08/23/1998 Summersault: Our Lady Peace, Garbage, I Mother Earth, Crystal Method, Fuel, Esthero, Hayden, Eve6, Harvey Danger, BTK (Barrie, ONT @ Molson Park)

Back to Molson Park for the second time in two months. Trucked up with Katie (and Nicki? Can’t remember…) Everyone sort of remembers this as the show the day AFTER Pearl Jam played there. How they got the place turned around in one day I have no idea. I do know we hardly left the side stages. I remember watching some of BTK, Esthero (I’d her her/them a week later at Buffalo’s Edgefest as well), Eve6 was pretty good (and Raine came out to introduce them), I don’t remember anything about Harvey Danger, had to suffer through Hayden (blech) to see Fuel for the first time (of many to come), and Fuel rocked! We happened to meet Jeremy Taggart from OLP walking around during the course of the afternoon, and got a couple of pics and autographs. As far as main stage, we saw most of Garbage’s set. After Garbage was I Mother Earth, and if I recall correctly, this was IME’s first show with Brian Byrne, and while the vast majority of the set was spot on, he forgot some of the words to One More Astronaut! The crowd bailed him out, thankfully. We wormed our way up to the front by the time OLP came out. Unfortunately, they played an abbreviated set due to some technical issues, and the impending thunderstorm, but even in their short time OLP opened with a new song called “Yourself” (apparently only 1 of 2 times it ever got played live), and I got to hear Julia as well. The last act of the night was the Crystal Method, and during their set the rain started to come down HARD. Needless to say we were all a bunch of drowned rats trudging back to our cars. Not exactly the storybook ending to an otherwise fun show.
A live clip of Yourself, which allegedly was only ever played twice, so it’s a 50-50 shot that it was from this show:

07/28/1998 Warped Tour: Deftones, Snapcase, NOFX, Rancid, Bad Religion, Reverend Horton Heat, Ozolmati, Mad Caddies, Kid Rock, Bif Naked, The Specials, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, CIV, Unwritten Law, All, Swingin’ Utters, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Dropkick Murphys, The Smooths, Aquabats, 98 Mute (Buffalo, NY @ LaSalle Park)

Entire bill: Bif Naked, the Specials, the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, CIV, Unwritten Law, All, Swingin’ Utters, Voodoo Glow Skulls, DropKick Murphys, The Smooths, Aquabats, 98 Mute
I primarily went to see the Deftones, but ended up seeing a ton of quality bands, whether I knew what I was watching at that point or not. I started out by wandering over to the smaller trailer stage to catch Kid Rock: watched two songs, promptly labeled him a Limp Bizkit ripoff, and walked away… doh! Little did I know, right? I’d occasionally peek at the main stage, but for most of the day I was planted at the two side stages. When the alternating stages start with Snapcase, then follow with NOFX, Bad Religion, Rancid, the Reverend Horton Heat, and the Deftones, there’s not much reason to move. In fact, the only time I did move was after the Deftones set, when me and practically everyone else moved to the side of the state where Chino was signing stuff, and sure enough I got an autograph on (of all things) my school planner!

Found the Deftones setlist: Lotion, My Own Summer, Root, 7 Words, Around The Fur, Be Quiet And Drive, Headup
Beyond those bands, I know for sure I watched part of Ozolmati, the Mad Caddies, CIV, the Aquabats, Cherry Poppin Daddies, and Dropkick, but have zero real recollection of any of those sets unfortunately.
Finally, the freebies given away at the various tents at this show proved to have some formative musical qualities, as I got a copy of the Sampler CD for the tour, which led to my first exposure to Cold (in recorded form), 2 Skinnee J’s, and Rammstein. The other sampler was from Victory Records, with 2 songs apiece from Snapcase’s “Progression Through Unlearning”, Hatebreed’s “Satisfaction is the Death of Desire”, and Thumb’s “Exposure”, all of which I ended up eventually buying.
This clip of “Be Quiet And Drive” is a compilation from the 1998 Warped Tour. Whether any of the Buffalo show is in here or not I have no idea, but I figured it was relevant anyway.
Thanks to this site (Laurie’s Shows), Bad Religion’s setlist: Recipe For Hate/Change Of Ideas/Do What You Want/Punk Rock Song/I Want to Conquer the World/21st Century (Digital Boy)/Hear It/Part III/A Walk/Generator/American Jesus/Infected/Fuck Armageddon… This is Hell

07/11/1998 Third Eye Blind, Our Lady Peace, Eve6 (Darien, NY @ Darien Lake Performing Arts Center)

I wrote this whole show up for the Clumsy Congress right after it happened, back in 1998, so this has an even more fanboy-ish vibe than usual. I’ve cleaned it up a bit (it was one big chunk of text, with almost no punctuation save for exclamation points everywhere), but other than that, straight from the horse’s mouth 14 years ago… Enjoy!
Katie and I get to the park about 12:30, and wait around by the front gate for about 10-15 minutes, and then we see Devon, Niki, Beth, and Devon’s brother Ethan walking towards us [all folks from the Clumsy Congress]. We got park passes for the day as well, so we do the whole rides thing, then get the bright idea to go over to the amphitheater to see if soundcheck and whatnot is going on. We all started over to the amphitheater section (having to leave the amusement park) and walking along the fence, seeing if there was any way we could see the special “meeting” session the local radio station had with OLP. While we were looking in the fence’s direction, Duncan walked right past us! We did the usual, “is that him? no, YEAH!” and then followed the small crowd of radio winners to try and get in anyway, to no avail. So we rip down a banner that the radio station put up, make a sign saying “clumsy congressors over the fence!!!” and chucked it over. Also to no avail. Getting the bright idea that since we’re gonna be so close [we had something like 2nd row seats], we take down more radio banners and make two signs: one saying “The Clumsy Congress loves OLP” which we all signed (and put an (emtee) on there too!) [emtee was guitarist Mike Turner’s handle on the CC], and the other saying “Clumsy Congress Right Here!” with arrows pointing to us. We figured we were going to hold them up. We circle back to the park and Devon gets the idea to get a beach ball or something to sign and throw up on the stage, when her brother finds an inflatable guitar instead! Devon buys it, we all sign it (again, with all our screen names on it too!) and on the neck we wrote, again, “The Clumsy Congress loves you!” We figure since we’re so close, this will ultimately get chucked up on stage.
Fast-forward to the opening band, Eve6… decent, but that’s not why I’m writing! [They were actually pretty good, but we were ridiculously impatient for OLP]
Now the fun begins; we park ourselves right by the barrier, and then we get the bright idea to tape the banners to the barrier! (Mike could definately see them where we were…) So that done, (oh yeah, we were all displaying the CC on our hands too!) OLP comes out, Devon and Niki waved to Mike beforehand, so when he comes out, he looks at the banners, saw the (emtee) on it, and since we’re all displaying our CC’s, Mike smiles and waves to Devon and Niki, and then a little further down, me and Katie! We got a thumbs up and everything! Then Niki with her perfect aim, gets the blow-up guitar on the stage, RIGHT by mike! he looks down at it (miraclously with our writing face UP!) and once again acknowledges us! Then the roadie puts it in Mike’s guitar stand! Later on, Mike actually picked it up and pretended to play it! (score one for the CC!) So we got seen by Mike, I know I got eye contact from Duncan and Jeremy too… and even Raine for a split second! During Starseed, Raine jumps off the stage, comes right up to the barrier and starts slapping hands, first of which was mine! At this point Katie (who also got her hand touched!) snaps a picture like 2 inches from Raine’s face! Mike also “posed” for pictures for Katie and Niki. He was hamming it up!
OLP setlist:

Let You Down

Eternal Life (Jeff Buckley cover)
We watched 3eb (yawn)… not impressed personally. [Ultimately, the band was fine, but Stephen Jenkins voice did leave something to be desired in a live setting. I’ve come to love that first 3EB album, but I found a video bootleg from some other show on this tour, and his voice really was as bad as I remember it being,
The set we saw was probably very similar to this one from a week later:
Thanks a Lot
Narcolepsy
Motorcycle Drive By
Good for You
Horror Show
Jumper
The Background
I Want You
Burning Man
Tattoo of the Sun
Gorgeous
How’s It Going to Be
Baba O’Riley [The Who]
Losing a Whole Year
London
Semi-Charmed Life

I Will Follow [U2]
God of Wine
]
We left after saying goodbye to Devon, Ethan, Beth and Niki. Me and Katie hung around to try and catch a glimpse of OLP’s tour bus, we wait in the car for 5 minutes, and out comes the bus! We follow it, hoping it stops at the rest stop [foolish yes, but wouldn’t that have been awesome], but it doesn’t. We follow it onto the Thruway, but sadly it goes east to the next gig in Syracuse, we had to go west to get back home! Ah well… needless to say, we had a blast.

07/01/1998 Edgefest 98: The Tea Party, Moist, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Econoline Crush, The Watchmen, Creed, Matthew Good Band (Barrie, ONT @ Molson Park)
By Eric | July 1, 1998 11:59 pm
[Bands that apparently were there that I didn’t see / don’t remember: Tripping Daisy, Sloan, Rusty, Bif Naked, Killjoys, The Inbreds, Sandbox]
My first experience at the legendary Molson Park, and I went by myself! This was as I was really getting into a lot of the then-current Canadian rock, and here was most of those bands all in one place! I remember getting there and wandering around for a bit and getting the lay of the land, before catching Econoline Crush on the main stage. Lead singer Trevor Hurst had dyed his hair bright red and was wearing a Canadian Olympic hockey team jersey, so needless to say he stood out. No idea on a setlist, but I do recall them sounding pretty good.
It was off to the second stage for a couple bands in a row, namely The Watchmen (whom I wasn’t really into yet, but knew I should probably see them), Matthew Good Band, who I’d recently gotten into thanks to Canadian radio (Everything is Automatic and Indestructible were on constantly), and Creed again (Ode, In America, Unforgiven, Illusion, My Own Prison, What’s This Life For).
Watchmen: Say Something, Wiser, Lusitana, Any Day Now, All Uncovered, Incarnate, Run & Hide, Boneyard Tree, Stereo
Back over to the main stage to see Green Day, and boy howdy were they entertaining. They let a kid up on stage, showed him 3 chords, and let him play on one of the songs! Tre destroyed his drum kit at the end of the set. According to setlist.fm their set was: Nice Guys Finish Last, Hitchin’ a Ride, Geek Stink Breath, Welcome to Paradise, Longview, Brain Stew, Jaded, Knowledge (Operation Ivy cover), Basket Case, King for a Day, When I Come Around, Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).
Seeing the Foo Fighters was a treat as well, although I can’t claim to remember much about their set. Setlist.fm says they played: Monkey Wrench, Alone + Easy Target, See You, My Poor Brain, Up in Arms, Enough Space, Big Me, I’ll Stick Around, Weenie Beenie, Hey, Johnny Park!, Everlong, New Way Home, This Is a Call.
Now Moist I paid a bit more attention to, and my main highlight/takeaway from their set was that they did Tangerine, then segued into Jesus Was My Girl from David Usher’s solo album. They were amazing. (Moist setlist: Push, Shotgun, Resurrection, Leave It Alone, Break Her Down, Gasoline, Silver, Ophelia, Tangerine / Jesus Was My Girl)
The Tea Party brought Edwin (who had recently departed I Mother Earth) out to cover Bowie/Reznor’s I’m Afraid Of Americans, which was unreal. I’m pretty sure the Tea also did Jeff Buckley’s “Last Goodbye” as an interlude in “Save Me”. Apparently they had also played earlier in the day in Ottawa and flew in. Surprisingly, no one near me in the crowd was singing, so I moved up closer to the front of the main stage, and ending up chatting with someone from Niagara Falls who had also made the trip.
It was definitely a long day, and felt like a longer drive home, but was certainly worth it to see that collection of bands in one place!

06/25/1998 Limp Bizkit, Incubus, Cold, Staind (Buffalo, NY @ Funhouse)
By Eric | June 25, 1998 11:59 pm
This was one hell of a show, and still ranks as one of my favorites, kind of a who’s who of late 90’s alt/nu/radio metal! This show was on the small stage at this venue, no less! I actually met Fred Durst for a brief moment, as he was just sitting at the bar with no one else around. I got his autograph on my ticket stub, and figured meeting bands was always going to be this easy! I also thought I’d hit the lottery getting to the barrier right at the beginning, which held out for the first three bands through the incredible heat. The place was a sauna all night long, and only got worse the later it got.
Staind was first band on, and I had no idea who they were at the time. Obviously hindsight is 20-20, and I really wish I could have known the Tormented stuff at the time, as Staind would go on to be one of my favorite bands for quite a stretch. I recall enjoying their set, and distinctly remember Fred coming out and doing Bring The Noise with them, which I ashamedly admit I didn’t know at the time either. Plenty of people did, however, and they went berserk for it.
Cold was next, and was another band I didn’t know anything about. The slower, sludgy music combined with Scooter’s voice threw me off at first, and I remember enjoying Staind more than them. (Obviously that first Cold album grew on me, and they became another favorite band of mine!) Judging from everything I’ve ever found, the setlist was probably something like Goodbye Cruel World, Give, Everyone Dies, Strip Her Down, and Go Away. When I finally met the guys in Cold much later (Kitchener in January 2001), I mentioned that the first time I’d seen them was this show, and Jeremy exclaimed “HOLY SHIT I remember that show! We kept begging them to bring us water instead of beer! I mean, we’re from Florida, but that was insane!”
Incubus was next, and I didn’t know them either (sensing a pattern here?), save for hearing A Certain Shade of Green. By this time the place was really like an oven, it was hot outside, even worse inside, people getting carried out left and right. They sounded pretty good though. Don’t really remember much about their set, but some internet sleuthing says the setlist was: DJ Kilmore, Magic Medicine/A Certain Shade Of Green, Hilikus, Vitamin, Idiot Box, Redefine, Glass, Calgone, You Will Be A Hot Dancer, New Skin.
*Aside*
Bizkit had their first-ever sold out show at Water Street back in December of 1997, and then played the Main Street Armory in February of 1998, which for awhile was the only bootleg you’d find for them (same day as OLP @ Water Street in fact). They had a massive WNY following, so to play this closet of a place was apparently something. Mind you, they were still kinda unknown in the mainstream, Faith hadn’t blown up yet!
*End Aside*
So yeah, that barrier spot! I held on to it for all of the first three bands, with an absolute crush of people behind me. And then Limp Bizkit came out. Well HO-LEE SHIT. They opened with Pollution, then right into Leech, and the place ERUPTED. I’m hanging on to the barrier for dear life, while Fred was looking right at me as we screamed the lyrics to Pollution. Then little old me, I couldnt take the heat anymore. I moved back off the barrier for the rest of the show, and enjoyed every minute of it! Fred got up onto the bar to sing Nobody Loves Me, they did their requisite covers medley of Korn and RATM, then busted into Jump Around! They closed with Faith and got all the chicks up on stage, not that there was any sort of room. This is definately one show, knowing what I know now, that I want a time machine for to go back to again!

This show never got added to my list because I could never remember exactly when and where it took place, and I didn’t keep my ticket stub. But I was indeed there with a high school buddy of mine, Dane. But thanks to this other dude’s concert list, I have some info! There definitely were at least two openers, I remember the place being super-small (like Club side of Water Street / Montage small), and I remember we stuck around long enough to hear My Old Self before we took off for whatever reason. Can’t remember why we left! I remember them sounding quite good though. The guy linked above also had a setlist!

05/07/1998 Our Lady Peace, Black Lab (Buffalo, NY @ Sheas Performing Arts Center)
By Eric | May 7, 1998 11:59 pm
So unlike the Water Street show in February, this time we indeed got Black Lab as openers. Other than the radio singles of Wash It Away and Time Ago, I didn’t really know much of Black Lab’s material at the time, and I wish I would have, because Your Body Above Me is a great album. They certainly held my attention. Since this was the last night of the tour, OLP did all kinds of disgusting stuff to BL’s gear while they were playing, such as Vaseline on the instruments, powder on the drums, etc. A comical end to a good set.
Katie and I managed 8th row tickets for this one, and we met up with a couple other Clumsy Congress members for the first time (Niki and Devon). As this was the 3rd time I’d seen OLP in the span of less than a year (all on the Clumsy tour), between the prior two shows and reading the Clumsy Congress, we kinda knew what we were in for. The setlist didn’t change too much from the Water Street Show, as they just added Hello Oskar. Along with a good number of other people, we got up to the edge of the stage during the encore, which was super-memorable for being the first of a couple times I saw OLP cover Jeff Buckley’s “Eternal Life”. I recall being one of a scant few who knew the song (Thanks Christine!), which led to lots of people looking around, going “How the hell does he know the words??”. One of the more fondly-remembered OLP shows for sure out of the bunch, and another that I happened across a recording of!

04/24/1998 HUM, Frontier (Buffalo, NY @ Showplace Theater)
By Eric | April 24, 1998 11:59 pm
I really can’t remember much about this show, other than I was there. I’m not not the biggest Hum fan anyone’s ever seen, but I do remember having fun at this show, much more so than Fastball the week before.
Due to the wonders of the internet, I found Hum’s setlist:
If You Are to Bloom
The Scientists
Scraper
Afternoon With the Axolotls (new intro)
Suicide Machine
Dreamboat
The Pod
Comin’ Home
I Hate it Too
Stars
Iron Clad Lou

By Eric | April 17, 1998 11:59 pm
Other than the fact that I have the ticket stub, and went with Katie, I don’t remember much from this show at all. I have no clue who opened. I didn’t think Fastball was all that impressive, I recall being rather bored. Considering I only knew “The Way” and that was it, this isn’t terribly surprising. As any band is wont to do, they played it last.

04/11/1998 Creed, SamIAm, Cool For August (Buffalo, NY @ The Funhouse)
By Eric | April 11, 1998 11:59 pm
Another place I’d come to see a bunch of shows at, either as The Funhouse on the small stage, or the attached bigger room that they called The Sideshow. This was on the small stage! I now had the Cool For August CD, after seeing them with OLP the year before, so I was pretty much the only one that knew their stuff. They definitely noticed however, as at one point I called out for them to play “Hey You”, and it happened to be next on the list! I think the band kinda got a kick out of that one.
SamIAm felt out of place on this bill, as they were pretty much a punk band, and it just didn’t fit. Don’t remember a whole lot about them otherwise.
As for Creed, this was right as the meteoric rise was starting (My Own Prison was a huge single by now), and they were still playing tiny places. They played most of the tracks off of My Own Prison, and from checking out other setlists around that era, it seems like we probably got to see early versions of some combination of Say I, Young Grow Old, Wrong Way and Bound and Tied. They sounded pretty damn good, and looking at some bootlegs on YouTube from around the same time confirms my hazy memories. Really glad I got to see them at this place, as after this tour they’d never play venues this small again!
