thornley disc is a bit different than Come Again, which was more of a straight-ahead rocker to me. This one is a bit more nuanced, it’s hard to explain, it just feels… different.

Review:

After a 10 year wait, the Tea Party are back, and this album is a breath of fresh air after Seven Circles. They’re back to sounding like themselves for the most part, and beyond the cover of Daniel Lanois’ The Maker, everything else on here is pretty solid.
