07/20/2001 Boy Hits Car, Candiria, Crashpalace (Buffalo, NY @ Showplace Theater)

By Eric | July 20, 2001 11:59 pm

[Clutch was the headliner, but we were too tired and didn’t stay. Bummer.]

So we dashed across town from the Cold Edge Sessions at the Backstage Pub over to Showplace. No chicanery with this one, we actually had tickets! We (Mary much more so than I) became Boy Hits Car fans after seeing them open for Finger Eleven back in May, so we jumped at the chance to see them again. We got there just as Crashpalace was getting on, they’re from Austrialia, and kinda have a Bush-esque sound, they were decent, but the crowd was not really into them. Candiria was next, they’re a hardcore band from Brooklyn, and had quite a few fans there for them. The pit was wild, but thankfully contained, as none of the moshers hit us up in the front. The guys were talented, their drummer (Ken Schalk) was amazing, but the songs did absolutely nothing for me. Almost jazzy hardcore, I could appreciate the effort, but just couldn’t get into it. (2016 Eric is a little disappointed in 2001 Eric on this tip.)

bhc_07-20-01_07

Anyway, BHC was up next, and given we were a biased audience, what a set! Opening with an unlreleased song called Daregveda, and then into I’m A Cloud, which got the now-sizeable crowd into it immediately. The rest of the set was: As I Watch The Sun F**k The Ocean, Lovecore, Man Without Skin, Turning Inward, Rebirth, Going to India, and they closed with Benkei, with Cregg doing the stage dive again, however we were ready for him this time! There was an awesome crowd for BHC, and every song was great, which was helped immeasurably by the fact that we actually knew the songs this time. We met some people from the BHC board and stood behind them all night, and as it turns out through various (f11 mainly) other boards we were familiar with each other! The people were great, the band was great, the fans were great, the show was just awesome, and to top it off, shirts were only $10! We called it a night and didn’t stay for Clutch (2016 Eric is a LOT disappointed in 2001 Eric on this tip!). Partly because we were dead tired, and partly because Mary had another show the next day to rest up for. She went to Staind and Cold at the Flickenger Center downtown with a bunch of other people, while I stayed home for Amanda’s birthday / graduation party.

07/20/2001 Cold Edge Sessions (Buffalo, NY @ Backstage Pub)

By Eric | July 20, 2001 11:59 pm

This was one of 103.3’s Edge Sessions, where bands would come in and play acoustically in a hole-in-the-wall bar for 25 people or so, and it got recorded for later airing on the radio. You had to win tickets from the station to get in.

Usually.

Mary and I hauled down there anyway not having won a thing, and as we figured we would, we found Cold’s bus on the side of the bar. As we approached the bus, the side door of the bar opened up, and Sam, Jeremy and Kelly walked out! We got some autographs, and then told Jeremy that “this is one of those bullshit gotta call the radio station and win things, and we didn’t win, is there any way you can get us in?” Sam said he was gonna go talk to one of their road guys, that he didn’t think it was going to be a problem. He disappears behind the bus (while all the while, some other dude was bitching about where the bus was parked). So off the bus comes Scooter and Terry with one of their crew guys. I asked Scooter for an autograph, and he’s like “I’ll get ya later, you guys are coming in with us.” THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!! It’s one of those things where we went down there hoping it would happen, but not really believing it would happen, and then it happened!

So we walked in the side door to the place right with them, Scooter and Terry went up on stage, and we wound up with second row seats! It was just the two of them on stage, and the other three guys were out on the bus because as Scooter said, the rest of the band heckles them when they play! So Adam12 (the Edge DJ) gets up on stage and the show starts. They play Just Got Wicked right off the bat, then End Of The World. They talk some with Adam12, who asks impossibly awkward questions and makes a couple of assumptions about the band that got shut down (ha!), Scooter mentions how they pulled all the shades because they want it dark, “We’d melt in the light”. Then they play No One, and hit a “commercial break”.

cold_07-20-01_02

During the little intermission, Scooter kinda asked what everyone wanted to hear, so I yelled “STRIP HER DOWN!” Scooter’s eyes lit up, then he’s like “Nah, we can’t do that one, but we got one we’re gonna play instead”. So they come back from what would be the commercial, and after playing End of the World, they played Ugly!!! It seemed like there were maybe two other people besides us that even knew the song, but needless to say Mary and I were thrilled. Then they let the audience ask some lame questions, and to close it out, they played Bleed. The set was fantastic, Terry and Scooter sounded incredible, and despite what he said duing the interview, Scotter did not need the little echo box he used, his voice was spot on without it. Right after the set, we stood up to kinda get in line for autographs, and Terry came down from the stage and handed me his pick! I asked him about helping out on Staind’s MTV Unplugged set, and he said it was awesome, but that he was kinda nervous. (You couldn’t tell on the video!) We got autographs from the rest of the guys, got some pictures, profusely thanked Scooter and Terry for getting us in, and then booked across town to the Showplace Theatre to catch BoyHitsCar!

making the front page

By Eric | July 13, 2001 5:26 pm

Thursday night was the Toadies show at Showplace, what a show! Check out the review!

My sister is up for the weekend, we did the CD/Thrift store run today for her birthday, bought her some depeche mode CD’s.. woohoo!

I’m immortalized on the front page of the Tonawanda News for the Watchmen show last saturday… Im the dork in the white hat right by the kick drum… You can see Karl and Joe as well, part of Mike, but alas Mary is nowhere to be found…. 🙁 She wouldn’t have wanted to be in the picture anyway… hehehe!

07/12/2001 Toadies, Diffuser, Johnny Nobody (Buffalo, NY @ Showplace Theater)

By Eric | July 12, 2001 11:59 pm

We showed up in the middle of Johnny Nobody’s set, and I’m kinda dissappointed, because they were really good! The lead singer had quite a voice, and power to match. They had quite a few fans as well, cuz the crowd was holllering for them through the entire set. Then Diffuser came out and made JN look even better, because we thought they were awful. The lead singer’s dyed hair was something to behold as well. I have written in my original review simply that, “DIFFUSER GETS FAT CHICKS!”. Can’t remember how or why on that one.

Anyway, after an impatient delay, the Toadies came out, ripping into Motivational, then into Mr. Love, which got the crowd pretty fired up. It had been over 6 years since they’d been to Buffalo, however it seemed like there weren’t a whole lot of hardcore fans there. Some for sure, but not many. The rest of the setlist shaped up like: Push The Hand, Hell Below / Stars Above, Possum Kingdom, What We Have We Steal, Little Sin, Got A Heart, Away, Plane Crash, Paper Dress, I Come From The Water, Heel, Quitter, and then the Toadies made the evening way more interesting and fun. As lead singer Todd Lewis put it, “Now we were going to do the rock star encore thing and come back and play a song called Sweetness, but we’re not gonna do that bullshit!” Mark Reznicek, the drummer, at this point crumpled up his setlist and threw it! Everyone in the crowd was yelling for Tyler, so they acquiesced, but not before Todd threatened not to play it due to some guy in the audience calling him a motherfucker. “Nah, I’m just kidding, we’re gonna play it!” So we got Tyler, and then they started taking requests from the crowd! “What do you want to hear off the new record?” Someone yelled out “BACKSLIDER!!” “Backslider isn’t on the new record!!” There were people yelling for Dollskin, so that got played, then we got Backslider anyway, Jigsaw Girl, after which they finally played Sweetness, and finally a cover of the Pixies “Where is My Mind”. I subsequently got the setlist Mark threw on the ground! For 10 bucks, this was an awesome show!

As it turned out, this was either one of the last or *the* last show of the Hell Below / Stars Above tour, as bassist Lisa Umbarger quit two days later, and Todd Lewis broke up the band three days after that. Interscope Records had no plans to promote the album or the band, and in fact didn’t even support this tour.

07/07/2001 The Watchmen, Trouser (North Tonawanda, NY @ Gateway Park)

By Eric | July 7, 2001 11:59 pm

We actually got a good show in NT, and it was free! The politicos were all worried that the concert series at Gateway Park was going to attract “undesireables”. There was none of that, only good music. We met the Watchmen guys and got autographs as soon as we got there, as we approached the stage from behind. Trouser came all the way from Newfoundland to open, and they really didnt sound half bad. A straight ahead rock band, their guitar player was pretty good with his solos and such; they did a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody that got the crowd going. Then the Watchmen came out, opening with I’m Waiting and playing some new songs along the way, which had some samples, but sounded really cool! I wouldnt expect the Watchmen to use a drum machine, but new and different can be good! Mary got a setlist, and the songs were: I’m Waiting, Mister, no longer mine (new song), boneyard tree, soul stealer, holiday (new song), any day now, wiser, lusitantia, I like it (new song), ACC? (Never figured out what this was), incarnate, slomotion (new song), stereo. ENCORE: all uncovered, say something. There were a lot of Canadians that came down for it, singing the words and such. They got a new drummer as well. After the show we got more autographs, I stole a poster off the wall and got it signed. They guys were very gracious after the show about signing stuff and talking to us. A great show, and for free!! 🙂

07/02/2001 Friendship Festival: The Tea Party (Fort Erie, ONT @ Mather Arch Park)

By Eric | July 2, 2001 11:59 pm

All that driving… Everyone met at my house at 8pm, then we had to get Dave Z. back in Cheektowaga, so logically we’d take the Peace Bridge, right? Not with that traffic! It was actually worth our while to drive all the way back to the Falls and take the Rainbow Bridge over, then take Niagara Parkway back into Fort Erie. Totally backtracking, but it was worth it. We got there just as Joydrop was ending (Molotov Cocktail, Inc. and Static in Stereo also played), and Mary took off through the crowd like a bat out of hell! We ended up getting stuck behind these asshole Americans that were standing on coolers, totally blocking everyone’s view. So much for visuals.

The Tea came out and opened with Temptation again, with the mini The River insert, then Fire in the Head, Psychopomp, Save Me/Kashmir, Halcyon Days, The Bazaar, Walking Wounded, Lullaby, Requiem (another new song that rocked!), Heaven Coming Down, and again closed with Winter Solstice/Sister Awake/Paint it Black. The crowd up front was better than Edgefest, but considering 103.3 put this show on, there seemed to be a lot of idiot Americans that knew two songs and were just generally not into it. The show was awesome however, and judging from the new songs, “Interzone Mantras” should be a great album. (Spoiler: it certainly was!)

07/01/2001 Edgefest: Tool, The Tea Party, Big Wreck, Sevendust, Static in Stereo, Flybanger, Staggered Crossing, Bif Naked, Project Wyze (Barrie, ONT @ Molson Park)

By Eric | July 1, 2001 11:59 pm

By virtue of overlapping sets on multiple stages, also at Edgefest but I didn’t see: Finger Eleven, 3 Doors Down, Gob, Billy Talent, Mudmen (among others).

Rolled up to Barrie with Sara, Adrienne, Danielle, and Dave (plus some others in a separate car (per Sara) that I don’t recall!) for the annual Canada Day blowout. We got to Molson Park about 1:30, cased the place real quick, then went into the main stage area and set up shop by the left tower. Project Wyze was up first, and immediately made me wonder why Sevendust was on the second stage. Needless to say we were not impressed in the least. Bif Naked was up next, and while her set was pretty good, I remember her trying to tell us the day was a scorcher, when it was really like 65-70 degrees, windy, and cloudy all day… in short, the weather wasn’t as nice as it could have been.

At this point me and David headed over to the second stage, caught the end of Staggered Crossing, who were pretty good. Flybanger was on next, and while pretty heavy, they sound just like everyone else. But it beat the hell out of Project Wyze! We got back to the main stage, then I turned right around and got food with Sara, so we watched Static in Stereo (Todd Kerns’ new band after Age of Electric) while we were in line. They sounded pretty good, a straight up rock band. Sevendust was up next, and Dave and I were right in the pit for them… they played 6 songs, 2 new ones (I’m guessing Praise and Dead Set) plus Denial, Black, Bitch and Waffle. As I said at the time, “If the new songs are any indication, the new album is gonna kick ass!” Animosity did indeed end up kicking ass! Their set was way too short for my liking, we really felt they should have been on the main stage. Speaking of which, we came back to main for Big Wreck, who sounded very good, the stuff from their new The Pleasure and the Greed album sounding just as good as the stuff from “In Loving Memory Of…”. Big Wreck setlist: Inhale, Deep Blue Sea (John Lee Hooker cover), Look What I Found, That Song, Ladylike, Knee Deep, Breakthrough, Blown Wide Open, Undersold, Head in the Girl, The Oaf.

Now it was time for the first of the two real headliners – The Tea Party. They came out, and they didn’t disappoint! Roaring into Temptation, then Fire in the Head, a new song, Lullaby, which was anything but (it rocks!), and Psychopomp, they got the somewhat lethargic crowd going. Next was Walking Wounded, Release, another new one called Apathy, Save Me (into Led Zep’s Kashmir), Heaven Coming Down, and finally Sister Awake into Paint it Black, much to the delight of the crowd. A great set from a great band, and we got to see them the next night in Fort Erie as well.

Then it was time for the band EVERYONE came to see, TOOL. With an impressive stage setup, Maynard swayed in front of the video screen for most of the set. Opening with The Grudge, the crowd was whipped into a frenzy. Plowing right into Stinkfist, the energy continued as they took a brief pause before launching 46 & 2, Schism, Sober, Parabola and closing with Lateralus. The set seemed way too short, as everyone was mentioning that they wanted to hear almost every other song that wasn’t played! But they sounded incredible, and the stage show was a sight as well. After sitting in the parking lot for about an hour, we finally got out and slowly made our way home, didn’t get back to NT until 3:30am, which was lovely considering we had a show later that night!

The only picture I have from this show is of me and Adrienne for some reason…

06/28/2001 3 Doors Down, Seven Mary Three, Oleander (Rochester, NY @ High Falls)

By Eric | June 28, 2001 11:59 pm

We got there a little late and missed half of Oleander’s set. I’m assuming it was the same set from the Artvoice Festival the prior Sunday, we managed to catch Unwind, Benign, Why I’m Here, and Are You There.

Then Seven Mary Three came out, and put on a great show. They opened with First Time Believer, then went to the older stuff, playing Water’s Edge, Roderigo (which I yelled for, and Jason Ross was like, “You read my mind! Giti also commented on that as he was signing my stuff), Steal A Car, Lucky, Sleepwalking, My My, Peel, Breakdown, Wait, and closed with Cumbersome. They sounded really good, but seem to be the type of band that you have to see in a club. The crowd was rather lame for both opening bands, not sure if they were just unfamiliar or what. After the 7M3 set, we hung around by the buses and got autographs from the all of the 7M3 guys, and Mary managed to snag a 7M3 setlist which ended up being a little different from what they actually played. Then we wandered to the back of the concert area, and found Doug from Oleander so we got autographs from him and talked for a little bit. Not long after Ric and Scott from Oleander appeared as well, so we got to chat with them too. All the Oleander guys are really nice and down to earth!

We split and half-heartedly watched 3DD, they opened with Duck and Run, played everything off “The Better Life”, including Be Like That acoustically, and closed with Loser. They also did about 4 or 5 new/old songs, and some setlist.fm investigation would suggest we saw When I’m Gone, Dangerous Game, This Time, maybe Sarah Yellin, and one of either Dead Love or Wasted Me from the indie. They have this new 3EB-esque stainless steel stage setup with risers going up and behind the drummer, kinda overdoing it IMHO, but whatever. They sounded decent, but the show hasn’t really changed over the 4 times I’ve seen them.
