09/04/2019 Cold, Awake For Days, University Drive (Buffalo, NY @ Buffalo Iron Works)

By Eric | September 6, 2019 9:23 am

After a long hiatus for the band, and a 9+ year gap for me between shows, I finally got to see Cold again! Fittingly, this was show number 13, and in an incredible fact I discovered while reminiscing, including this show I’d never seen the band in the same venue twice! Thirteen different venues. Kind of amazing,

Which is a good way to describe this show as well. It was pretty cool to see that the band still has a following after all these years, and equally cool to see the age spread. There were quite a few younger people in the crowd, meaning there’s still some discovery going on, and the hype for the just-about-to-be-released new album was working. Plenty of us old people there too, but a bit of a lack of older shirts. No matter, as per usual I got to talking with people about which shows we’d seen the band at and swapping stories. Always a good time.

After University Drive (all the way from Italy!) had their time, everyone migrated to the front for Cold. Scooter has put together a brand new band, including guitar player Nick Coyle, who was the front man for Lifer (whom I saw open for Cold at Water Street back in 2001!) and in a surprise, Sam was drumming! He had not been a part of the recording process and apparently was a last minute addition to the touring lineup. I was glad to see him though! They came out on stage and started all the way back at the beginning… Everyone’s A Devil off the Grundig album! It was sort of a sign of things to come, as they played a lot of back catalog (It’s All Good, Ocean, The Break), although the hits got their due as well. As for my favorites, they played Remedy, Suffocate, Confession (still my all-time favorite) and Give. We got three new songs (Without You, Snowblind, Shine), and interestingly the closer was Feel It In Your Heart. The show was fantastic, the crowd was great and singing along to everything, the band was super dialed in and interacting with everyone, especially Scooter. It was everything I wanted from this show after not seeing them for nine years, and it conjured up a lot of good memories of seeing Cold over the last 20 years!

Welcome to the next level… @coldmusic in Buffalo at @buffaloironworks last night. It was my 13th (!) time seeing the band, the first time in nine years, and inexplicably never at the same venue twice! Just as good as they always were, and had just as much fun as I always did! @nickcoyleofficial @lindsaymanfredi @jonnova @sam.mccandless #coldarmy #cold #brokenhumantour2019 #buffalo #concertpics

08/25/2019 Slipknot, Volbeat (Darien, NY @ Darien Lake Performing Arts Center)

By Eric | August 26, 2019 4:35 pm

My ticket was fairly close up, not pit but close to it, however I ended up drifting back a couple rows and off to the far left to hang with Kiersten, Pete, and their friend Nick. Had a much better time this way! Especially considering I missed Gojira and Behemoth, and got there in time for Volbeat, whom I’m still not terribly high on. I wasn’t that impressed when I saw them open for Metallica a decade prior, and while I find the radio singles okay, I didn’t think they were all that great this time either. They aren’t bad, they sounded fine, they just don’t do anything for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The almighty @slipknot last night at Darien Lake. #slipknot #knotfest #darienlake #concertpics

Now, Slipknot on the other hand, have put on a great show every time I’ve seen them. This was my 5th ‘Knot show, and was just as great as the previous four. They came out of the gate on fire, starting with People = Shit, (sic), and they’re *still* playing Get This! Of course, there’s also *still* a good portion of the crowd that doesn’t – a lot of bewildered looks while the rest of us are screaming “SUCK THESE NUTS” at the top of our lungs haha. The new songs sounded great (Unsainted and Solway Firth), I’ve always loved The Heretic Anthem, Prothestics was cool to hear again, and the new All Out Life was a crowd pleaser as well. Can’t go out any harder than they did with an encore of Spit It Out (complete with Jumpdafuckup as always!) and the rightful grand finale of Surfacing. We had a blast, the band sounded awesome, Corey sounded great, can’t ask for more!

08/10/2019 Black Stone Cherry, Stolen Rhodes, BC Psychotics (Leroy, NY @ Jam at the Ridge)

A Southern-Fried Saturday Night with the @blackstonecherryofficial boys – a fun night at @jamattheridgeny !! #blackstonecherry #jamattheridge #concertpics #meetandgreet

A post shared by Eric Bonus (@woopops_music_stuff) on

I was pretty excited to see that Black Stone Cherry was on the schedule for Jam at the Ridge this year, as usually they book straight-up country acts. I’ve more or less driven past the place on the way to or from work for the last 8 years, but had never seen a show there. They bill it as a family-friendly environment, and due to the noise curfew the shows are usually over by 9:30-10:00 or so. With all of that in mind, I went all-in and got the VIP meet and greet package. I’d met the BSC guys before (read: 10 years ago), but I always like to support the band and the venue with these types of things as well. So as a non-camper I had to park on North Rd, and we got a ride on the “redneck limo” (a farm tractor with a trailer ala a halloween pumpkin patch!) to get down Conlon Rd. to the venue. It’s a cool place, at the bottom of an old ski run. Almost like having a stage set up in your backyard! I wandered around a bit, got something to eat, and then we did the meet and greet in the backstage area. The BSC guys were gracious as always and super nice. I did ask if there was going to be a Floyd Collins sighting, to which they chuckled (but ultimately didn’t play).

The openers were pretty decent as well. BC Psychotics are a local band that mix some originals in with their covers, and probably do well as a party / bar band (apparently they’re playing 34 Rush at Batavia Downs as well). The direct support was a southern/country rock band (from Philadelphia!) called Stolen Rhodes. Not nearly as heavy/rock as BSC, more in the Lynyrd Skynyrd type realm, so not exactly my wheelhouse, but I enjoyed them. Very talented guys.

At this point I thought the place would have filled in more, it was a beautiful Saturday night, but if there was 200 people there that’d be a lot. Even with the people actually camping there, I figured it’d be busier. No accounting for good taste I guess. I can say that everyone that was there was all-in for BSC though!

With that in mind, on to the main attraction! I’d never seen Black Stone Cherry headline, so I was doubly excited for this. They came out of the gate with Burnin’ followed by Me and Mary Jane, so we were starting with a bang. Judging from the other setlists they’d been playing in Europe lately, we got some stuff that hadn’t been played recently, including Maybe Someday, Bad Habit and Born Under A Bad Sign (which I *love* their take on!). They’ve been inserting all kinds of stuff into Cheaper to Drink Alone, and we got, of all things, No Diggity! I was standing next to a group of people that would have been more at home at Montage or the Bug Jar (like me, shout out to JT, Taylor, and Jeanie!) than here and while we all thought No Diggity was both awesome and hilarious, I’d wager a good half the crowd had no idea what song it was. Too funny. The balance of the show was old favorites (Boom Boom, Millionaire, Lonely Train) and they closed with Family Tree. BSC were just as good as they’ve been every other time, the small-ish crowd didn’t seem to faze them in the least as far as their intensity, and all of us that were there had a great time. We had ourselves a Southern-Fried *Saturday* Night!

Me and Mary Jane
In My Blood
Maybe Someday
Bad Habit
Tired Of The Rain
Born Under A Bad Sign
Cheaper To Drink Alone (No Diggity insert)

White Trash Millionaire
