04/18/2018 Papa Roach, Nothing More, Escape The Fate (Rochester, NY @ Main Street Armory)
By Eric | April 19, 2018 3:32 pm
I had been looking forward to this one for a little bit, as I had missed a couple of opportunities to see Nothing More in the past few years, and I really like the new Papa Roach album as well. I hadn’t seen either band since early 2015 (PRoach with Godsmack, Nothing More (barely) with Periphery), so I was due. Escape The Fate was the first band on, and they were just as inoffensive and bland this time as they were when I saw them on Uproar in 2011. They weren’t bad, they weren’t good, they were just there.
I met up with Danielle, Dave, and Dave’s friend Kristina, and then Adam wasn’t too far behind them. We all nudged up a bit as Nothing More was about to come on, and then Adam, Danielle and I meandered up a little further. I was super excited to finally see them play a full set, and they didn’t disappoint. They played all of the hits off the new album, including Fade In / Fade Out which I love, the standards off the self-titled, and they’re still playing Salem! We also got a Skrillex cover with Johnny Hawkins playing the “scorpion”. They sounded great, the crowd response was really good, and again, I was just happy to see a full set!

We moved on back for the beginning of Papa Roach, and they too sounded great. I really liked the setlist this time out, probably because I really like the new album. Eight songs (our of 19) off of Crooked Teeth, including starting with the title track. Following that with To Be Loved, Face Everything and Rise, and Still Swingin’ made for a nice opening run. About two-thirds of the way through the set, Jacoby said he noticed a few little mosh pits here and there, but for the next song he wanted one big one. I had kinda been getting antsy anyway, so I looked at Adam and asked, “Should we come out of mosh retirement?”. We gave each other the “sure, why not?” look, and headed in! The band started up Traumatic, and away we went. Everybody up front was really cool, and I stayed up there for the rest of the set. Somehow during the ensuing chaos Danielle made it all the way to the barrier! It was fun being up there especially because we got a cover of Song 2, Between Angels and Insects, and then the encore was None of the Above followed by Last Resort (that song is old enough to vote!). They also stuck part of Linkin Park’s “In The End” into “Forever” which was nice. Overall, this old man had a great time up front – A+++ Would Mosh Again!

03/02/2018 Anthrax, Killswitch Engage, Havok (Rochester, NY @ Dome Arena)
By Eric | March 3, 2018 10:15 am
This was a fun bill – It had been a long six years since I’d see Killswitch (the AOJB anniversary tour when Jesse had just rejoined), and I’d never seen Anthrax. The closest I’d come was seeing Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano (who was in Anthrax at the time) with The Damned Things. I’d seen Havok a couple months earlier at the German House with Crowbar and Overkill; they got a little bit longer set this time out and were just as good. Straight ahead metal. I’m still not super familiar with many of the songs, but the set was enjoyable. I was hanging in the back with Scott, and then my concert buddy Derek joined us also.

I wandered down right into the thick of things for KsE, and I was excited – I hadn’t seen anything off of either of the two new albums with Jesse, so hearing those songs was really cool. They mixed up the setlist pretty well among the new and the old, with (to me, anyway) one interesting curveball – “Reckoning” off of the 2009 self-titled. They’re still playing “This Fire”, which I absolutely love, and they’re still closing with “Holy Diver”. For this tour they had Joey Belladonna come out to sing it with them, which was fantastic because he can hit those Dio notes! It was a great capper to a great set. Band sounded great, Jesse sounded good, the crowd was good, the mosh pit wasn’t too crazy – fun times.

Much like with Megadeth, I’d never seen Anthrax, but as part of the Big 4 I knew I had to. Having them play practically in my backyard was even better. I know most of the classic songs, and I’d spun the latest two albums a couple times as well, so I was familiar enough. Plus, for whatever reason, back in high school I had acquired a copy of State of Euphoria (I still have no idea how), so the fact that they played Be All, End All and Antisocial was nice for me! I retreated to the back for their set to just enjoy it, and they didn’t disappoint. They sounded fantastic, and I don’t think Joey Belladonna is human with some of the notes he hits. He’s incredible. I don’t know how the Anthrax lifers view it these days, but I thought they were dynamite for a band coming up on 40 years together!

02/24/2018 Darkest Hour, Whores (Rochester, NY @ Photo City Improv)
By Eric | February 25, 2018 9:47 am
I went to this one on a whim. I’d heard about Darkest Hour for years, mainly due to the fact that they did a Washington Capitals fight song a couple years ago, but also because they’re metal lifers and from all accounts were really good live. That proved to be true. I couldn’t tell you anything they played, but the handful of people that were there (Photo City is not a big place at all) definitely knew their stuff and raged pretty hard.
Setlist from the night before, so it’s gotta be close:
Knife in the Safe Room
Convalescence
Doomsayer (The Beginning of the End)
This Is the Truth
Timeless Numbers
An Epitaph
Savor the Kill
Violent by Nature
Those Who Survived
Enter Oblivion
Nazi Punks Fuck Off (Dead Kennedys Cover)
With a Thousand Words to Say but One
Encore:
For the Soul of the Savior
Rapture in Exile
The Sadist Nation
As the opener, Whores was pretty decent also. They’re a relatively new band, but I’ll be damned if they didn’t sound like Helmet to me. Not too shabby.

02/11/2018 Stone Sour, Halestorm (Rochester, NY @ Main Street Armory)
By Eric | February 13, 2018 10:11 am
[The Dead Deads were first band on, didn’t get there in time.]
Halestorm had been booked to play the Armory back in October, and I was on the fence as to whether I’d go or not. I ended up deciding not to, and then Lzzy got sick and they cancelled the show. They promised to make up the date, and they certainly did make it up to us, bringing their co-headlining run with Stone Sour. I didn’t “hesitate” to grab a ticket this time around! It had been quite awhile since I’d seen either of these bands, and funny enough, they were on the same bill last time too – Uproar at Darien Lake in August of 2010 In the ensuing 7+ years, Halestorm had released two more albums and handful of covers EP’s, and Stone Sour had put out three more albums. Needless to say I was due to see both. Late in the game I found out that Scott and Tracy would be attending as well, so having close company all night was great too!
Halestorm was on first, opening with a new song, “Black Vultures”, off their impending new album before cranking into the favorites. For being the last night of this run, Lzzy sounded great, nailing all of the high stuff, and the band was equal to the task. Not that they weren’t seasoned performers by the time I got to see them, but they are a tight operation these days – all killer no filler for sure. To my ears, the set selection was great, playing everything I would have wanted to hear, including Love Bites, It’s Not You, I Get Off, I Miss The Misery, etc. They had been playing their version of Whitesnake’s “Still Of The Night”, but we didn’t get it on this night. No matter, their own stuff is more than enough to sustain a set. Good stuff all the way around.

One set change later, Stone Sour closed the show. It’s still funny/surreal/interesting to see Corey Taylor be the full-on rock star guy fronting Stone Sour as opposed to the masked madman in Slipknot. He’s great at it to be sure, and as a small example of this gave the city a nod by wearing a House of Guitars shirt during the set. They started out with a two-song run (three if you include the YSIF tape intro) from the new Hydrograd album before continuing on a yo-yo type set of one heavy, one lighter, one heavy, one lighter. Made of Scars into Say You’ll Haunt Me, then 30/30-150 into Hesitate. The set was absolutely tailored to the Halestorm crowd, as they played all the lighter radio hits, and not a thing from the first self-titled album. There was enough other heavy stuff to keep it interesting (Do Me A Favor, Absolute Zero), and I enjoyed hearing Tired, but I could have used more heavy. Regardless, the band sounded fine, Corey sounded good, and I had a great time through both sets. Song selection aside, I had no real complaints about either set – just the usual Armory complaints about lack of parking, and the impossibly long line to get in every time. That never changes.
